How Can You Safeguard Your Hearing?

How Can You Safeguard Your Hearing?

Your hearing is one of the most important function your body carries out and sometimes you realize that you are losing your sense of hearing, when it is too late to get it back. There are two main reasons for this. One of the reason is age and the other is when the inner ear's hair cells break down and do not pick up sound well.

Here are 7 ways to safeguard your hearing:

  1. Try to avoid loud places: It is not advisable to go to places where you have to shout to be heard, such as in a street, a concert or a construction site.
  2. Buy low noise rating equipment: The equipments in your house will make sound that you hear the most. Try to avoid these equipments by buying appliances with a low noise rating.
  3. Wear hearing protection at loud places: However, it is true that it is not always possible to avoid loud noises. This is when you need to get hearing protection. Earplugs and earmuffs are two of the best ways to make sure that even when you are in a loud place, your hearing does not get affected. Earplugs and earmuffs generally reduce sound by 15 to 30 decibels, which may be crucial to make sure that later in your life, you do not lose your hearing.
  4. Avoid smokeSmoking raises your chance of hearing loss. Second hand smoke does the same thing. Therefore, try to avoid, both smoking and secondhand smoking.
  5. Remove earwax properly: Earwax cannot be removed properly using a cotton swab. Instead, you should use an irrigation kit. Remember this as otherwise; the earwax could muffle your hearing.
  6. Avoid medications which reduce hearing: Certain medications increase hearing loss. Therefore, double check with your doctor to make sure your medicines will not make you lose your hearing.
  7. Get your hearing tested: Finally, get your hearing tested as identifying the problem early on can help stop worsen the situation.

Audiology And Audiologists - All You Need To Know About Them!

What is audiology?

Audiology is the branch of science which studies disorders related to hearing and balance. Practitioners of audiology are known as audiologists. Audiologists employ various testing strategies to determine the problems that a person is facing and what the reason is for the problem. Audiology also determines if a person can hear within the normal hearing range or not. If he/she is not able to listen then they determine exactly which portion of the hearing mechanism is affected.

Audiology is a vast field with a lot of different elements. Audiologists not only test the hearing of people but they also work in rehabilitating individuals. People who have had hearing problems can get rehabilitated by audiologists. So, now that you have a brief idea about Audiology, we will be discussing its history.

History of Audiology:

No one knows exactly who coined the term ‘Audiology’. The terms ‘Audiology’ and ‘Audiologist’ have been traced back to 1946 when it first appeared in different medical publications. Robert Galambos has credited Hallowell Davis as the person who has coined the term in the 1940s.

Audiology emerged as a separate field after the Second World War as a huge number of veterans were suffering from hearing loss. This created a need for audiologists and the demand for audiologists ultimately created the field of audiology. Since then Audiology and it's different components are treated as important as other medical fields.

Thousands of people every year suffer from various disorders and other audio related issues which make it really important and popular.

What Audiologists Take Care Of?

A healthcare professional who specialises in diagnosing, identifying, treating and monitoring disorders related to the vestibular and auditory systems of the ear is known as an Audiologist. Audiologists are trained to treat people who are suffering from hearing problems or total loss of hearing. Other problems related to hearing and the ear are also treated by audiologists.

Infants who suffer from hearing loss along with their families are also counselled by audiologists. Audiologists are trained professionals and they have training in hearing aids, electrophysiology, cochlear implants, etc. Audiologists conduct hearing exams and they also fit, adjust and maintain hearing aids.

Another key treatment that audiologists do is treating balance disorders. They are also specialised in treating tinnitus as well. Speech rehabilitation is also done by audiologists.

Labyrinthitis - All You Need To Know About It!

Labyrinthitis is a very common disease related to audiology in which the person suffers from an inner ear medical disorder. The two vestibular nerves present inside the inner portion of the ears send information to the brain about spatial navigation and also balance control. Now, when any of these two nerves become inflamed due to some reason, it causes Labyrinthitis.

The symptoms of this disorder are easily identifiable and the person is treated generally based on the kind of symptoms he or she is experiencing.

Symptoms:

Even though the symptoms may disappear after a few days, a chronic Labyrinthitis will continue to affect after that as well.

  • Dizziness can be experienced throughout the day
  • Vertigo or fear of heights can affect the person.
  • Loss of balance because of the inflammation.
  • Nausea and vomiting due to dizziness.
  • Tinnitus or a ringing sensation in the ears.

These are the symptoms Labyrinthitis and sometimes if these are not treated well, then it can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Causes

  • Illnesses like bronchitis can cause Labyrinthitis.
  • Different viral infections affecting the inner ear
  • Infection or virus attack in the stomach
  • Herpes caused by Human alphaherpesvirus
  • Bacterial middle ear infections

So if you are suffering from any of these medical problems then you must visit an audiologist immediately and treat the condition in a proper manner.

