Suffering From Joint Pain - Things You Must Do!

The various movements of the body are enabled by the way the bones work with each other and allow for various movements. You cannot perform a single movement without the coordination of the various joints and bones. It is also for the same reason that joint pains are so common. Accidents, sports injuries, play area injuries, and general ageing are some of the causes that can result in joint pains. There are definitely ways to treat them, but at the same time, preventing them also can be helpful. Read on to know some of the ways to prevent and manage joint pains.

Precautionary measure: For children, ensure they are playing under the supervision of an adult and are wearing sufficient protective gear in the form of helmets, wrist/elbow guards, etc. The same goes for athletes who are prone to injuries. It is always prudent to know your physical limits and not stretch your body constantly. This will go a long way in reducing injuries. Always keep a first-aid kit in your sports bag so that you can manage the pain at the earliest.

If prevention does not work, and injuries do happen, some of the ways to manage them are outlined below.

  1. Cryotherapy/ice therapy: By reducing the blood flow to the affected joint, ice helps in reducing the pain and swelling, which are usually the prominent symptoms of any joint injury. Using an ice pack for 15 to 20 minutes every hour is greatly useful in reducing the pain. This can be continued for the next few days until the pain stops. Avoid ice burns by not applying ice directly on the skin; instead, wrap it in a towel or a soft cotton cloth.
  2. Oil massages: Natural oils can be used to massage the affected joints which also greatly reduce pain. Oils which contain menthol or give a topical soothing effect are highly recommended. If you are unable to do it at home, seek professional help for the same.
  3. Hydrotherapy: Warm baths with salts added for extra benefit can provide soothing relief from joint pains. Try these before going to bed to also get good sleep.
  4. Herbal mixes: Tea bags and other herbal mixes can also be used to relieve joint pains. These may work for some and may not work for others. As these are external applications, you can give it a try.
  5. Immobilise the area: The affected joint should be immobilised completely or partially, depending on the extent of damage.
  6. Physiotherapy: While initially the joint needs to be rested, getting into a physical exercise routine with inputs from a physiotherapist is very essential to avoid long-term immobility.
  7. Medications: Non-steroidal pain killers are another proven method to manage joint pains.

Dear sir, I am 24 years old, I am suffering from knee pain. As whenever I sit for a long time, then to lift up my leg it is very painful.

Pain in back when sitting in the chair and when lie in the bed and sleeping time this pain is long time.

It looks like you are anaemic. If you have back pain after you sit for long hours then it is due to your haemoglobin levels as it is important to check that. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back / leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. The lower end of the vertebral column is inflamed and that bone is called coccyx bone and the condition is called Coccydynia. The conservative management would be to keep ice in that inflamed area during one time in a day and also to sit in a hot water bowl where the penetration of the heat would help to reduce the inflammation. And to reduce the weight falling on the inflammed surface we suggest patients to use air cushion pillow (also called as doughnut pillow) where in the buttock's weight will not fall exactly on the painful tail bone and that would automatically reduce the pain.

My hand (between wrist &elbow) fractured in 2013 .they attached plates & done surgery. They didn't removed them till now. I'm getting pain some times.(while playing & caring water can etc) wt was the cause for the pain.

I am male 26 I have lower back pain from past 2 months that is if I sit for long time or if I sleep for a long time the pain comes into picture. I heard from someone that this pain comes form the effect of anaesthesia. I had undergone ankle surgery 3 years back while that time they gave me anaesthesia to my backbone. If it isn't a tissue pain what can be the reason of back pain which at a higher end gets even in the front side of hip .I'm having pain in my hip on right side what could be the reason. Pain is irregular only comes sometimes.

I have tremendous pain in both my legs, at same points on both the legs. You can say I have a tremendous overall pain in both my legs. The reason behind it is I had started working out from 13 th of June, where I used to do a half an hour jogging/ walking session in the morning and 1 hour gym session at night. In the morning session I used to jog and walk for 2.75 km, covering the distance in less than half an hour. And at night gym session, apart from upper body exercise, I used to do 10 minutes of treadmill, started with walking and then gradually moved on to running on treadmill, where I could later run a distance of 1.5 km and I also used to do 5 minutes of gym cycling. Before 5 days I had started experiencing unusual pain in my legs which I ignored considering it as workout pain. But as it got a bit immense, I skipped the next day morning jogging session. I applied some pain killer spray. Next day on Saturday when I went for jogging I could hardly jog 500m, which was very less compared to the earlier sessions. So on the Saturday night I contacted my gym trainer, he asked me to take some rest till Monday and start the legs workout from Tuesday. But still I'm having tremendous pain in both my legs making me very difficult to walk and even stand at a place for 5 minutes. What do I do please suggest!

Pls correct your nutrition, drink 3-4 litres of water, take foods rich in calcium like banana, milk,have paneer and yogurt, just hope you dnt have stress fractures, eat protein rich foods, if veg have whey proteins post wrkout.

I have slight pain in my left back side under rib please help me. Stools goes easily but half bowel.

I think my foot (both legs) is weak as whenever I walk too much or exercise they start paining and the pain is more specific to the heel area. What should I do to make them stronger?

You should wear proper footwear (sports shoes) while excessive walking. And start to wear soft spongy sleepers even in your home. Sometime if your foot is flat foot means no arch or less arch then it must pain in exertion, so observe your foot if it is flat foot then you can to occupational therapist so he can make arch or pad that ll be beneficial for you in weight bearing position. And do hot water formentation for that take a bucket full of water and immerse your foot into it till ankle level ,do it twice in a day for 10 mins .Do Ankle stretching exercises.

I am suffering from back pain last two years my height 5'6" weight 95 I still seat work continues 10 hours daily my my MRI reports normal but I am in stressed from pain lower back also.

While sitting with any support as cushion etc that portion gets pained after removal from such portion I feel relaxed.

I am having pain in my left shoulder. I guess this is due to rotator cuff. I do gyming and whenever I do chest or shoulder exercise this increases a lot of pain in my shoulder.

This is a general low back ache and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try which will help you relax as well will reduce the pain.
