I'm 17 year old male. What type of exercise I want to practice to be muscular. And time duration. Can over exercise Leads to harmful on health? Suggest me with appropriate answer.

B.Sc. - Dietitics / Nutrition, Nutrition Certification,Registered Dietitian
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Delhi
Hi, If you’re aiming to gain some strength and build muscle, you must follow the points mentioned below: 1. Start exercising. If you’re a beginner, focus on bodyweight exercises like push up, pull up and squat. The basic push up and chin up are invaluable exercises you can do with very little equipment. Increase their difficulty by adding reps or affixing weights to your legs. 2. Consume a balanced diet. It's important to eat big meals to fuel muscle growth while you're training. You’ll need to eat healthy, whole foods that will nourish and restore your muscles. Consume all types of fruits, vegetables, grains, oils and dairy products. 3. Take adequate rest. Many people take this step lightly, but it's absolutely essential when it comes to gain strength. That means you won't be able to work out as hard or lift as much as you otherwise would, not to mention you'll be more prone to injury if you're feeling sleepy. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night, possibly more depending on your individual needs, during heavy workout periods. 4. Increase protein intake. Protein proves to be the most essential nutrient when it comes down to gaining strength or building muscle. Therefore, consume all types of protein from both veg and non veg food items. Chicken breast, egg whites, fish, pulses provide you all the protein you need without containing any unnecessary fat. 5. Focus on compound movements. Compound movements are those which engages more than one muscle group. Exercises like bench press, squat, dead lift are great examples of compound exercises to gain strength quickly. 6. Lift heavy. If your main aim is to gain strength, you’ll need to lift heavy weights in the gym and thus, lower the repetitions of your sets. Moderate-rep sets are important when training for muscle size. However, to build strength, you're going to have to train with heavier weights, meaning you'll do fewer reps. 7. Limit cardio to once or twice per week. Cardio exercises like running, swimming, and biking are great ways to keep your endurance good and your circulation healthy. However, they aren't the best exercises you can do if your goal is to gain strength. Weight training requires loads of energy, and if yours has already been used up by a long run or bike ride, you won't have enough left over to give weight training your best shot. Limit cardio to once or twice per week so your energy reserves are ready to expend on building strength. Best of luck!

If you are suddenly feeling low without any reason, it is possible that you are not getting sufficient Vitamin B complex. Always have a banana in the morning on empty stomach. It has a lot of effect on your mood. Whenever you are anxious, chew some cashews, they will also help in elevating mood.

1. COOK FROM SCRATCH This is one of the most important life skills you can learn. It allows you to have complete control of what goes into your food. 2. EAT A BALANCED DIET Aim to eat a balanced diet that contains each of the food groups in the correct proportions. 3. VARIETY IS KEY – EAT THE RAINBOW Fill your diet with a wide range of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, eggs, pulses, nuts, seeds, wholegrains and naturally low fat dairy foods. When it comes to fruit and veg, different colours provide your body with the different nutrients it needs to stay strong and healthy – it's not just greens that are good for you! 4. UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE EATING Make an effort to learn about the food you're eating – we all need to understand where food comes from and how it affects our bodies. 5. EAT NUTRITIOUS CALORIES Make sure the majority of your energy intake comes from nutritious calories that also provide your body with nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre and good fats. Avoid empty calories. 6. DON'T SKIP BREAKFAST Breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and helps you to be alert and awake throughout the day. Make sure you always eat a nutritious breakfast. Make it wholesome and make it count. 7. READ THE SMALL PRINT It's important to read packaging correctly. Be aware of the recommended portion sizes, and the sugar, salt and saturated fat contents. Remember that not all E-numbers are bad, but too many is often a bad sign. 8. DRINK MORE WATER Water is an essential part of your diet. Drink plenty of water and avoid empty calories from things such as fizzy drinks, energy drinks or juices with added sugar. Eat your calories don't drink them. 9. KEEP ACTIVE Exercise is an extremely important factor in staying healthy so try to be as active as you can. 10. SLEEP WELL Make sure you get enough sleep – it's an essential part of being healthy and directly affects how well we are able to learn, grow and act in life. While we're asleep, our bodies have that all-important time to repair.

