LASIK: How LASIK Eye Surgery Works?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology, Diploma in Ophthalmology , Fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment

LASIK: How LASIK Eye Surgery Works?

LASIK or laser in situ keratomileusis, is a form of corrective surgery that help patients who are suffering from near sightedness (Myopia), far sightedness (Hypermetropia) and even astigmatism (cylindrical power in glasses). This procedure aims at correcting the shape of the cornea, which is the transparent layer that lines the front of the eye. Through this procedure, the cornea is reshaped so that the retina receives a focused light.

So what are the health tips for people going through a LASIK procedure? Here is our take:

Advantages:

Biggest advantage of LASIK is that it helps people to get rid of Glasses and contact lenses, which sometimes are cosmetically unacceptable and in some cases are visually disabling.

Best part of LASIK is that it is:

  • Quick (total duration of surgery is hardly 5 minutes) and virtually painless.
  • Has a high success rate ( success rate is 96%).
  • Does not require bandages or stitches.
  • Adjustments can be made years later to alter the vision as per growing impairment in the future and advancing years.

Risks/Side Effects:

Minor side effects like dryness, glare and halos, if appear, subside with time.

Eligibility Criteria:

Any person 18 yrs or older who fulfils the following criteria can undergo Lasik surgery

1. Stable refraction
2. Corneal thickness and topography should be in normal range
3. Dilated retinal examination should be normal
4. Adequately wet eyes

Note: One should abstain from wearing contact lens at least 2 weeks before the procedure.

Precaution after the Procedure:

Patient is likely to have some inflammation after the procedure and temporary dryness.

Use medicines as prescribed by the doctor

1. Avoid any type of eye makeup for at least 1 month after surgery
2. Avoid swimming or water sports for at least 2- 3 weeks after surgery

Going through a LASIK procedure is a matter of finding the right specialist and ensuring that you take all the precautions before the procedure. Also, it is important to look into your medical history and eyes in particular so as to avoid complications

Hi, Please suggest me Is strabismus (squint) surgery possible for Adults of age 30.

Hi, Please suggest me Is strabismus (squint) surgery possible for Adults of age 30.
Hi lybrate-user, Strabismus surgery is possible at any age. And at the of 30 as you are inquirying ,should not be a problem and very much possible. At this age of 30 yrs, looks like we are dealing with cosmetic indication; and is very commonly done at this age. And just for awareness let me go further ,we perform squint surgery at any age; age is not the factor as far as fitness for surgery is obtained and of course if any illness or limiting factor is present which might interfere with surgery ;it is corrected before surgery so that the post operative period can be of no problems. As far as indication for surgery is correct and pre operative fitness is achieved .age is not the factor; surgery can very well be done. As pediatric ophthalmologist and squint expert we are trained to operate on even early days after birth to very elderly patients provided the indication for surgery is correct. Hope this clears your doubt regarding age factor for strabismus surgery.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. First and foremost is to keep her blood glucose in strict control (fasting < 100 mg, PP 150 to 170 mg & HbA1c% <7). +Choice of lenses depends on one's affordability. All are good. Multifocal does not offer any grade advantage. Thanks.

I use eyeglasses with power minus 0.5 in both eyes. Recently I had started pouring cow ghee drops in my eyes and I found results to be positive as I could see more clearly. I want to know whether I stop using spectacles as after wearing them again my vision gets blurred. Also I would like to know harmful effects, if any, of using cow ghee.

The treatment you are following is called as tarpana karma in ayurvedic panchakarma treatments. This treatment is very useful in treatment of Astigmatism, Myopia etc. Visual disturbances. Yes you can get you eyes checked at optimetrist and if eye sight less than 0.25 stop using spectacles. There are no side effects with the use of cow ghee, but the use and procedure you follow matters.

Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As"per your clinical history is concerned you are using right medication and use it as usual. Treatment should be aimed at exact pathological disorders responsible for it like certain diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, syphilis, herpes zoster, and tuberculosis have been associated with episcleritis.so try to rule out it if possible.Once the cause is identified it will be cleared. Hope that helps

Hi lybrate-user. The lenses are different types from 3000 to 25000 There are various company lenses are available. Like Abott is good. The surgery requires hardly 20-30 mins maximum. And there are some prior test required to do before surgery. Like blood test. Which you will be advised once you consult a doctor. You may visit Center for Sight if you have a branch there. They have excellent facilities.

Hi lybrate-user. First of all confirm that is it fungus. Or not. Because if it is fungus then it is a very serious infection and you may loose your eyes. Second the symptoms you are telling are very non specific. And cannot be diagnosed. So better consult an eye specialist immediately to confirm the diagnosis. Then you can consult me through Lybrate for homoeopathic treatment. Till then you may use homoeopathic eyedrops. Euphrasia three times a day.
