Schizophrenia - How Your Genes Can Put You At Risk?

Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental and emotional condition that is characterised by a heavily distorted thought process as well as hallucinations and even extreme fear that borders on paranoia. Let us find out more about this debilitating disease:

Causes:

  1. Genetics: Genetic factors play an important role in the development of schizophrenia.
  2. Environment: Possible environmental factors include obstetric complications, the mother's exposure to influenza during pregnancy or starvation. It has also been suggested that stress, trauma even migration can lead to the emergence of schizophrenia. 
  3. Neurodevelopmental Factors: Schizophrenia appears to be a neurodevelopmental disorder. That is changes that cause the illness have been occurring from the earliest stages of development even in utero, and may continue to influence the development of the brain over the first 25 years of life. 

Symptoms

This disease has a variety of symptoms include cognitive and emotional ones that can vary in the degree and severity. One of the most common symptoms included hallucinations and delusions where the patient may end up imagining things that do not really exist. The patient may also be gripped by sudden and crippling fear like paranoia, which can be debilitating as far as everyday functioning of the person goes. The symptoms can also interfere with the way a person deals with situations and life skills on a cognitive basis. Withdrawal and hopelessness are also a part of this disease.

 

Treatment
The earliest signs and symptoms must be referred to a psychiatrist. The treatment involves the management of the case of an individual basis along with psychological rehabilitation programs and inclusion of the patient in self-help groups. Housing and employment programs must also be availed so as to keep the patient busy. Also, behaviour therapy will be required in such cases. The mode of counselling should usually be on a one on one basis, although many doctors also suggest that group therapy can help in showing examples of progress so as to encourage the patient to change and get a new lease of life.

Depression - Understanding Its Symptoms!

The one condition that is highly underdiagnosed and undertreated is depression as symptoms rarely go away without an expert’s assistance. The ICD-10 or the International Classification of Diseases (Tenth Revision) is an internationally recognized diagnostic system that classifies several known psychological disorders based on the number of criteria symptoms specified by the system. It is commonly used by physicians to diagnose and treat depression in patients.

Primary Symptoms of Depression as per ICD-10
Physicians look for three vital signs of depression before evaluating other symptoms to identify the severity of the depression correctly. These three symptoms include persistent sadness or a bad mood, low energy or constant fatigue and loss of interest and pleasure in daily activities. Depressed mood or sadness is identified through self-subjective reports from the patient or through observations from others living around the patient. Loss of interest or pleasure or experiencing low energy/fatigue in any, in most or all activities is also evaluated through subjective accounts from the patient or through observations by others.

Even if at least one of the above three symptoms have been present in the patient for most days for at least two weeks, the physician then proceeds to evaluate if the patient has symptoms from the remaining seven out of ten signs included in the ICD-10 system.

Associated Symptoms of Depression as per ICD-10
The seven associated symptoms are evaluated only if the patient has one or more of the three above mentioned symptoms. These seven symptoms include the following:

  1. Disturbed Sleep: The patient being unable to sleep in almost all or most days including cases of insomnia or hypersomnia.
  2. Low concentration: The patient is shown to lack concentration or is indecisive during daily activities and shows signs of vacillation.
  3. Lack of self-confidence: The patient is known to show low levels of self-esteem and a general feeling of self-worthlessness and guilt in during everyday interactions.
  4. Slowed movement: Slowed movement is considered as a symptom only if others observe it and not through self-evaluation. This includes agitation and retardation in the day to day activities and being unable to perform motor functions efficiently.
  5. Excessive guilt and self-blame: The patient is feeling unreasonable levels of guilt and self-blame and shows signs of self-reproach.
  6. A sudden change in appetite levels: The patient shows sudden increase or decrease in appetite. This also includes cases where the patient loses or gains more than 5% weight in a month or less with no changes to diet and nutrition. Varying levels of appetite on a day to day basis is also a symptom under this category.
  7. Suicidal Tendencies: The patient expresses repeated thoughts about his/her death with no clear plan, or attempts to commit suicide or expresses a plan to commit suicide.

The number of symptoms from the three primary and seven associated symptoms may vary patient to patient and physicians use these ten symptoms under the ICD-10 to evaluate the severity of the mental health condition and proceed with treatment.

OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is a mental condition, which traps people in a cycle of repetitive thoughts that push them to do repetitive behaviors. As the name states, the obsession over certain things compels them to do it over and over again. These actions will only help you feel relieved for a short time and soon the cycle starts back again.

Symptoms of OCD

The symptoms of OCD are classified into two groups, one for the obsessive behavior and the other for compulsive behavior. Some of the common symptoms for these are mentioned below:

Obsessive behaviors

As the name states this means obsessing over certain things, which varies from person to person. Some of the things could be:

1. Being scared about making mistakes

2. The fear of being embarrassed in public situations

3. Constantly being scared about contamination by germs, microbes or dirt

4. Doubts about sure and simple situations and the need to be constantly reassured about them

Compulsive behaviors

The obsessions usually results in compulsive behaviors, which you may need to perform to reassure and relieve yourself of the anxiety temporarily. Some of these may include:

1. Trying to constantly arrange things in a certain way and still not being satisfied

2. Thoughts, words and images being stuck in your head throughout the day that may keep you disturbed and cause to lose sleep

3. You may even repeat specific words or actions multiple times as a measure of self reassurance.

4. Hoarding of items, which have no value

Causes of OCD

Biological factors: Certain chemical imbalances in the brain may lead to OCD, which may happen due to hormonal or biological changes. In fact certain infections are also known to trigger OCD in people.

