YOUR NEWBORN WEEK BY WEEK Newborn Finally, your big moment came…and your little baby came out! Here's a glimpse at your newborn's first week of life. 1 Week Old Baby How can such a little thing make such a big noise? Aside from crying, here's what your newborn is up to in his second week of life. 2 Week Old Baby She may be tiny, but your little bundle of joy sure can eat a lot. Feed me, Mommy! 3 Week Old Baby Your baby's not trying to torture you with all that crying -- he's just trying to tell you something. 4 Week Old Baby Are you talking to me? Yes, she is — and your babbling baby wants you to talk back! 5 Week Old Baby Break out the camera (as if you haven't already!) and capture those first real smiles for posterity — or at least to show to Grandma. 6 Week Old Baby Look what my fingers can do! That might be what your baby is cooing to herself as she test-drives those powerful tools attached to her hands. 7 Week Old Baby Smiles and sounds abound as your baby soaks up stimuli and lets you know he loves the world around him. YOUR BABY MONTH BY MONTH 1 Month Old Baby From newborn reflexes and sleep to things to do with baby, what you need to prepare for the first month. 2 Month Old Baby You might be pretty (ok, very) tired these days but one look at that little gummy grin makes it all worthwhile. 3 Month Old Baby So much has happened in so little time! Your baby has gotten a whole lot bigger and his brain power is increasing every day, too! 4 Month Old Baby Plenty of parents consider the next few months to be the golden age of babyhood, and for good reason. 5 Month Old Baby Peek-a-boo, I see you! Get ready to play this classic and other hide-and-seek games as your baby starts to catch on to the fun. 6 Month Old Baby Your baby is halfway to a year already! Watch for skills (and the desire to use them) to grow by leaps and bounds now. 7 Month Old Baby I like that song, mommy! Sing it again…and again…and again… 8 Month Old Baby At this age, those little critters are itching to bust a move so set'em down and watch'em go! 9 Month Old Baby If it seems like some of your baby's adorable sounds are starting to sound like actual words, they are! 10 Month Old Baby With so much ground to cover, your energizer bunny is probably more interested in exploring than eating these days. 11 Month Old Baby If there's trouble to be found, chances are your little one is on the hunt!

I have given painless pentaxim vaccine once to my 2 month baby boy after that I have given him painful pentavac vaccine. Will there be any reaction by changing the vaccines? Is it safe?

I have given painless pentaxim vaccine once to my 2 month baby boy after that I have given him painful pentavac vacci...
Currently Pentaxim vaccine is not recommended by INDIAN ACADEMICS OF PEDIATRICS below 1 year or in primary series of 6 10 and 14 week schedule. As it contains acellular pertusis as one of the components its painless and feverless but its not as effective as pentavac because it conta wholecell pertusis which is efficacious in long term. If your child have any reaction from Pentavac then only it wise to shift from Pentavac to Pentaxim. Try to take all pentavac if possible.

My sister's baby is one weeks old and she cant breast feed the baby as nipple is getting injured. Can I give my breast milk to little baby? my baby is one yr old.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Nipples getting injured because of faulty latch. Push the baby's head little closer to breast, so that nipple goes beyond gums of baby, there by putting pressure on areola and resulting good flow of breast milk. Use nipple shield for a while till injury heals. Hope this helps.

Is it normal for young children to stop taking or needing naps? My 3½-year-old hasn’t taken a nap in quite a while, but seems to do OK.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, On average, a 3-4yrs. of child needs 9-12hrs. of night sleep and 0-2hrs. of sleep during daytime (varies from child to child and few kids may not sleep during daytime). Normally, the child sleeps in daytime after doing more physical activity only when the child starts feeling tired and there is need of rest.

My wife had an caesarian procedure on 01.05. 2015. Our baby (daughter) born complete healthy. Dr. Advised my wife to take cerazette 75 daily. My baby is being breastfeed ed by my wife exclusively. Now for the last three days, my baby is vomiting continuously even after taking domostol drop. Child specialist is suggesting, that it may be a side-effect of consuming those contraception pill (cerazette 75m). We do not have any reason to take contraception, as getting pregnant is least of our worries. We are staying separate in these three month for job purpose. So, my question is, can the cerazette tab be harmful to my baby by any means? and if my wife stop that tab on her 15th day, will that be better in any scenario, or it may be harmful to my baby.;

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Cerazette does not influence the production or the quality (protein, lactose, or fat concentrations) of breast milk. However, small amounts of etonogestrel are excreted in the breast milk. As a result, 0.01 - 0.05 microgram etonogestrel per kg body weight per day may be ingested by the child (based on an estimated milk ingestion of 150 ml/kg/day). Limited long-term follow-up data are available on children, whose mothers started using cerazette during the 4th to 8th week post-partum. They were breast-fed for 7 months and followed up to 1.5 years (n=32) or to 2.5 years (n= 14) of age. Evaluation of growth and physical and psychomotor development did not indicate any differences in comparison to nursing infants, whose mother used a copper-iud. Based on the available data cerazette may be used during lactation. The development and growth of a nursing infant, whose mother uses cerazette, should, however, be carefully observed. For your child you give emeset syrup 2.5ml and inform me, privately.

