Mood changes ,aversion to food ,nausea, vomiting all are common in first three months of pregnancy ;as long as her general condition is good like BP, Sugar levels, Thyroid function etc) nothing much to worry. But avoid unnecessary stress, and a healthy diet is also mandatory for all pregnant women. She must do some relaxation exercise which are advisable in pregnancy.

U should first remove the cause of your stress there after you may use brahmi vati one tablet twice a day with water for one month. It will gradually subside your problem. U may also consult me after one month's medication.

How To Deal With Peer Pressure In School/College?

Peer pressure occurs when a person engages in certain activities against his/her wishes only because other people around are doing it. 

However, in school/college, your friends tend to be influential and with the intention of impressing them or “fitting in”, you might lapse into the kaleidoscope of alcohol, narcotic substances and other unfavourable habits.

Dealing with peer pressure is essential as it will keep you focused and help you remember the reason you came to school/college for. Once you give into peer pressure, turning back is very difficult and prolonged exposure to the wrong company and substances will lead to your downfall. Thus, avoiding peer pressure in an absolutely new setting is necessary.

Here are a few ways to avoid/deal with peer pressure:

  1. Introspection: It is important to know yourself and the beliefs and morals you believe in to live by your own principles. To know yourself better, you need to introspect- Do you think drinking alcohol is wrong? Is lying to your parents dangerous? Will smoking actually make you happy? 

When you are aware of the values you stand for, you will be able to take a stand better when someone forces you to do something contradictory to your beliefs.

  1. Don’t be afraid to say no: Don’t be afraid to take a negative stance regarding something you don’t want to engage in. If your companions are still forcing you, do not change your stance and try something for the sake of it. Say no with conviction and the more certain you are with your stand, the lesser people will force you into something.
  2. Choose your friends wisely: This doesn’t mean that you need to limit yourself to interacting with only certain kind of people. However, when the situation boils down to building good relations, it is advisable that you choose people who share the same beliefs and values as you. This makes you less prone to peer pressure as your friends will constantly keep reminding you what’s wrong.
  3. Avoid stressful situations: If you think you won’t be able to handle the pressure inflicted you on by your peers, avoid those situations. For example, in a party, if you’re being forced to drink alcohol despite you denying, head for the exit.

Dear Lybrate user there are many causes of anxiety, you Hv to rule out your cause first, there are medicines which help in relieving anxiety but for that I Hv to take proper history of yours then only I would b able to suggest you some medicine. My wife age 28 having sulpitac 100 mg tablet for depression. She it taking it for last 6 months. When we check the prolactin levels as suggested by gynecology doctor it more than 200. Now her menses was not occurring still 2 months. Do prolactin levels reach above 200 due to sulpitac 100 mg. Kindly clarify. Now we have consulted a psychiatrist. He suggested for zipsodn. We have given this tablet for two day .but it's not working. She started with same problem. So I have given her sulpitac again. But my gynecology sujesting me to stop sulpitac and give cabgolin tablet to reduce prolactin levels. Can I give sulpitac & cabgolin to gather.

If diagnosis is depression. Then follow this protocol as I can't say what is Zipsodn. 1.Start Tab Nexito 10 mg OD. 2.Reduce the dose of Sulpitac to 50 mg. 3.After 3 weeks stop Sulpitac and continue with Nexito 10 mg. 4.I don't think there is any urgency to add carbegolin. 5.Repeat Prolactin level after 1 month of stoppage of Sulpitac. It's very difficult to guide you in a open forum like this. So it's better to consult your Psychiatrist for whatever problem you are facing or Consult any Psychiatrist online.

Mood disorders are common psychological problems that affect a vast portion of the human populace all over the world every year. These occur when there is a shift or imbalance in a person's psyche which affects his or her daily function and interpersonal relations in varying degrees. Each individual is affected by these conditions in a different capacity and responds to them in a distinct manner.

Mood disorders generally manifest themselves as fluctuations in a person's temperament. It is triggered by various factors. These mental illnesses range from mild to severe, the latter requiring urgent psychological counseling and treatment. A mild condition may even develop into a painful and chronic one without any form of remedial intervention.

What are the most common types of mood disorders?

There are many distinctive categories of mood disorders that can affect a person. The most commonly occurring ones are as follows:

  1. Major depressive disorder
  2. Bipolar disorder
  3. Dysthymia
  4. Cyclothymia
  5. Seasonal affective disorder (sad)

Major depression is the most frequently occurring type of mood disorder. It causes mental and emotional turmoil, as well as physical anguish. Those affected by it may experience a single episode in isolation or multiple episodes over a period of time. The milder version of this condition is known as dysthymia.

Bipolar disorder is a comparatively rare condition that causes alternating states of extreme mania and depression. It is also known as manic-depressive illness. The mild version of this is called cyclothymia.

Seasonal affective disorder or sad is a depressive disorder that is known to affect those living in colder climes. It is caused generally by the lack of warmth and light, the onset of which begins in late autumn and lasts till the end of winter.

What causes a mood disorder?

Mood disorders are very difficult to diagnose as they can be caused by an assortment of triggers and the symptoms are not always apparent. This is particularly true in the case of dysthymia and cyclothymia.

Some of the usual factors that lead to mood disorders are:

  1. Chronic stress and anxiety
  2. Anomalies in the functioning of the nervous system
  3. Prolonged periods of isolation
  4. Genetics
  5. Childhood abuse and trauma
  6. Ineffectual coping mechanisms
  7. Insufficient nourishment/malnutrition

In most cases, a combination of multiple factors usually leads to the development of mood disorders and other mental illnesses.

