Please suggest a health checkup plan to ascertain whether a person is having cancer or not.

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Oncologist, Delhi
There is no single test to completely eliminate the risk of cancer. However there are a few tests which depending on the patient profile, may be used suitably to detect common cancers early, so that they can be treated more effectively. There is no universal solution and varies from person to person.

Dear mam, cervical cancer vaccine is against two strains of hpv viruses responsible for maximum number of cervical cancers ie. Hpv type 16 and 18. It is not a hormonal preparation and there is absolutely no risk of infertility. How ever as any drug has some side effects it may cause local area of inflammation where the shot given, nausea, joint pain or flu like symptoms and they are usually self limiting and do not pose any serious problem.

I'm a single working girl living in Delhi from last 4 years. My breasts are lumpy in nature. Presently I'm on medication, taking treatment of hormonal imbalance. It's been (just) 3 months of the treatment. I've had (sometimes) irregular cycle of my periods, & during those days pain is almost excruciating. From last 6 months I've had a strange problem of having pain in my breasts. Upon (even little) stimulation, I can feel the tingling sensation & afterwards pain. Now lumps are more clear, so clear that I can feel them now & upon touching them pressingly, it hurts, also in one breast (my right one) I feel more pain. Earlier it wasn't like this. I've done the relevant tests done & the reports of those tests (Serum Prolactin, USG breasts & abdomen, TSH, Urine culture & Blood culture) are okay (if not normal) so to speak. Doctor has said it's the issue of hormonal imbalance which is causing this problem of pain in the breasts, lumpiness of the breast & (sometimes) irregular periods. But I'm afraid. I feel fearful of some major physical ailments which might be causing such conditions. I'm so afraid that these days I'm continuously thinking about it. I want to know what can be cause of - pain in the breasts, lumpiness of the breast & (sometimes) irregular periods. & how it can be taken care of? Please provide correct and relevant information.

FMAS, MS
General Surgeon, Gandhinagar
Respected lybrate-user hi sorry to hear about your problem. I think this is in relation to your stress & anxiety that is leading to hormonal imbalances. I would strongly suggest to regularise your working hours have enough rest & do concentration through yoga 30 min daily along with your medications that will definately help u. Any further queries & problems welcome to consult anytime dear thanks regards.

I have recently successfully treated for lever lymphoma. Can you please suggest any medicine for avoiding recurring this disease. Solomon.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir lymphomas need chemotherapy depending on histopathology and immunohistochemistry and have to be on regular follow up. They may need bone marrow transplant if relapsed disease on follow up. There is no medicines for prevention.

My question for all doctors what's region of blood cancers? And what's treatment of blood cancers. Because my small bro have blood cancer.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
There is no specific cause of blood cancer it could be due to genetic factors, exposure to radiation, or some other environment factors but nothing is very specific. It is treated by chemotherapy for prolonged period. Good luck to your brother now a days complete remission is possible with complete treatment.

Brava and differential fat grafting should be a good option giving you long lasting results with multiple benefits. A little time taking but worth it.

My sister is 21 year old. She had a tumour near her private part, 3 week before and get operated. Even before the wounds suffered due to operation get heeled, another tumour started to grow near the same place. Please suggest me the best solution or better place to get treated. She is suffering more with the pain and bedridden for past 3 week. Kindly help me.

She must be having a cyst or a wart. With proper treatment and follow up she will be cured. No need to worry and certainly no reason to be bedridden.

Hello my mother 45 years has stage 3b small cell carcinoma cervix and has been injected with cisplatin n etoposide in first line after 6 cycles which there was 100% response after which she went through internal and external radio therapy. Not 2 months later the cancer reoccurred. After which she received good dose of pacitaxel and ireantecon on 1st and 8th day in her second line which proved out to be ineffective and the disease progressed. Now currently she is having her 3rd line with gemcitabine and another drug (don't know it's name) which aren't looking good either. There is a new lymph node visible on her throat which is getting bigger. I want to know if there is anything we can do about this type of cancer? Any experimental drugs which are proving to be effective? Or what else can we do for that cist on her throat. Or what other drugs can help our case. Thank you.

It's unlikely for a small cell carcinoma of the cervix to reach the throat. It would be a good idea to do a PETCT scan to assess the extent of the disease. Small cell tumours are very aggressive and difficult to treat. If the disease is localised on petct, then surgery can be attempted.

I have listened that falling of hair is one of the symptom of cancer. Is it really the only symptom by which we can regonize it? What are the early symptoms or starting symptoms for recognizing cancer?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Falling of hair is not the symptom of cancer. It can be caused by some chemotherapy drugs, which is also temporary. Cancer can present as lump, ulceration, abnormal bleeding from anywhere, weight loss, abnormal bleeding or periods etc it depends on area effected. As a female you should go for monthly self breast examination five days after the periods are over and be aware of any abnormal symptoms which is not going after routine medication then you must consult your doctor.
