Please consult a counsellor who will help you to understand your root cause of depression. The counsellor will also help you to cope up with life challenges by modifying your thoughts. The counsellor will help you to explore various career options. Once you have some goal in life and once your sadness is reduced, you will feel more energetic and will be again interested in life.

I lost some close last year and since then feel very depressed and prefer keeping to myself all the time .please help...
It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone. You can contact me for further help, if required.

Marriage Counselling: Role of the Relationship Counselor

Marriage Counselling: Role of the Relationship Counselor

Marriage is perhaps the most important relation in an adult’s life. That’s why it needs extra care and attention, especially when things are not exactly gung ho. This is where marriage or marital therapy comes in.

Marriage counseling is the process of counseling the married couple to recognize and to reconcile or at least manage differences and repeating patterns of stress upon the marital relationship.

Basic practices of marital therapy

  1. The basic practices of marital therapy focus primarily on the process of communicating. Counselors use a method called active listening.
  2. Another method used is called “Cinematic immersion”. Both these methods have one important thing in common- they help counselors create a safe environment where each partner can express feelings and hear the feelings of the other.
  3. Emotionally focused therapy for couples or EFT-C is also used. This is based on attachment theory and uses emotion as an agent of change and target, both.
  4. Behavioral couples’ therapy is another method used. It is actually a proven way out of marital discord. This method focuses on integrating the twin goals of acceptance and change for couples in therapy.

The successful couples usually make concrete changes to accommodate the needs of the partner and also show greater emotional acceptance of the other.

Role of the relationship counselor
A couple therapist is usually someone with a degree in psychiatry or counseling. And her primary role is to listen, understand and facilitate better communication between the couple. The counselor also:

  1. Provides a confidential tete-a tete, which normalizes feelings
  2. Enables each partner to be heard and to hear themselves
  3. Works as a mirror to reflect the marriage’s difficulties to the partners
  4. Outlines the potential and direction for change
  5. Delivers important information
  6. Improves communication
  7. Identifies the repetitive, negative interaction cycle that drives a problematic marriage as a pattern
  8. Understands the source of emotions behind that negative pattern
  9. Re-organizes these key emotional responses to offset the pattern
  10. Creates new patterns of interaction
  11. Increases emotional attachment between partners

When should you seek marital therapy?

  1. When you avoid communicating or your communication has become negative- This usually means bad language, verbal abuse, and sometimes physical abuse.
  2. When you or your partner have sought out other sexual partners – Marital therapy can save a marriage after an affair if both partners want and work out the kinks in their relationship.
  3. Lack of intimacy in the marriage- This is the stage when partners just occupy the same space without communication, or exchange of feelings or touch.

Marriage counseling is a long process. And another thing to remember is that it can’t save a marriage that is unsalvageable. So, go in for marital therapy with an aim to do what’s the best for you and your partner.

I loved someone. He gave me a lot of words and won my heart when I used to hate love. Now he is telling we are only friends. I was physical with him and now I want but he does not. I feel like dying. Please suggest.

Its an old saying. Men offer the term 'Marriage' to have sex and women offer 'Sex' to get married. In a Practical world, all men think about is Sex - not friendship, nor soulmates, nor 3 am friends, nor acquaintences, nor brother-like person, nor wellwisher, nor family friend. I simply fail to understand, why women donot understand this basic practical rule followed by men. And then women cry wolf. Go to a Psychiatrist or a psychotherapist to get assessed and or counseling regarding practical life situations

My mother is suffering from depression and some form of psychotic disorder from the past 10 years , she used to talk to herself, doing arguments with my father on issues that didn't even existed. We took her to many doctors and her condition cured very much but still she can't get somethings out of her head (sometimes I feel like she has brainwashed herself) and still fights with my dad due to which my father became an alcoholic and our family conditions are also not good as we are 3 sisters and 1 brother, thinking about this lately has made me depressed. Please advice me what to do as I am also not doing great in life.

So sad you are able to use lybrate, but haven't understood your mother's illness. Based on what you said, she is suffering from schizophrenia, a major mental disorder. One needs to understand the disorder, take continuous treatment, even then some deficits might be there. Your father should have been supportive, giving treatment to her and taking care of the kids, and not going for alcohol dependence (which is rationalization). Understand your mother s illness and giving her continuous treatment, if your psychiatrist is not able to bring significant improvement get a second opinion.

