Delayed Speech - Causes And Symptoms!

Delayed Speech - Causes And Symptoms!

It might happen that you may not find your child, at twelve months to two years of age, at the same level as their peers in verbal communication. You think it's just a developmental problem they are facing and put off seeking professional advice; an intrinsically wrong step to take, because your child might be suffering from Speech Delay.

Delayed speech, or alalia, can be roughly defined as a delay in the development and use of the biological mechanisms that produce speech. Delayed speech is sometimes caused from hearing defect also. A deaf child is always dumb. Before we jump into conclusion of delayed speech, hearing assessment is mandatory.

The symptoms of speech delay are roughly categorized into age related groups, generally beginning at the age of 12 months and continuing through the early adolescence, and they are:

1. Age-12 months
a. It is indeed a symptom if your child cannot point at objects or cannot manage gestures, such as waving good-bye.
b. Another symptom is that if your child does not prefer to communicate verbally as much as his/her peers.

2. Age-15-18 months
a. If your child is unable to pronounce familiar syllables or simply cannot call you even by this time, it's a worrying symptom.
b. You find your child unable to, or simply not reciprocating to 'no', 'hello', 'hi', 'bye'.
c. If your child is unable to extend his/her vocabulary up to 15 words by fifteen months, then it's a symptom.

3. Age-2-4 years
a. You find your child unable to spontaneously produce speech and words.
b. Another worrying symptom is if your child is lacking consonant sounds at the beginning and end of words while speaking.
c. If you still find your child unable to form simple sentences and words, then it is indeed a troubling symptom, confirming the disorder.

The causes for the speech delay disorder are:
1. A primary cause can be physical disruption in parts of the mouth such lips or palate, which may be deformed.
2. Another serious cause can be an oral-motor dysfunction which is the disruption in the creation of the specific area of the brain which deals with speech and communication.
3. The disorder can also be attributed to impairment in the development of the child's intellectual, receptive and expressive abilities.
4. There can also be psychological causes involving school environment and peer relationships which might lead to disruption of speech patterns and reluctance in speech expression and development. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pediatrician.

I'm a 14 year old female who was diagnosed with Otosclerosis. If I have mild hearing loss in my left ear how long do you think it will take for me to go completely deaf in one ear? And also a stapedectomy was recommend as a surgical treatment if I wanted it by my ENT specialist. She told me that it.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear Lybrate User....before Stapedectomy you can try Homoepathic THIOSINAMAN 200, 5 drops in a cup of water early morning before brushing your teeth along with Homoeopathic FERRUM PIC 6X tablets, 4 tablets, thrice daily for at least 1 month....this combination has effectively increased the level of hearing in some cases of deafness due to otosclerosis in my experience

He look thin, always while walking he is not stable as if he is not balancing. Or his legs are weak. I have been feeding almost every thing which I come to know is healthy. But still his health not recovering. Please help me out. How can make my son health?

Parents, out of love, give to child what they think is best for their kid's health but never care to know what kid wants. Your kid is 16 months. He has his own choice. Give him home made every thing he wants. Avoid sugar rich drinks, chocolates or like. To rule out any illness, consult pediatrician.

Please give two to three meals a day. Rest breastfeeding. Difference between the two feed may be three hours. One meal may be one to two fist size. Means bachelor ki ek ya do mutthi barabar. Food is ok. Please check if the breast milk is adequate or not. You may require top feed with katori and spoon immediately after the breast feeding every time

When to start food for my 6months daughter and should I feed her other than milk?

DM - Neonatology
Pediatrician, Delhi
At the end of 6 months. Start weaning first with soft semisolid foods like suji ka halwa, bananas, mashed potatoes, slowly in a few weeks add more solid. At the end of 1 year, your child should take 3 big katories of meals, and 2-3 snacks in between. You can also start top milk (cow's milk) over and above breast feeds. Breast feeding should be continued till 2 years.

You. Have given very true story of most of six months children. They are getting addicted to sucking at breast. This mostly happens when mother give frequent breast in night time. In lay man term you call it ziddi. To avoid it, you have to have patience, gradualy child have to recognise the impotance that eating food is better and fills the tummy rather than sucking empty breast.

I am giving semi solid food to my 6 months baby. And we are using plastic spoon for it. So do we need to sterilized every time?

It is important to clean the spoon well with a good detergent every time before use. There is no need to sterilise it. It is necessary to wash your hands nicely before every feed.

How to care new born 3 months baby what food have to take for mother what all vaccines to be take new born baby.

MD - Paediatrics, FIAP (Neonatology)
Pediatrician, Chandigarh
Newborn care must include care of temperature. Frequency of feeding and urine frequency. A healthy baby consumes milk 10-12 times a day passes urine 6 -8 times a day and has a normal breathing pattern, mother can eat anything. Imp is to breast feed the baby. Vaccinations should be done acc to iap schedule of 2014 available.

Hi, My daughter she is 2 years 5 months. All of sudden she developed this stubbornness and lack of sleep in nights and wanted to go out late night. And if we tell her no she cries screams her guts out. She sleeps every day 3.30am and gets up 2pm. In btw I give her only milk. She never stop crying she cries more then 1 hr till she gets her work down. She not having her food normally she not chewing her food. Always having smashed rice. Anything if I give her she spit it out. I'm going hard times very stressed out. Unable to control her. Please help me.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kendujhar
It seems that her biological clock is reset. Try to get her up in the morning once, so that she sleeps early. It can be difficult but you may try. You should giver her solid or semisolid food to her to eat herself. She must learn to self feed by now and physiologically she can chew and eat solids. Only she has not learned. You got to be very patient and cool with her yourself before she can be calm. Actually at 2 years (some call terrible two), most children are difficult and often throw temper tantrums and become stubborn.
