Cold and Cough in Children - Precautions that Parents Must Take

Cold and Cough in Children - Precautions that Parents Must Take

Cold and cough is caused by a viral infection, which can last for about two to four weeks. The symptoms include stuffy or a runny nose, coughing and sore throat. Many times, the infection may raise body temperature and the child may suffer from fever. Our body’s immune system naturally fights with such infections. Depending on the type of cough and the symptoms, the virus can stay active in the body for about 4 to 6 weeks. It is quite painful to see the child suffering from cold and cough. The symptoms of this infection are worse during the first two days.

The child will experience pain and irritation in the throat with difficulty in swallowing, frequent coughing with mucous, breathing difficulty and high fever. Most parents rush to over the counter drugs for cold and cough to ease of their child’s agony. However, most drugs/ cough syrups available over the counter only provide temporary relief. Medical evidence suggests that antibiotics do not kill viruses, thus, it is not advisable to treat cold and cough with antibiotics unless accompanied by another infection. So, what do parents do? Well, there is a lot that can be done.

Let’s first understand the type of a cough your child might be suffering from:

  1. Dry cough: Generally occurs due to infection in upper respiratory tract, cold or influenza. Children with asthma and allergies are also prone to this type of cough as dry cough is triggered by smoke or dust.
  2. Croup Cough: A harsh barking and dry cough with swelling beneath vocal cords.
  3. Wet Cough: Most commonly caused by cold. This is an infection of the lower respiratory tract characterised by mucous secretions.
  4. Whooping cough: Characterised by fast coughing, breathing difficulties and a whooping sound while breathing.

Apart from this, If coughing starts suddenly along with choking, the child may have inhaled a foreign body. Immediate help may be required. For babies less than 12 months of age, cold cough followed by breathing difficulties may indicate bronchiolitis and require a paediatric attention. A normal cold and cough generally subside with two to four weeks. However, it is important to understand when to consult a doctor.

  • Chest pain or breathing problems
  • Cough lasting for more than 6 weeks.
  • A yellow, green or brown mucous indicating another infection.
  • Swollen glands, persistent high fever, rashes.
  • Body getting pale and symptoms getting worse.
  • Temperature higher than 38 degrees in the case of infants.

Precautions and diet that should be taken care of

  • Increase Intake of fluids especially hot liquids
  • Never stop breastfeeding the baby
  • Vapour rub applied on chest and back is an effective remedy
  • Inhaling steam provides relief to a sore throat and nose
  • Intake of crushed tulsi leaves with honey or hot turmeric milk is soothing and very helpful

There is little we can do to prevent viral infections. However, proper care and caution can ensure a smooth recovery.

My son is 4.5 years got stomach infection after consuming mango shake around 20 days ago. He had stomach ache and loose motion off and on. After eating something he had stomach ache and loose motion. For last two days he had watery loose motion. Today motion are better but he is having fever above 101. I am giving crocin for fever every 6 hrs and ciffixim for motion.

My daughter is 6 years. She is becoming arrogant and restless. If some horror picture she observed confirm she will vomit in night during sleep. We (myself, my wife and my only daughter) a flat in kolkata. Our parents live in native. She like swimming but couldn't try to swim without boat.

MD - Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Gurgaon
Don't panic please she is just 6yrs. Few points? she requires love, affection & understanding from her parents? parents should not be scolding the child, due to which child can become fearful? accept the child & then empower? no activities which can make child restless like parents fighting with each other, parents themselves worrying a lot, tv shows and movies of such type? telling & teaching something while child is on bed at bedtime which can make the child calm & peaceful & confident? children do what they observe compared to what we teach. Very long discussion.

I have a 16 day old baby boy who is only on breastmilk. His poop is normal mustard yellow when he poops. When it dries in the cloth nappy it turns green! is this normal? or should I take him to my pediatrics?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Breastfed babies usually pass 6 to 8 times, small quantities of semisolid golden yellow coloured stools. Color is not an issue as long as baby is otherwise fin.

How can we increase the weight of 7 days old baby boy at the time of delivery he is 2.5 kg but due to some fever and jaundice his weight reduced to 2 kg then how will we increase his weight.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Wait, breast-feeding will regain and start putting on weight. If treating pediatrician is confident, you need not worry. All babies lose weight initially, though your child seems to have lost more weight than expected. Follow your pediatrician, don't worry.

Ent specialist or pediatrician, both r equally competent to treat. U may consult any one. If any intervention is required, ent specialist can do it. For passing stool problem, give her fibrous food good quantity of water. Gud (गुड़) in stead of refined sugar may be helpful. Train her for toileting habit.

From your description, it looks like your baby is suffering from infection of eye, possibly Conjunctivitis. Before it becomes worse or spreads to the other eye, it is better to take the baby to a Paediatrician and get proper advice.

Don?t put your child to bed with a bottle, as the liquid can pool in the mouth while the child sleeps and cause decay.

Using baby soaps by adults is advisable or not in order to maintain a soft and bright skin.

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics

There is no standard guidelines for use of baby soap in adults. Baby soaps are having less chemicals to protect babies. They will not maintain soft and bright skin. Use of moisteriser and sunsreen may help you to maintain soft and bright skin.

If it is simple cold n cough without involvement of lung i.e. URTI, for last 5 days, now there is no role of antibiotics. I think she is having blocked nose. Some time salbutamol makes the condition worst. I repeat if there is no involvement of lung infection n baby taking feed near to normal, stop all medicine just instill saline nasal drops in each nostril 3-4 times in a day and give her sips of lukewarm water now n then. Otherwise continue tt as advised by your doctor.

Hi lybtrate user, even if you are not getting milk that's ok. You can start the baby with semisolid food and slowly you can give her solid food.

My baby girl is 10 month old and suffering from cough can I give her ascoril ls drops.

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics

Avoid using any cough syrup without doctor advice because dosage of any drug may be different for different weight and symptoms. You can best use steam inhalation for your child at home. Protect your child from cold.

My 6 month old baby seems to be irritated most of the time. He makes screeching noises and cries a lot. He's been suffering from cold since last 3-4 days but his behavior has been like this from past 10 days or so. Also, he is facing difficulties in sleeping during the night. Wakes up every hour and starts crying. We are unable to understand that whether he is hungry most of the time or can something else be the reason for his irritable behavior.

He may be hungry. If weaning has not been yet started, do it now, He may not be liking milk all the time. Due to cold, his nostrils may be blocked which disturbed his sleep. Instill in each nostril 1 to 2 drops of Saline Nasal drops 3 to 4 times in a day. If it doesn't work, consult pediatrician.
