Hi, general rules for diet in diabetes are as follow 1. Have small frequent meals. Eating small meals 6 times is better than 3 major meals in a day. Have something in every 3 to 4 hours. For mid morning, mid evening and bed time snack, you can choose between a fruit, a boiled egg, handful of nuts, roasted grams, a glass of milk etc 2. Avoid simple carbohydrates such as maida, refined flour, bakery items, cold drink, sweets, fruit juices etc 3. Have a proper balanced diet with good carbohydrates such as veggies, wheat, ragi, bajra, jowar, oats, unpolished rice etc with protein such as egg, pulses, legumes, sprouts with essential fats such as paneer, tofu, nuts 4. Avoid deep fried snacks, namkeens, anything having excessive oil, ghee, butter etc daily required oil should be limited to 2to 3spoons per day, including all meals 5. Exercise daily for atleast 40 minutes.

Keeping your diabetic condition, fatty liver grade 3, you need to follow a 1700kcal moderate carbohydrate, moderate protein, high fibre, high antioxidant, high omega 3 fatty acid rich diet plan, you can schedule your meal timings from your wake up time, but make sure you are maintaining 2-3 hour intervals and consuming the mentioned foods and portions at the appropriate meals. Do follow it to the maximum for best results. Make flaxseed, drumstick leaves, curry leaves powder and sprinkle 30 gm daily on all the foods you consume throughout the day. Consume lot of leeks and lettuce smoothie which is high in fibre content. Also you can consume raw lady's finger water soaked overnight for your diabetes condition. Substitute multigrains in the place single cereal or millet like rice or wheat or ragi to increase the fibre content in your diet for your fatty liver.

I got a thyroid profile test done in which I got TSH at 41.09 uIU/mL where 1st you stands for mu and it is where much outside of the reference range. What are consequences of the above result.

If left untreated, hypothyroidism can progress and cause a multitude of complications. Understanding the symptoms of hypothyroidism and getting regular screenings to ensure an early diagnosis will prevent the onset of the complications listed below. Birth Defects If you are pregnant and have an untreated thyroid disorder, your child may have a higher risk of having birth defects than babies born to healthy mothers. Babies born to women with untreated thyroid disorders may have significant mental and physical development issues because thyroid hormones are vital for brain development. Fortunately, if these problems are addressed shortly after the birth, the child may experience healthy development. An abbreviated thyroid function test is part of the newborn screen. This usually includes a panel of blood tests performed on a newborn to exclude diseases. Goiter When your thyroid over exerts itself in an effort to produce an adequate amount of hormones, the excessive stimulation may cause the thyroid gland to enlarge to the point where you have a bulge in your neck. This is known as a goiter. Heart Problems Hypothyroidism—even in its mildest forms—can affect the health of your heart. An underactive thyroid can increase your risk of developing heart disease because it increases levels of" bad" cholesterol. Too much bad cholesterol can lead to atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries, which can increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Hypothyroidism can also result in the buildup of fluid around the heart, a pericardial effusion, which may make it harder for the heart to pump blood. Infertility If thyroid hormone levels are too low, it can affect ovulation and decrease a woman's chances of conceiving. Even with proper treatment for hypothyroidism—thyroid hormone replacement therapy—there is no guarantee that the woman will be fully fertile. Mental Health Issues The symptoms of hypothyroidism can take a mental toll if left untreated. Mild hypothyroidism can cause mild forms of depression. But without treatment, the symptoms of hypothyroidism will increase. This can directly affect your mental state, and your depression may intensify as a result. Moreover, untreated hypothyroidism has been associated with a gradual decrease in mental functioning. Myxedema Myxedema is the medical term for extreme hypothyroidism—when the disorder has progressed for a long time with no treatment. Myxedema is very rare because it's highly unlikely that you wouldn't recognize the symptoms and seek treatment. This form of hypothyroidism is life threatening. Myxedema can eventually slow metabolism to the point where you would fall into a coma. If you experience symptoms of myxedema, such as extreme fatigue or cold intolerance, seek medical treatment immediately. The key to preventing the complications of hypothyroidism is to understand the disorder's symptoms and seek proper medical care. Hypothyroidism is manageable with the right treatment—it doesn't have to interfere with your everyday life.

Hello it is good that you have started allopathic treatment again. There is no other treatment than this. Now how are your sugar levels? if in control continue the same. Also check your hba1c it should be below 7. If not then treatment may have to be strengthened. Along with drugs you have to exercise and strive to maintain near normal weigh. Avoid deep fried foods and sweets.

Mr Balmukund, Hypothyroidism is a thyroxine deficiency disorder, hence the treatment is replacement of the hormone through oral tablets. This has to be done for life time as the hormone is needed for day to day normal functioning of our brain and metabolism. Hence this is the only option, There is no permanent cure for it. In addition one has to avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peanuts, radish, mustard and coffee. Plus have to consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Use whole grain flour to make chapati and roti. No refined flour like maida. Daily exercise for 1 hour is also equally important to avoid weight gain.