Hi there I'm facing a problem with weight loss. I try very hard to lose weight. But I never lost an inch also. Please...
It is generally noticed that the people who fast for long hours (self dieting), or take more carbs and less protein, tend to put on more weight because their body start storing even carbs. This causes imbalance in the body so you have to first deal with your deficiencies and nutrient gaps. To loose with heathy food like eat every 2-3 hours in moderate amounts, a combination of more fibre, whole grains, sprouts, legumes, salads, 3-4 cups green tea, 1 fist dry fruits to have virgin fats, no to aerated & sugary beverages, junk foods, fast foods etc. And exercise for 45 min including yoga especially kapal bharti - 15 min every day.

Will vitamin D save my life? Should I really be taking four times the recommended daily dose?

Master in Food/ Nutrition/ Dietetics

Will vitamin D save my life? Should I really be taking four times the recommended daily dose?
Hi lybrate-user, vitamin d is a fat soluble vitamin, if you take it more than the recommended allowance, there are chances of vitamin d toxicity (leading to hypercalemia or high level of calcium in the blood). My recommendation would be take this vitamin only if your blood reports are deficient in it. Consult a physician for the right dosage.

Health Facts

Gist of rujuta divekar's talk today organised by borivali medical brotherhood:

1. Throw out your weighing scale cause it is not a reflection of how healthy you are.

2. Bmi is not an accurate representation as each of us is different. Instead two new terms have come into play- tofi and foti (thin outside and fat inside and vice versa) means you are unhealthy even if you look thin on the outside.

3. New research is showing that cholesterol is not directly the cause of heart disease.

4. Eat 4-5tsps of ghee everyday. It is good for the gut bacteria and will actually help in reducing abdomen fat.

5. Bring back rice on your plate. Not brown not white but handpounded. Eat rice at night too if you have grown up eating it. Leave the quinoa to the south americans

6. Stop looking at food as carbs, protein & fat. Instead look at it from farmer, trader, consumer point of view. So eat what takes the least time to come to you - eat local!

7. All fruit is the same. All have fructose- again eat local grown seasonal fruit.

8. Bananas are good for you.

9. Eat before you drink alcohol - eat early, drink early.

10. Weight loss industry has somehow managed to get everyone to believe that what tastes yuck is healthy and good for you. Don't equate healthy with yucky tasting food.

11. Keep moving. For every half hour you sit, move at least 3mins.

12.150mins of exercise a week is mandatory.

14. Weight bearing exercise is what one should be doing to keep bones strong and for stronger muscles.

15. Oil your hair once a week, rub ghee on your feet and drink plenty of water to alleviate bloating.

16. Salt is not bad for you. Don't go salt free. Use rock salt.

17. Sugar is also not bad for you provided you eat it the right way. Indian sweets are better than your pastries and brownies etc.

18. Work on strengthening your legs.

19. Don't believe that drinking green tea will make you lose weight. A myth that google and weight loss industry has promoted just because chinese are thin.

20. Red meat is absolutely fine as long as you watch the quantity.

21. Latest research is linking wine to breast cancer

22. Eat so much that when you get up from the table, you should feel light.

23. Don't count calories

24. Most important - remove fear from your head while eating. (we all know about the mind-body connection by now)

25. Make lifestyle changes and don't follow fad diets which rob your body of essential vitamins and minerals)

Morning sex is good for the brain

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S)
Sexologist, Chennai
Morning sex is good for the brain

Morning sex is good for the brain

Just several minutes of morning sex can keep you looking younger and improve your mood for the rest of the day.

Sex, on its own, comes with a few benefits but did you know that having sex first thing in the morning is capable of improving your mental abilities?

Men accumulate testosterone as they as they sleep and from the time they wake up, they have a three-hour window when they are brimming with testosterone.

That early morning erection is not called 'morning wood' or 'morning glory' for nothing. Whatever it is called, having an erection on waking up is as good a reason as any to initiate a little morning sex.

Not only is it a great way to kick start your day because it'll leave you feeling lively and energised, a great love-making session will also alert your brain nerves making you mentally alert after you have spent up to eight hours asleep.

Another great perk is that morning sex is a really good way to connect with your partner before the day begins.

Studies also back this up, with a recent one saying, 'adults who start their day with sex are more likely to be happier and healthier than those who start their day with a cup of coffee and breakfast.'

So dump the coffee and hump your boo