Environmental factors: Certain types of mental trauma have been known to trigger OCD as well, such as

1. Office, school, college or other work related stresses over a long period of time

2. The passing away of a near and dear one

3. Relationship problems

4. Repressed abuses from earlier in life

Treatments

Most treatments of OCD are categorized into two types:

1. Cognitive behavioral therapy: This is a counseling based therapy where you may be slowly asked to face your fears and overcome them over a period of time.

2. Medications: Antidepressants, inhibitors, or antipsychotic drugs or relaxants in various combinations may be used to treat OCD.

3. Electroconvulsive therapy: Only in the rarest of cases would doctors consider electroconvulsive therapy, if the patient is a danger to themselves or others around them.

Each and every person on this planet has to deal with the loss of a loved one at some point of their life or the other. It is an undeniable and unavoidable part of the human existence. However, at times, the grief can affect the person so much that their psychological, emotional and physical health may be affected. Their normal day- to-day functioning may be affected as a result of their extreme reaction to the loss of their loved one. In such a case it is ideal to seek treatment from a certified medical professional such as a counselor or psychologist. If the condition is even more serious and the patient requires help to treat him or her, then it is advisable to go to a psychiatrist.

However, the following tips commonly given by mental health professionals may help to deal with such a loss:

  • Accepting one's emotion: Sometimes an individual may remain in denial about the loss of the loved one or about his or her own reaction to it. This increases the negative emotion as it does not find a medium of expression. The person withdraws into himself or herself, and is slowly unable to conduct the usual daily activities. The first step therefore is to fully accept the reality of the event and one's own response to it. It can help to speak to a friend or family member about one's own response, or even release the grief by crying. Such cathartic avidities are the first step.
  • Taking care of oneself: Often after the death of a loved one, an individual may become wary of his or her own condition and fail to look after himself or herself. This should be avoided. Normal diet, exercise and activities are required.
  • Channeling grief into productive activity: Constantly focusing on the loss of the loved one can increase the trauma and stress. Sometimes it helps to focus on helping others, e.g. Volunteering at a charity or assisting others in some way. Even taking up artistic pursuits or any productive hobby proves to be beneficial.

Eating Disorders - Are You Suffering From Any One Of Them?

Eating disorders can be defined as conditions that influence your eating behaviour significantly and which may give rise to serious health issues. Eating disorders are associated with behaviours like compulsively counting calories, puking after meals, living on a rigid diet etc. which often leads to a feeling of self-loathing and obsessive thoughts about food and weight.

Here are the three most common eating disorders and the symptoms by which they can be identified.

1. Anorexia nervosa - This disorder is considered to be a mortally dangerous condition in which the body weight reduces drastically. An individual is terrified about gaining weight and can take extreme steps to maintain their weight and shape, often leading to starvation, vomiting and many other health problems.

Common symptoms include:

  1. Reducing the amount of food to be consumed to cut down the calories
  2. Exercising beyond capacity to burn calories
  3. Recurrently monitoring your shape, weight and appearance
  4. Skipping meals
  5. Avoiding social gatherings where you will be offered food
  6. Irregular menstrual cycles in women
  7. Erectile dysfunction in men

2. Bulimia nervosa - Mostly observed among people in their mid-teens, Bulimia nervosa is a serious type of eating disorder associated with episodes of bingeing and purging with the individual being unable to regulate their eating habits. Moreover, the person suffering from this disease often feels guilty and horror-struck about weight gain and forces himself/herself to vomit.


Normally, people suffering from this condition exhibit the following habits:

  1. Binge eating
  2. Use of laxatives or throw up forcibly to get rid of calories
  3. Feeling exhausted and guilty
  4. Experiencing irregularity in their menstrual cycles
  5. The inability to maintain normal weight, in spite of trying to eliminate calories

3. Binge-eating disorder - This disorder is characterised by overeating, eating even when you don't feel hungry and continuing to eat even after feeling full. People suffering from this disorder cultivate a feeling of guilt inside them for overeating but do not try to nullify its effect by vomiting or exercising intensely. Some of the most prominent symptoms of this disorder include:

  1. Eating alone to hide the embarrassment caused due to overeating
  2. Eating quicker than normal people
  3. Being overweight
  4. Binge eating at minimum one instance every week

My mother is 62 years old. She is a patient of depression since 25 yrs. Four years back she was prescribed licab until 6 months before she severely got ill and diagnosed with ITP. The doctors zeroed on licab and stopped it. We consulted a psychiatrist and prescribed her with mirtaz 30 mg and nexito 15 mg but to no use. There has been a relapse and she is not responding to medicines for last 6 months. Whats your advice sir. Licab needs to be started or there is some alternate medicines.

