Some times I have muscular pain in my shoulder that converts in acute headache at night. What should I do?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Normally these two symptoms are no connected with each other as headache is a separate entity in itself, and if you have regular headaches, then it is wise to get yourself evaluated by a neurophysician. For your localized shoulder pain, you can start with gentle anti inflammatory medication which suits you, physical therapy with modalities initially till your pain is there, and then maybe you can switch to strengthening exercises, take adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation, give rest to your affected shoulder for few days. And let me know in few days time how you are feeling. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards

Hair tends to grow “progressively” as one ages. It is our hormones and our genetic makeup that dictate the patterns of hair growth in most of us. Testosterone is the most potent of the male hormones. Testosterone stimulates hair growth on the face and body. Generally, the more testosterone, the faster and coarser body and facial and body hair will grow. Beginning at puberty, and often accelerating during the 20’s, total body hair increases. The changing pattern of hair growth on the shoulders and back can be disconcerting to many males. Normal levels of testosterone vary wildly for men, and so a visit to the doctor will, no doubt, prove unenlightening. A medical solution is not in the cards. Few men would prefer to use estrogens as a means to medicte their hair growth, as it may have negative effects on libido. The exception is males who are in gender transition. They will generally be taking female hormones to feminize their bodies. Estrogens and testosterone blockers are the only option for slowing hair growth in men. The hair patterns men develop can usually be attributed to heredity. Even though often only one male in a family exhibits excessive hair growth, the offending gene may be found on the maternal side, or it may have skipped a generation.

Massage your scalp every night with a tablespoon of amla juice, a bit of almond oil and a few drops of lemon juice. This can prevent greying. Shikakai has always been considered a brilliant hair cleanser. Experts say that it can also prevent premature greying. Sugar scrub. Sugar can help exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating the area may help if the dark skin is caused by a buildup of dead skin. Combine fresh lemon juice, a teaspoon of sugar, and a tablespoon of honey.

Non Surgical Hair Treatments That Can Help!

Most of us take our thick hair for granted in our youth and fail to care for them. Not many notice the receding hairline or thinning of hair until it is too late. A hair restoration can bring back the fuller and thicker locks without any invasive surgical treatment. If hair loss bothers you, and you want a treatment that is safer, you can go for nonsurgical treatments.

The great advantage of these procedures is the increase in the density of hair that reverses your age clock back to 10 years. Non - surgical hair restoration treatments are becoming more popular as they are less invasive and safer than the surgical treatments.

There are three common FDA treatments performed for hair restoration: finasteride, minoxidil and low-level laser hair therapy.

  1. Finasteride: This is an oral treatment, and it is available only by prescription. This medicine can be incorporated into your daily routine as supplement. This medication blocks male-type baldness. If taken consistently, this can slowly improve hair thickness and regrowth of hair in the bald area wherever the hair follicles are still active. The overall success rate has been reported as 65 percent. Lesser than 2 percent people experience side effects. The general side effects include erectile dysfunction and low libido. In such cases, the patient will be advised to take half the dosage.
  2. Minoxidil: This is an over-the-counter medication and does not usually requires the prescription. Almost 50 percentage of the users experience regrowth of hair that is shortened due to damage or thicker hair in a few months when applied consistently. This treatment is available in liquid as well as in the form of foam. The liquid form is quite popular as it dries quickly. The patient should apply the liquid on the crown or affected areas once or twice a day.
  3. Laser Therapies:
    • Laser comb: There are many low-intensity laser therapies available that can be done by oneself. The most common being the comb type laser instrument. Most of these work similarly, and they only differ in the number of laser diodes they are built with. The user is directed to use the brush for 15- 20 minutes every day over the affected areas. These instruments cost between Rs. 5000 to Rs.50,000 depending on its effectiveness.
    • Helmet: Many hair loss studios have the laser helmet facility where they have 100 laser diodes built in the instruments. This treatment cost between Rs. 60,000 - Rs. 1,50,000 depending on the effectiveness of the machine. In this, the person is made to sit comfortably for 30minutes to an hour during the treatment. The person can watch TV, read books or rest while the treatment is going on.

Hi Although there can be many causes for heel pain like spurs, fascial inflammation, infection, trauma etc but normally plantar fascitis is the most common cause especially if there is no history of any injury or any s/s of inflammation or infection like swelling, skin redness etc. This kind of pain is usually due to inflammation of your heel fascia. It is chronic pain which get aggravated especially when you walk more and is better with rest. Treatment modalities are aimed at relieving inflammation of the fascia, like ice packs, physical therapy, footwear modification and anti-inflammatory therapy.
