Viral Diseases - How Do They Spread?

General Physician, Bangalore
Viral Diseases - How Do They Spread?

Caused by the microorganisms called viruses, infections pertaining to these microorganisms are known as viral diseases. These diseases are different and diverse in nature as they are caused by a number of viruses. Among them, the common cold is the most known viral disease and occurs due to the infection of your upper respiratory tract, namely the nose and throat.

Other widespread viral infections are:

  1. Chickenpox
  2. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
  3. HPV (human papillomavirus)
  4. Shingles or herpes zoster (a viral infection that leads to the development of rash)
  5. Viral pneumonia (a condition that occurs due to viruses that are responsible for flu and colds)
  6. Viral hepatitis (inflammation of the liver that is caused by a virus)
  7. Viral meningitis (viral infection wherein inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain occurs)
  8. Rubella, mumps and measles
  9. Herpes

How do they spread?

These diseases are infectious and can easily spread from one person to another. When the microorganism enters your body, it begins to reproduce.

Different ways that they can spread include:

  1. Breathing in the germs present in airborne droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs
  2. Coming in contact with the body fluids of an infected person during sexual activity
  3. Indirect contact with these microorganisms when you touched inanimate objects handled by an infected person
  4. Viral infections can also spread through insect bites. Certain germs depend on insects as carriers such as ticks and mosquitoes for moving from host to host
  5. Having virus-contaminated water or food is another way in which viral infection can spread from person to person. Such a mode of transfer enables the virus to spread among a large number of people

After how many days after intercourse we should take ipill to avoid pregnancy. Does it work efficiently. Does it have any harmful effects.

Health Benefits of Red Wine

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics

Health Benefits of Red Wine

Benefits of Red Wine:

1. The antioxidants:

The red wine contains antioxidants, especially resveratrol, which is found in grape skins and seeds. The importance of antioxidans is long known, they fight free radicals and this way protects the healthy cells against their action.

2. Prevents heart attack:

The resveratrol has an important role in blood thining. It works quickly, preventing the platelets (cells involved in blood clotting) to stick together. Through this mechanism, the resveratrol can prevent heart attack.
Consumed with moderation, as medicine, red wine decreases the risk of heart attacks in eldry people, with aproximately 30-50%. For people who have already suffered a heart attack, the red wine has the power to prevent another attack. Red wine can increase the amount of hdl (the good cholesterol) and prevents ldl (the bad cholesterol). The studies have reported that people who regularly and moderately comsume red wine, presents a lower risk of being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. The moderate consumption of red wine reduces inflammation of chronic smokers blood vessels, prevents blood clots and reduces vessel damage caused by fat deposits.

3. Helps the digestion:

It was noticed that the natural, untreated red wine helps digestion and prevents bloating. A glass of red wine, after a meal rich in meat and fats, helps in evacuation of waste from the intestine, thus reducing the risk of gastric or duodenal ulcer.

4. Skin care:

Also the red wine is ideal for skin care. The resveratrol from its composition helps the skin to remain young and firm, protecting it from free radicals and delaying the appearance of wrinkles. To enjoy an extra of beauty and freshness at skin level, add each time in the bath watter, one or two glasses of red wine.

5. Prevents breast cancer:

The red wine prevents and keep the breast cancer under control. The scientists at harvard university have found that women who drink two glasses of red wine per day have a 50% lower chances to suffer from breast cancer, while specialists from the university of calabria, italy, found that women who have already been diagnosed with this disease can keep it under control if they drink a glass of red wine every day
6. Phytoestrogen effects:

The resveratrol is a phytoestrogen. There are certain herbs that can play the estrogen role in organism, by having similar effects. Thus, it was sugested that the red wine can combat some problems caused by lack of estrogen, such as osteoporosis or premature menopause. However, these assumpsions have not been proven yet. For those who do not like red wine, the good news is that the resveratroul is also found in peanuts, blueberries and rosehips.

I am 28 years old married. Me and wife are trying for a baby. Whenever we do the intercourse, y sperms are coming out of the vagina? And no pregnancy signs even after that. However it is normal that sperms are coming out. Then why my wife getting pregnant? What needs to be done? please suggest.

Gynaecologist, Jalandhar
It is the extra semen and not the sperms which come out and that is normal. Regarding pregnancy, I don't know for how long you are trying. If it is only 3-4 months, don't worry, just try in most fertile days of the cycle which are from 12th -16th day , counting from first day of menses

Health and Fruits

Health and Fruits

As far as possible eat the whole fruit. Avoid converting it to juice. Fruits provide us antioxidants. When we eat a whole fruit the oxidation process takes place inside our body using oxygen. But if we cut the fruit into small pieces or make a juice out of it, oxidation takes place outside as it is exposed to oxygen in the air and we lose the valuable antioxidant property of fruits.

I am 29 years old married with 2 kids, working out 4-5 times a week. Whether milk is healthy diet for grown ups. Natural or packed milk.

I am 26 years old. I had a laproscopy for ectopic pregancy. What measures should be taken if I want to get pregant. I was scared whether the next pregancy also with effect the like the first one.

MBBS, DGO, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Ectopic pregnancy usually occurs when the fallopian tube which connects the ovaries to uterus gets blocked or is diseased. You can try for pregnancy after 6 months of rest. There are definetly chances of normal pregnancy but risk of next ectopic cannot be fully ruled out. Its a matter of chance.

Practically it was period and no need to worry about pregnanacy, however theoretically ideally to rule out some rare problems it is always better to consult gynaecologist and if required some investigation.