Diagnosis And Treatment

The doctor will conduct different physical examination and other tests which will help him or her to detect the real problem. Hearing tests, blood tests, a CT or MRI scan of the head and even electroencephalogram can be used to diagnose the patient. Once the real cause of the disease gets traced, the doctor will prescribe medication accordingly.

Here are some of the best treatment of this disease:

  • Antihistamines, such as desloratadine or Clarinex will be prescribed.
  • Medications which will effectively reduce dizziness and nausea are also given to get relief from the most common symptoms.
  • Sedatives, such as diazepam if the patient is unable to sleep properly.
  • Easily available antihistamines like fexofenadine (Allegra), diphenhydramine (Benadryl), or loratadine (Claritin).

Apart from treating yourself with different medication here are some important actions you can perform to get relief from symptoms which might affect you:

  • Avoid rapid or quick changes in position and postures.
  • Sit very still and don't move during a vertigo attack.
  • Get up clamly and steadily from a lying down or seated position instead of a sudden movement.
  • Avoid bright television, computer screens, and flashing lights during a potential vertigo attack.

So, here are the different information which you must know about Labyrinthitis and we hope this article will help you to get the best treatment and recovery.

It's normal Non-Fluency. Do not ask him to correct else he is going to be more conscious about his speech. Keep monitoring but don't let the child to know about it. Good luck.

I have problem regarding ears since birth. I can hear sound but do not understand it. What should I do?

I have problem regarding ears since birth. I can hear sound but do not understand it. What should I do?
This must be due to hearing loss at some frequencies. Many patients face this difficulty where they hear few sounds out of whole sound spectrum. For example if someone can hear "m" sound (low pitch sound) but can't hear "s" sound (High pitch sound), Now the word "some" with sound as "amm" so you heard but did not understand. Please get yourself tested by a qualified audiologist and go as per his advice.

My father have moderate to severe hearing loss. Which one should be a good hearing aid for him. Age 65 years Budget 60 thousand for both the hearing aids what's daily FA power is a good option.

Hello, I suggest you to focus on the benefit of the Hearing aid over budget. You might get a good Hearing aid in lesser amount which may suit your father or may be little expensive over your budget. So please look for the benefit form hearing aids. Hearing aids do not just amplify sounds but also maintains your hearing health. Point to be considered: - must do Free Field Audiometry test before and after hearing aid fittings so you can be sure that your father can hear all speech sounds correctly. This requires a two-room testing sound proof set-up but test is not expensive. - If the hearing aids covers hearing loss completely. - Hearing aids are your health devices so please see a Qualified Audiologist only. Do not allow quacks to play with your health. Look/Ask for the qualification. - You must take hearing aids for home trial before you purchase it. Few of the Popular and Good brands are: Unitron, Phonak, Signia, Widex Good luck.

You have to religiously follow the instructions of your therapist. Few tips: - Deep inhale before you initiate speaking. - Never be conscious how are you speaking - Be confident on the what your speaker. - Keep calm and relaxed - Speak in a reduced speed (not loudness) but the rate for your speech. Good luck.

How Can You Regain Your Hearing With Hearing Aids?

How Can You Regain Your Hearing With Hearing Aids?

Loss or impairment of hearing can happen due to a variety of causes and may be temporary or permanent in nature, depending on the type and severity of the condition. One of the most common causes of hearing impairment is age. The degeneration of one's vital organs and senses becomes a reality for many people as the advancement of age happens, and the delicate insides of the ears are no different. Noise pollution, injury to the ear drum or any other part of the ear, as well as the movement of particles inside are only a few of the many reasons for loss of hearing. One of the many ways of dealing with long term hearing impairment is by using a hearing aid.

Read on to know how you can regain your hearing with hearing aids:

  1. Long Forgotten Sound: A hearing aid will help you reacquaint yourself with long forgotten and subtle sounds that you may not have been able to hear for a long time. Many times, this kind of impairment also makes us forget to notice the fact that we do not hear so many normal sounds in our everyday lives - sounds that we probably did not notice even earlier. This may include the whirring of a fan, the whoosh of the air, the pitter patter of pets' feet and so much more. A hearing aid will help in bringing about an adjustment to these sounds that you will actually end up discovering again.
  2. Technicalities: The hearing aid basically works by letting your hearing and ears readjust to the various volumes, intensity and vibrations that one feels when different sounds reach the ears. This helps in hearing better.
  3. Amplification: A hearing aid is basically an electroacoustic device that fits in neatly behind your ear where it is tucked away from plain sight. This device helps in amplifying sounds so that you can catch them and hear them more clearly.
  4. Modulation: The ENT specialist will usually prescribe a certain kind of hearing aid based on your individual condition in terms of volume, size, power and circulation. These factors help in modulating the sounds in a certain way so that they reach the nerve pathways from the inner ear and travel to the brain in a proper and effective way. This is usually done in a customised way to cater to the specific type and cause of your hearing loss.

Using a hearing aid is a matter of retraining your hearing rather than restoring it completely. These aids will be helpful in regaining a better sense of hearing within the condition you are going through, rather than reversing the condition completely.