My seven year old child has anxiety issues—significant being too anxious about time lines and suffers from separation related anxiety, feeling of insecurity while stepping out of home or coming across surprises/uncertainties. Separation anxiety or social anxiety start at young age only, around age 5-6 years. Your child is lying in this age group and is prone to experience anxieties due to separation from home, family or significant family member, or due to being avoidant of social contexts like school or groups. As you are saying, your child seems to be experiencing some emotional problems which you said are related to avoidant behaviors. The feelings of insecurity are quite common among children, therefore, it needs to be seen that what you are telling is any clinically significant anxiety or not. Many children develop emotional sensitiveness which makes them appear anxious. But there are various aspects to a child's behavior which can be ruled out only by detailed interviewing or observation. This is possible only when you visit a clinical psychologist for proper identification of symptoms.

The older antipsychotic used to cause lot of side effects like pulling drawing sensation dystonia rigidity and tremor and used to increase prolactin level. The. Newer one causes hyperlipidemia and increased glucose le. Vel..Yet there are few drugs which doesn't increase glucose lipid or prolactin level. They are Aripiprazole ,Zyspuradone and perhaps Lusiradone. However there may other side effects like Restlessness Called akathisia and cardiac side effects and so o e should only discuss the case with a Medical specialist and should not dare to give these drug himself.

As a pulmonologist, I see patients with breathing problems on a daily basis. Too often do I hear patients express regret about not quitting smoking earlier. The truth of the matter is that it is never too late! quitting smoking is more important than any medicine a doctor can prescribe in preventing long term health problems. So I encourage all my patients who smoke to try every day to cut back and eventually quit smoking.

Patient who smoke need to be ready to quit smoking. If you are not ready to quit smoking, you should think spend a minute every day thinking about the reason why quitting smoking is a good idea. Once you are ready, you should talk to your doctor about ways to help you quit. Even if you don’t ask, your doctor may ask about ways to help you quit smoking. Just talking about how to quit smoking is more important that a prescription pad, and there is no quick fix to quitting. Although there are medicines than can help people quit, making a plan is the critical first step.

Nicotine is a powerful drug, more addictive than any drug that can be bought illegally. The nicotine found in cigarettes takes between 7-10 seconds to reach the brain. The thousands of other chemicals in cigarettes are just along for the ride, and they are more toxic than anything you can imagine putting in your body. Most people remember their first cigarette, which was probably bad experience. But the nicotine keeps people coming back for more, even though the adverse effects are obvious to even a first time smoker.

Once you are ready to quit, remember a few things:

  1. Set a date. The first of the month, someone’s birthday, or the day after a particularly stressful week. Try your best to stick to that date.
  2. Get rid of all the matches, lighters, ashtrays, and that last cigarette you have around.
  3. Tell your family and friends you are going to give it a shot. Get their support!
  4. If you slip, don’t worry, there is always tomorrow. Give it another chance!

Finally, using a medicine that replaces the nicotine, like the nicoderm patch, nicotine gum, or nicotine lozenges, replaces the only thing in the cigarettes that your brain is addicted to. Once you have gotten over those urges, the chances of giving the cigarettes up for good increases 3-fold! using another medicine, like chantix or buproprion, can increase the chances of quitting even more, just ask your doctor.

Iq the intelligence quotient as measured by intelligence tests are being carried out by trainned psychologists.

There are several misconceptions related to intelligence and mental status.

1. For Eg. - The belief that since one is very intelligent he can't be mentally ill. This is not true. Illness and intelligence are different things. But it is true that an intelligent but sick is in a better position than retarded. Intelligent one will have more adaptive and survival skills.
2. Less intelligence is a sign of week mind or more chance to be mentally ill. This is absolutely wrong. Intelligence varies among people but majority are average.
3. Mental retardation is a state of iq less than average say below 70. Does not mean that they are ill. With good diet and trainning they can be helped to live and can be taught jobs depending on the level of retardation.
4. Love, care and trainning can make one the best. Some times less intelligent are the most useful and of help in need of time. So be away from misconceptions.

I think I had a panic attack three days back. I felt like my head was hit with something and my arms were all numb, I say on floor at metro station and started crying like anything, also got detached from the environment. And felt like in going crazy. Why would it happen. And would it happen soon again?

Dear Lybrate User, I understand. Feeling detached from the environment, numbness in arms and having a heavy head are some of the symptoms of a panic attack. Other symptoms include, increased heart rate and shortness of breath etc. A panic attack can occur for many reasons, such as stress, phobias or a recent traumatic incident. With counselling it is possible to reduce the occurrence of a panic attack. Doctor this years my entrance exam was not so good n last years also I have appeared for medical entrance bt as need is tough so I was not able to qualify the exam. N nw day by day m going into depression. Now days m suffering from too much anger even at small things n after that tears come from my eyes. Whenever I think abt my future my head counts n sometimes I feel to end up everything even my life. My parents expect alot from me bt I hav not satisfied them. My father has spent all the money in my education. My biggest dream is to become a doctor. Since childhood I have been dreaming o becoming doctor. You can become whatever you want if you believe in yourself. You have an anger-related depression that will make it difficult to concentrate. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. As regards the concentration you are sure to have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it; together with depression I can imagine your problems. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.