I am a diabetic since 1989. I am under continuous treatment and my blood glucose levels remain under control mostly. But for last two years I have been suffering from acute acidity. Dear lybrate-user, improve your diet, timing of diet. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Avoid fried items. Don't lie down soon after meals. Have omez only when you get acidity. Long term use of omez may lead to bone thinning or osteoporosis. Check the list of medicines and remove offending agent with help of your doctor. Long standard diabetes leads to gastroparesis or slow move of stomach which leads to acid reflux. Discuss this with your doctor.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I want to know the perfect diet for diabetic patient for breakfast for lunch and the dinner.
Mr. lybrate-user, There is nothing like perfect diet, because our food habits are totally indivudualised, hence diet recommendations also have to be specific to each individual. In India food habits differ widely, for example in north wheat flour, rajma, black dal, paneer and ghee intake is much higher. In Rajasthan, Gujrat food is much different. Bengal fish dominates the intake along with rice. In South Indian food rice varieties are plenty. In Central India habit is different. So there can not be a single perfect diet. It has to be based on your current habits, weight (ideal body weight), extent of exercise, need for weigh reduction and blood glucose levels. Thanks.

My mother (58+ Y) is under treatment for Hypothyroidism & Hypertension. She used to have controlled BP (110/70 - 130/80) & sugar (FBS - 97) till a month back. Over last few days she is very tensed due to health issues at home. Today afternoon she suddenly felt 'chakkar' lost vision for 3-4 minutes & was about to fall down from the sitting position. Her speech was also not very clear during those 3-4 m. We also observed her left hand is shaking for that time. However, she was back to normal activities within 5 minutes. Is this an emergency? What should be our next steps?

Mr. lybrate-user, Thank you for your query, I understand your concern. Looking at your description it is not very clear whether she ahs any serious episode of storke or not. However, please get the blood pressure checked, if it has remained as mentioned then there may not be any serious issue. However, she should meet her regular doctor and go through a thorough examination. Is her TSH in good control? (between 3 to 4 mU/L), if not then thyroxine dose may have to be increased. If you have any doubts please do come back. Thanks.

Infertility - Homeopathic Way To Treat It!

Infertility - Homeopathic Way To Treat It!

Most couples who get married intend to go the family route sooner or later. However for those who have been trying sexual intercourse for more than 6 months without any contraceptive aids and still have not succeeded in having a baby, the underlying cause may be infertility in one or both partners. Infertility affects up to 15% of couples trying to conceive and have a baby.

Infertility, in medical terms, refers to a person’s biological inability to contribute to conception. There are many biological causes that may make this happen, some of which can be medically corrected.

The Homeopathic Approach to Treat Infertility:

The homeopathic approach towards the management of health problems is constitutional. The treatment takes into account the presenting complaints - the symptoms - along with the unique physical, mental and genetic make-up that individualizes a person. Homeopathic medicines act at the roots of all ailments. They can rectify deviations of the hormonal system and get them back to normalcy. The simple homeopathic procedure effectively and efficiently avoids complicated procedures that follow the common treatments of infertility. More specifically, the complete hormonal harmony greatly increases the chances of conception without the harmful and/or painful side effects of medications, devices and invasive procedures. The biggest advantage of homeopathic treatment is that even after the treatment, the high sperm count is maintained. The medicines involved are easy to take, since there are only sweet pills and drops.

The homeopath plans the medication separately for every individual, by understanding his or her physical, as well as emotional and mental or spiritual imbalances. That is why this system becomes an excellent option for those seeking help with this issue, as it addresses health on a deep holistic level. The homeopath carefully prescribes the medicine that works on the real cause of infertility, along with other symptoms like any type of pain, stress, etc.

There are no prerequisites to start a homeopathy treatment for infertility. Anyone who just came to know about their infertility problem or those who have tried other infertility treatments without any results can consult a homeopath. Homeopathy medicines can also be used with other treatment methods, but the homeopath should be informed about it to prevent any interfering actions.

Final Tips For Infertility Treatments Using Homeopathy:

Homeopathy therapy works on male and female infertility in following way:

  1. It regulates and balances the body’s hormones, menstrual cycle and enhances the ovulation process in females.
  2. In males, it helps to increase the sperm count, their mobility and also their morphology by naturally stimulating the body.
  3. It helps with emotional blockages, disturbances and ambiguous thought processes that may affect fertility.
  4. It helps with the stress, anxiety and depression problems for those who are trying to conceive.
  5. It also helps in curing the side-effects of various other fertility treatments.

The homeopathic treatment for infertility is strictly individualistic. Whatever the reason that the patient opts for homeopathy, the treatment should be supported by a healthy diet and proper lifestyle, like avoiding alcohol and smoking. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.

Is it compulsory for everyone to have sugar in a day or can replace it with other options.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Is it compulsory for everyone to have sugar in a day or can replace it with other options.
Mr. Lybrate-user, sugar is a form of carbohydrate known as disaccharride, which two molecules mono saccharride glucose + fructose. All other foods that we eat like rice, roti, chapati, potato, banana, sweet potato, tapioca, other grains (cereals) all contain starch, which on digestion give maltose (disaccharride) then glucose. So whether you eat sugar or not we get enough glucose in our food. There is no compultion mentioned about consuming sugar. Thanks.
