5 Dangerous Things to Avoid When You're Pregnant

For an expecting mother, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of her unborn child. With due care, a mom-to-be can prevent complications that may arise in pregnancy by avoiding certain potential risks. Read on to find out the 5 things pregnant women must avoid at all costs in order to have a safe pregnancy.

  1. Abdominal x-rays: Abdominal x-rays during pregnancy are a big no. This kind of x-ray exposes the abdomen of the mother, and the baby as a consequence, to high levels of radiation, which can cause changes in the baby's rapidly growing cells. As a result, the baby's chances of suffering from birth defects or certain cancers, such as leukaemia later on in life, increase rapidly. It is best to avoid x-rays until absolutely necessary. X-rays of area other than abdomen if considered essential by your doctor can be performed after wearing an abdominal lead shield.
  2. Alcohol: All types of alcohol must be avoided during pregnancy. Consumption of alcohol during these 9 months has been associated with several birth defects such as poor growth, learning disabilities and mental retardation. In worst case scenarios, excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy can lead to what is known as foetal alcohol syndrome or fas, which severely affects the mental development and physical growth of the unborn child, particularly of the face and skull. Also, you must quit smoking.
  3. Illicit or recreational drugs: Drugs like marijuana, cocaine and other recreational drugs are again absolutely forbidden in pregnancy. These result in birth defects in the unborn child, poor growth and even withdrawal symptoms in the newborn after birth.
  4. Medicines: As the metabolism of a growing baby is very different from that of an adult, it is very important to be sure of the medicines that you take while pregnant. This is especially true in the first trimester or the first 3 months of pregnancy when the foetus is most vulnerable. Certain medicines are deemed safe for the baby, while some are potentially harmful. Hence one must make sure to consult your doctor before taking any medicine when pregnant.
  5. Stress: Stress can trigger various health problems, which can be bad for both the baby and the mother. Studies have revealed the emotional environment of the mother is experienced by the baby as well. In fact, a particular study has shown that any kind of stress, whether it be work related or stress caused by strain in relationships, can affect the mental development of the child. This as result can lead to the child developing certain behavioural disorders such as fears and phobias, which remain way into his adulthood.

I am feeling mysterious diffuse pain and discomfort in mine left breast. Nothing positive on investigations and test. All of a sudden this diffuse pain and discomfort troubles me alot. Few say. At the age of 45 setting of breast may be the cause. Or perimenopause symptoms. But really. The pain and discomfort I feel and face. Is unbearable. At that time it seems. As if I am not even able to breath properly. What can be the reason. How to get rid of this trouble or got it treated.

Reasons for such a pain can be many, from gastritis to angina or heart problems, lump in the breast etc. Please get yourself checked up to find out the exact cause. Heart check up is important. Also, get a mammography done, which is a special x ray of breast. It is advised for all women after 45 years of age to detect any signs of breast cancer early.

Hi, My wife's last cycle start date was on 27th march 2016, cycle length of approx 35 days, tested on 3rd april, 4th april and 5th april - all positive but HPT line was a little faint. Consulted doc (gyn) on 5th april evening. He saw all the HPT kit results and said the line is a bit faint and prescribed hcg injection 5000iu every week, duphaston, vitagreat, optogest, maintane, ondem (on SOS basis). My question is since we tested on the 2nd day of missed period did we test too early explaining these faint lines? We asked about the injection and the doc said it is to prevent the pregnancy and asked us to visit next week with HPT (fmu) and if it is again faint he will do a sonography. Would also like your opinion about the medicines prescribed. Thanks.

Faint line on upt only indicates low hormone levels. The commonest reason for this is a very early pregnancy. Other reasons could be failing or failed pregnancy or pregnancy in abnormal location or an ectopic. Do beta hcg test. 2 tests to be done at a gap of 48 hours. If the second value is almost double of the first value or more than double, then you do not need to worry, your pregnancy is fine.

A couple who is otherwise not having any problem, is usually advised to try to conceive for at least 1 year before check ups for infertility are done. In your case, few invest have been done which are normal. Kindly get your husband's semen analysis done. If that is normal, your menses are regular and without any problems, your age is less than 30, then you can try for a year easily, before any further tests are done to find the cause of infertility.

This is normal. The liquid part of semen comes but but the sperms can still swim up in the female genital tract to reach the egg.

I am assuming you are talking about beta thalassemia, which is the common one in this area. If you have beta thalassemia minor and your husband does not, then there is no chance that the baby can have the major form of thalassemia which is a disease of extreme concern and requires multiple blood transfusions throughout life. The baby would either have a normal pattern or at most get thalassemia minor, in which hb stays on the lower side, but the person is otherwise healthy, like in your condition.

Swelling of feet is a normal phenomenon in pregnancy, provided your bp is normal. If your bp is normal, do not worry about it. Avoid prolonged standing. Put your feet on a footrest while sitting. Decrease intake of salt and wear comfortable footwear.

Sex in pregnancy is generally safe if the couple keeps a few things in mind.

1. Sex in the first trimester or first 3 months is usually avoided, as it is an important time of pregnancy.

2. From 4th month onwards, sex is generally safe.

3. The frequency, position etc. depends upon the patient's comfort levels. There are no fixed rules.

4. In the last month, sex is thought to increase chances of spontaneously going into labor.

5. Physical intimacy must definitely be avoided in certain situations, bleeding or pain during pregnancy, an increased risk of premature labor pains, rupture of membranes and leaking, previous bad obstetric history etc. In the case of doubt, consult with your doctor.

Diabetes in the mother does not get transmitted directly to the baby. However, being the child of a diabetic parent, your child will have a higher chance of developing diabetes later in life. In pregnancy, however, one needs to control the sugars very strictly, otherwise the baby can have many problems including congenital anomalies, hypoglycemia, metabolic problems and growth problems etc.

Pain in breasts before periods occurs due to fluid accumulation at this time due to a hormone called progesterone. It is not a sign of cancer. Please avoid salt and salty foods at least a week prior to periods. Wear a supporting or underwire bra. Do upper body exercises. These will help in reducing your problem.

These blood tests must be done on second day of menstrual cycle. When done later, the results are not correct as hormonal levels keep changing according to the day of the cycle. As you miscarried in march, there must have been a period of 3 to 6 months in which you would have been advised not to conceive. This means you have been trying for pregnancy since 4 to 6 months only. If you conceived earlier without difficulty and your periods or regular, you should be able to conceive again easily. Please take folic acid tablets 5 mg once daily at this time and meet a gynaecologist if you still have difficulty in conceiving.

It depends on which medication you have taken. Some are safe, some are not. So, one will need to know those details before answering this. Anomaly scans can pick up a lot of (more than 90%) anomalies but not each and every one.
