Causes and Symptoms of Shoulder Pain

Causes and Symptoms of Shoulder Pain

Your shoulder is one of the most overused joints in the body and thus is at a higher risk of contracting an injury. Shoulder pain may lead to mobility issues where moving your arms may become extremely difficult. The shoulder consists of three parts, viz. the shoulder blade, collarbone and the upper arm bone. Shoulder pain may result from an injury to any of these areas.

The various causes of shoulder pain are:

  1. Impingement: Impingement of the shoulder muscle occurs when the top of the shoulder impinges on the rotator cuff muscles. This condition can lead to severe pain in the shoulder.
  2. Bursitis: Bursa is a fluid filled sac that cushions the bones and help in preventing friction. Bursitis is a disorder that results in inflammation of the bursa, thus resulting in shoulder pain.
  3. Tendinitis: Tendinitis is a condition that is characterized by gradual wear and tear of the tendon. Usually the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder are affected by this condition.
  4. Instability of the shoulder: Shoulder instability is a disorder of the shoulder wherein the upper arm bone dislocates from its socket. This can cause excessive pain in the shoulder.
  5. Fractures: A fracture in the bones of the shoulder results in excruciating shoulder pain.
  6. Arthritis: Arthritis is a disorder that leads to inflammation in the joints, thus resulting in pain and impaired movement of the joint.

Treatment: The treatment for shoulder pain consists of medications and physiotherapy. You may also be asked to discontinue any strenuous activity that requires shoulder movement. Medications such as NSAIDs are prescribed to help in controlling the pain. Various stretches of the shoulder are also recommended to improve shoulder flexibility and mobility.

Tips: Do exercises such as the overhead press with light weights to improve your shoulder strength. Also make sure to include certain external rotation exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles.

This is sign of early arthritis. Avoid spicy citric and oily food drink more water, eat roughage food. Walk, pranayam and proper exercise will also help in this.

Which treatment is effective among allopathy, homeopathy and ayurveda for rheumatoid arthritis?

DM - Rheumatology, MD - General Medicine
Rheumatologist, Mumbai
Which treatment is effective among allopathy, homeopathy and ayurveda for rheumatoid arthritis?
Allopathy is best for many reasons. Ayurveda and homeopathy have no new drugs designed to treat RA. Everything is age old. RA can lead to joint destruction which is irreversible if not controlled well at start. Early treatment is the key in RA. There is ‘window of opportunity’ in early RA (not our invention, but a recognised term :). This window is open for 12-24 weeks after RA starts. There is decent evidence that if RA patients are properly treated during this window, they are less likely to have joint damage or might need much lesser treatment in the future. Many patients miss this window for a ‘unproven’ natural treatment. Most claims of successful natural therapies on internet or real-life are fake or misguided. Many patients with mild disease at start will feel better with anything, but they will worsen without proper treatment in future. There is almost no government or medical organisation in the world, which endorses use of natural therapies exclusively for RA treatment. Yes, they might recommend healthy diet, exercise, herbs, acupuncture etc, but just as add-on to allopathic treatment. A research on any drug should be good quality and repeatedly show similar results. At any point an approved RA allopathy drug will have anything ranging from 50 to more than 100 papers. No natural / ayurveda / homeopathy therapy used in RA has consistently shown such results. You can also visit arthritis and Rheumatology (arthritisrheumindia dot com) india website for more information. Best wishes.

After fusion also, its not confirmed to have 100% relief in pain. I will suggest you to do strengthening exercises and take proper physiotherapy for some time, if problem doesnt cure than u can opt for surgery, because this is the last u can do. Else post op exercises need to be followed.