Separation from parents can cause emotional problems in the child. Work out some solution, so that you can take care of child everyday after working hours.(more so if child is demanding).

My 1.8 years old son not eating anything. Only depends on milk. How to feed solids to him.

General Physician,
My 1.8 years old son not eating anything. Only depends on milk. How to feed solids to him.
It's easy, start feeding him solids mixed with milk. Then decrease milk content keeping it semisolid. And he'll grow himself into eating solids. Wish you luck! Do revert if you need any further support.

My son 8 years old had earlier been diagnosed with Phimosis. Our paediatrician advised a cream to applied with which his skin started to retract (fucidin) and it seemed to have worked fine. However, his penis skin got stuck again after sometime which we corrected after applying the cream for sometime again. Now he has been advised to retract his skin regularly however in 1-2 instances his skin developed a cut which was painful to him while urinating. Is there some permanent solution to this problem. We don't want to go for a surgery as one of the leading hospital Doctor advised. Pl advise what is the best solution to this problem. Also to let you know, we came to know of this problem initially because he was facing issues during urinating. He was complaining of frequent urination with only few droplets. Though the problem was largely sorted out after his skin retraction, however he did complain once or twice on urinating issue but not recently.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Once phimosis problem is resolved, it hardly requires any surgery. He is 8 years old. He can understand very well, how to retract foreskin and to keep it in same position for some time. Make retraction regular practice as much time as can be done in a day even before urination after applying cream. Crack in fore skin shall be resolved as soon as fore skin becomes soft. Retract fore skin before urination to avoid urine to touch cracked part. Keep the part clean.

Umbilical cord usually falls off within 10 days. Delayed fall may be because of local infection. If infection is not not there, may require some immunological tests.

I am 25 years old. I am suffering from Respiration problems from 2010. Is there any cure for this problem. I have to take Cipla - Montair LC twice in a day. And sometimes have to take levolin capsule inhaler. I want a cure of this problem.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)
Pediatrician, Aurangabad
according to our science you have to take medication very meticulously and regularly as asthma is not completely curable like diabetes and hypertension. You take not only levolin inhaler but some steroid inhaler as it will prevent latter fibrosis of your lungs.

What is the life span for a baby of 1 year suffering from leukodystrophy, along with other 18q syndrome anomalies?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
What is the life span for a baby of 1 year suffering from leukodystrophy, along with other 18q syndrome anomalies?
Leukodystrophy is not a single condition, but refers to a group of conditions that mainly affect the white (? leuko?) matter of the brain and the spinal cord. The primary leukodystrophies affect myelin production or breakdown. Myelin is the substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibres in the nervous system. When myelin is damaged, the underlying nerve tissue cannot operate in the regular way. Leukodystrophies are usually progressive conditions, which means they get worse over time. They cause loss of normal brain functions. Life expectancy depends on the type of leukodystrophy. Treatment for leukodystrophy currently, leukodystrophies cannot be cured. Stem cell therapy and bone marrow transplantation have each been tried in some cases. However, the benefits depend on the timing, age of onset and severity of symptoms. Therapies such as gene therapy and enzyme replacement therapy are under investigation. Treatment is mainly supportive and may include: physical therapy occupational therapy psychological counselling family counselling (including genetic counselling) medications (for example, medications for seizures. Things to remember leukodystrophy refers to a group of inherited disorders that affect the white matter of the brain. It causes loss of normal brain functions. Onset of symptoms is variable. There is no cure, but supportive treatment can help manage some of the symptoms. Most children with leukodystrophy will have significant problems with walking, talking, and activities of daily living. Some children with leukodystrophy will have a progressive downhill course in their abilities and will have a shortened life span. We encourage you to discuss your child's prognosis with your provider. Because children with leukodystrophy usually have significant medical problems, the impact on the family will be significant. A support group (see below) may be extremely helpful for you and your family. No one can predict the life span. Please ask personally for more doubts.
