Hearing impairment is a condition that can be dealt with and treated by surgery in most cases. Conventional hearing aids are also used to take care of this situation, but in a few cases, they cannot be implemented. In such circumstances, a BAHA implant surgery or a BAHA hearing implant takes care of the problem. Also called as the open fit hearing aids or the bone hearing aid, these are the hearing aids attached to the head instead of the traditional method of fixing in the ear. Hearing Impaired Patients with external ear problems and chronic middle ear conditions who cannot wear the hearing aids can undergo this surgery. The simple surgical procedure involves a skin graft behind the ear where an incision would be drilled into the skull. A titanium screw and abutment will be inserted together. The skin is then sewn back and left to heal. After the recovery period of two to three months when the skin gets adjusted to the titanium implant, the transmitted hearing aid is affixed to the outer head. Sound waves would be passed through transmitter directly through the bone- bypassing the outer and middle ear. As a result of this, the waves get interpreted as neural signals and get passed on to the brain directly. Hence the end results are utmost effective. The BAHA is also comfortable to wear, and there are no known side effects when using this treatment.
