Knee Osteoarthritis - 6 Signs You Are Suffering From It!

Knee Osteoarthritis - 6 Signs You Are Suffering From It!

Osteoarthritis, although a disorder occurring in old age, can affect young people too. What exactly is osteoarthritis? It is a condition in which the cartilage in the joints, which act as cushioning between two bones, start wearing away. This causes the bones of the joints to rub against each other, thereby resulting in pain, stiffness, swelling, inability to move freely and sometimes formation of bone spurs. Also, the bones become susceptible to more damage because the shock absorbing capacity is decreased.

Causes
The most common cause of osteoarthritis is age and almost everybody will develop some degree of this disorder at some point. However, there are risks of developing this disorder at earlier ages too. The possible reasons are listed below.

  1. As already discussed, age is one of the main reasons for the wearing off of the cartilage tissues.
  2. Excess weight causes a lot of increased pressure on the joints, especially knees, thereby causing the cartilage to wear out faster, leading to osteoarthritis.
  3. Some people develop osteoarthritis in the knee due to inherited abnormalities from previous generations.
  4. Women are more susceptible to this disorder than men. Women above 55 years are likely to experience osteoarthritis in the knee.
  5. The occupation of an individual can also be a reason for this disorder. Those individuals who have jobs in which repetitive stress to the joints is normal, they tend to suffer from osteoarthritis in the knees earlier.
  6. Athletes who are involved in football, tennis, running, etc. are also susceptible to osteoarthritis in the knees. However, regular and moderate exercise helps in strengthening the joints and thereby decreasing the risks of this disorder.
  7. People with metabolic disorders, who have excess iron or excess growth hormones, tend to have a higher risk of osteoarthritis.

Symptoms

  1. Engaging oneself in a number of physical activities causes an increase in pain, but it gets better with rest.
  2. Swelling around the knee area occurs.
  3. Joints feel warm.
  4. The knee becomes stiff, which occurs most when one has been sitting for a long time.
  5. Mobility of the knee is decreased and it becomes difficult to sit and get up after sitting.
  6. Crackly and creaking sounds are heard when the knee moves.

There are various treatments of osteoarthritis, but one of the main remedies is weight loss. Doctors recommend certain specific exercises to reduce the pain. For medications, certain anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers are suggested. There are many more treatment methods, but these are some of the most effective ones.

Why does my back bone pain? Is it because of some injuries done during childhood?

Why does my back bone pain? Is it because of some injuries done during childhood?
Hello lybrate user, back pain has many causes like age related degenerative changes in the spine, trauma leading to bony fractures or even soft tissue injuries, tumors of the spine etc. In younger patients back pain is commonly due to slip disc, muscle spasm, infections like tuberculosis or rarely due to some congenital abnormality of the spine or spinal deformities. You have to understand that this is just a small list of causes related to the spine. Sometimes problems of the chest or abdomen can also cause pain to be felt in the back. Childhood injuries, I would think is a very rare cause of back pain as minor injuries in children heal very well. Injuries severe enough to cause pain now would have a single episode in the past where you could point out your similar severe symptoms specifically. For a complete assessment, I would suggest, you see an orthopaedician or a spine surgeon.

Dear since you on bed/rest for 15 days, your muscles must have become quite weak and hence is this pain. Do hot fomentation and apply a pain killer gel and support your knee joints with 6" crepe bandages 2 for each knee. Applied from above the ankles to the base of thighs. No squatting on floor, use a commode and avoid stairs. Take a pain killer like ultracet sos for few days. Once your pain settles, start a short morning walk and increase it gradually. If of no avail. Consult an ortho. Surgeon around u.

You can go for conservative management by keeping ice in the pain ful area and you can wear thigh braces to build the tone which will reduce the pressure falling on the painful hip.

At your age calipers are unlikely to correct the bow legs deformity. Most probably you will need surgery. In delhi we have good centers where it can b done satisfactorily. Contact me if you need my help.

My wife fell down from my bike at her back with holding kid. Fortunately, kid didn't get anything hit as she covered from her front. It has been there for 8 days and she says she's feeling inner pain at lower back pain and hand elbow. I am planning to take her to the doctor. But, I guess, they definitely ask us go for x-ray or some scanning. Could you please suggest what would be the treatment for this to take care of her?

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Management for soft tissue injuries, ice packs intensively at home - limb elevation especially lower limbs at night while sleeping - take a gentle anti inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol provided it suits your body for 3-5 days - local analgesic spray like dynapar qps can be used after ice fomentation but kindly make sure that there is bony injury because management is entirely different for that. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

If you are in stress - go for stress relief. Choose a place with more air circulation to sleep. Lie on your back - tighten every single muscle from your neck to toe (one by one) and allow it to relax - repeat it again. If possible go for swimming.

You might have pulled a leg muscle. Over-stretching can lead to a muscle strain, which is also called a pulled muscle and involves the muscle fiber tearing. Try self care at home: Protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the PRICE formula) can help the affected muscle. Here's how: First, remove all constrictive clothing, including jewelry, in the area of muscle strain. Then: Protect the strained muscle from further injury. Rest the strained muscle. Avoid the activities that caused the strain and other activities that are painful. Ice the muscle area (20 minutes every hour while awake). Ice is a very effective anti-inflammatory and pain-reliever. Small ice packs, such as packages of frozen vegetables or water frozen in foam coffee cups, applied to the area may help decrease inflammation. Compression can be gently applied with an Ace or other elastic bandage, which can both provide support and decrease swelling. Do not wrap tightly. Elevate the injured area to decrease swelling. Prop up a strained leg muscle while sitting, for example. Activities that increase muscle pain or work the affected body part are not recommended until the pain has significantly improved. If you hear a "popping" sound with the injury, cannot walk, or there is significant swelling, pain, fever, you should be examined by a doctor.

Dear Lybrate user, I'd not advise to quit your job but I'd advise something you should do systematically to get back to pain free life. 1- Consult an Interventional pain specialist or orthopedician trained in spine to rule out any significant problem with your spine ( any chronic pain for more than 2 months is not a symptom but itself a disease of chronic pain, irrespective of underlying disease) 2- Get your Vit D and calcium level checked, if less take supplements or increase it . 3- Take help from specialist about ergonomic/ posture correction at work. 4- Avoid loading your spine by sitting for longer period, you can take intermittent walk or stand in between 5- Take help of Physiotherapist If there is any spasm of muscles at lower back 6- Strengthen Your lumbar paraspinal muscles. These are steps you should take to help yourself from chronic back pain.
