Persistent Stiffness in Joints - Can it be a Sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune chronic disorder that might cause abnormal swelling in the joints when the joint tissues are attacked by the human immune system. The more frequently used body joints, such as the knees, fingers, shoulders, wrists, elbows and hips commonly get affected by the disease. Rheumatoid arthritis can also occur in the ligaments or tendons and might affect areas such as the kidney, bone marrow, eyes, lungs, and heart.

If rheumatoid arthritis is not diagnosed on time, it might lead to future complications, such as blood cancer in the lymph regions, osteoporosis (a medical condition resulting in the weakness of the bones), infections, stiffening of the arteries and dry mouth.

What exactly causes the disease is not known, but a significant damage to the immune system might cause the inflammation of the joints, resulting in this condition. Obesity, a family history of this condition and other lifestyle habits such as smoking tobacco put one at higher risks of this disorder.

The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis might vary among people. The most common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are;
1. Severe pain in the morning
2. Episodes of mild fever with severe pain
3. Redness and inflammation of the joints which might cause intense pain
4. Stiffness in the joints
5. The pain might increase in low-temperature conditions
6. Acute lethargy and weight loss

Treatments
The treatment of rheumatoid arthritis includes a prescribed dosage (depending on the intensity of the condition) of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, anti-rheumatoid drugs such as methotrexate and steroid drugs such as prednisone to reduce the swelling and the subsequent pain. Performing regular exercises in order to retain the flexibility of the joints with appropriate consultation from the physiotherapist might cure rheumatoid arthritis.

Actually there is no description as muscle pains, I think you have multiple joint pains as the main problem. I want to know your detailed clinical history, your relevant investigations, your treatment records till now. It helps me to better understand your condition and prescribe accordingly. Please also mention your co-morbid conditions and drug allergy. I will advise you to get some basic blood tests done empty stomach and get back to me with results: cbc, esr, crp, serum electrolytes and serum vitamin d levels. Hello lybrate user, - look at the cause for your pain as you mentioned long time it's better to go for investigation like x-ray back bone, though your age is not a suggestive of degenerative changes - it's all lifestyle dependent issues, better to adopt good lifestyle - maintain posture while sitting studying sleeping - if you are in any sports that also counts here (need to know) - apply ksheerabala taila with sahacharadi taila and do hot fomentation for 15 min for 10 days, no oral medications are required if there is no degenerative changes

My wife of age 42 has undergone a severe back pain at lumbar side. The pain is in between L4-L5. The MRI shows that there is a stenosis in L4-L5. She is advised to do surgery, but we are not willing to do surgery. She is exercising every day regularly for the same. The pain is in right leg to sciatica nerve. Prescription- do hamstring (thigh), calf stretching for sciatic pain. For back pain put hot water bottel on affected area of back. Take towel roll and put it under the back curve, then push the towel roll and hold it 10 seconds. Do this cycle 15 times twice a day. Avoid long sitting, and right side lying. Go to your near physiotherapy clinic for lumbar traction.

Dear I think we need more information to understand the cause of pain. Maybe you have shin splint which is a common sports injury and acl rupture is coincidental.

Weight reduction, back bending extension exercises and avoiding forward bending without lifting heavy weights can reduce the severity or even banish the pain. Sleep on a thin non spongy mattress. Traction to the lumbosacral spine may help a lot.

Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang asana? lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.