Hello dear, see first of all since as you are mentioning lithium was the predominant Medicine prescribed earlier. It could be most likely the case of Bipolar disorder.in which yes Depression occurs. But the treatment differs. I mean requirement of mood stabilizer is there. Lithium is a mood stabilizer but there are many others since your mother had problems with lithium recently. So Consult your Psychiatrist for reviewing the diagnosis. As it will be the deciding factor in the future Management. Ok.

Dementia - 7 Early Symptoms Of It!

Dementia is a disorder characterized by a decline in mental capabilities in a person. It is primarily caused by Alzheimer's disease but can also be caused by damage to the brain from an injury or a stroke. The cells of the brain fail to communicate with each other in dementia. People suffering from dementia have difficulties in taking part in regular activities as their mental functioning is impaired.

The major symptoms of dementia are problems in recalling, ineffective communication, inability to concentrate and impaired reasoning abilities. It may also affect the short-term memory of a person when he/she may be unable to keep track of his/her belongings. Dementia can be progressive where the symptoms gradually increase with age.

Some early symptoms of dementia are-

1. Mood changes - Excessive mood swings along with changes in personality are very common symptoms of dementia. For instance- a reserved person suddenly becoming very outgoing is a commonly observed change in cases of dementia.

2. Problems in completing routine tasks - If a person suddenly starts to face problems in doing routine work such as maintaining simple accounts and paying bills then it can early signs of dementia.


3. Confusion - When a person starts to get confused in remembering small details and recognizing faces, it could point towards dementia.

4. Repetition - Dementia causes people to repeat words they have just said as the short term memory gets impaired. It also causes people to repeat small tasks a multiple number of times.

5. Losing interest - A person may start to lose interest in regular activities and avoid them altogether. They may appear devoid of emotions and not engage socially.

6. Communication - People fail to communicate effectively as they may be unable to express their thoughts clearly. They may also fail to understand when others communicate with them.

7. Impaired sense of direction - A person may fail to recognize places and wander around. He/she will face problems in going to places or in remembering places.

Feeling Needy - Is There A Way To Reduce That Feeling?

Man is different from the other species in that we are social beings. One of the main differentiators is our constant need to 'connect' with our fellow beings. Be it family or friends or society at large, we constantly need to be connected to our near and dear ones and want attention, affection, and assurance.

We need to respect this basic desire and appreciate that there is nothing wrong in feeling needed. Problems arise when this feeling to be needed gets excessive. There is a significant constant demand from the needy person, especially from those who are close to them.

Some cases where neediness is demonstrated are in new relationships. In the beginning, there is a great urge to please and therefore a greater focus on interacting with them. There is a fear of losing attention, there is insatiable excessive demand for attention - be it pleas, accusations, or demands - so as to not feel abandoned and deserted. Neediness is also quite evident in people with depression. Again, an attempt to not be abandoned by their near and dear ones.

By making a conscious effort, the neediness can be reduced, thereby making the relationships smoother and less painful to both the parties involved. As the saying goes - 'acknowledging the problem is half the problem solved'.

Needy people should realize or accept if told that there is an issue and make a conscious effort to work on reducing neediness.

1. Divert attention - As simple as it might sound, it is equally effective. Indulge in whatever interests you - exercise, meditation, dance, sing, etc. The idea is to divert attention so that the urge to feel needy and act on that instinct is reduced. This reduces the fear of being lonely and works magic. The busier you get, the less bored you are. As they say, be alone but not lonely.


2. Clarity in communication - One of the intricacies of neediness is making unclear demands. Sadly, quite often, the person does not know what he wants, and so are the demands or requests which are equally unclear. Once you are aware that your neediness is making you do this, make an effort to clearly communicate what you actually want. This reduces the stress on both the parties involved and leads to a happier engagement.

3. Clarity in relationships - Take a step back and see if your neediness is affecting any major relationships. If yes, revisit and clarify. Make an attempt and reestablish the relationships. If it is your truly near and dear ones, they will be very forthcoming and understanding.

4. Move on - In cases where your neediness has affected another person, be wise to accept their wishes and not be more 'needy' or clingy. This acceptance will make way for a lot of healthier relationships as you learn to deal with accepting your issues.

5. Socialize - Use your hobbies to make more friends and socialize more. Having more people to interact with reduces your need to be accepted by the same people. You have more people to rely on and might make more friends for keeps.

These are some simple ways to reduce neediness on others, but as mentioned, the first step is to accept and then work on ways to reduce it.

Sir please help me I am suffering from a disease I don't know what's that. I visualise porn images at most of the time of the day. When I see anyone no matter who is there like human or God. I can't control myself. I don't want to visualise it but I can't. This visualisation is like my bad habit. It doesn't mean that I am a sex addict. Is this better through hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is better in my case? So what can I do. Please give me a better suggestion.

Hey lybrate-user. I can empathize with you. See as per your description these appear to be obsessions in the form of images which are intrusive, repetitive and you are not liking it. Right. Although you didn't tell me the ways you try to control them if you do. So the treatment for anxiety disorders like OCD are Medications and therapy like CBT.