Dear user, Nervousness or Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety medicines alone cannot cure anxiety disorders mainly because medicines do not alter behavior. Behavior change and Continuous practice of the changed behavior cure anxiety. I suggest anxiety education, progressive counseling and progressive psychotherapy. I assure you complete cure. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

Hi, firstly medicines are really effective please find a good doctor and stick to them and complete the course of medication to avoid relapse. Secondly, you need psychotherapy consult a psychologist for same. If you really want to cure your anxiety forever, you need to have a long term treatment plan that takes into consideration your anxiety symptoms, what you're suffering from, how badly you're suffering, and your specific anxiety disorder. First and foremost, don't let your anxiety cause you to make poor decisions about anxiety treatments. The reality is that most" rapid" treatments don't work. You'll find many people that claim that they have an extract or a medicine that can cure your anxiety immediately, and unfortunately it's never the case - it's people taking advantage of you in your time of need, and hoping the placebo effect will be enough to cure your anxiety. Even prescription medications have a" false" component. Prescription medicines can give you some help with anxiety, but that help is only temporary, and your mind and body can actually become dependent on these medications. As soon as you stop taking them, your anxiety may not only come back - it could even be worse than before. Curing your anxiety is a process - it's a process that can happen, for everyone, but those that hope they can get instant anxiety help are going to be disappointed, and possibly taken advantage of. Your symptoms define your anxiety if you really want to cure your anxiety forever, you need to have a long term treatment plan that takes into consideration your anxiety symptoms, what you're suffering from, how badly you're suffering, and your specific anxiety disorder. Imately effective treatment. Setting up a long term plan - making realistic goalsi possible to reduce your anxiety every day. There are countless tips to learn to manage it. But you need to do two things: you need to make sure that you're giving yourself realistic goals. You need to make it a long term plan. You can get anxiety help now - help that will genuinely reduce your experience with anxiety. But it will only reduce it so much. You'll still need to keep at it, and commit to it in a way that will guarantee short and long term results. Realistic goals will ensure that you don't give up. You're bound to have setbacks, because life isn't stress free. A long term plan will also make sure that you keep at it - you'll not only have something to do next, you'll also know what to do next. For example, let's look at several strategies you can do right now that will reduce your anxiety: start jogging jogging isn't just for your health. Jogging releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that improve mood. It also tires muscles, and there is evidence that extra energy in muscles becomes converted to a feeling of anxiety. Sleep better getting more sleep will fight anxiety right away. Far too many people are allowing themselves to be sleep deprived, but sleep is one of the most important and easy tools your mind has for coping with stress. Breathing training many anxiety symptoms, particularly for those with anxiety attacks, are a result of inadequate breathing techniques. Anxiety can actually train your body to breathe poorly, leading to hyperventilation and a variety of related symptoms. Exposure therapy exposure is a cognitive behavioral technique that trains you to get used to things that used to cause you anxiety. For example, if you often get anxiety when you feel dizzy, you spin around in a chair and use a variety of techniques to calm your mind. Lifestyle changes many lifestyle changes that you will need to make in order to live with anxiety also require long term changes. For example, who you spend time with may need to change, as will how you react at your workplace. These strategies take longer, and require more effort and planning on your part. They're also not immediately successful, and there are often setbacks. Realistic goals and an effective and healthy plan can reduce the effects of these setbacks. You'll also need to be okay with admitting to yourself that you have an anxiety problem that needs to be solved. If you continue to try to fight the truth about your anxiety, you'll struggle to overcome it. Anxiety and stress are very real problems that affect people every day, and there's nothing wrong with you if you suffer from them. As soon as you can come to terms with your anxiety, you'll be on the right path towards treating it. Consult me for psychotherapy of depression, confusion, irritation etc.

I am 32 yrs old male married, am addicted to booze (drink). With out booze I am uncontrollable my self please suggest me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you cannot manage without alcohol, then you are pretty badly addicted to the stuff. You must explore why you need to drink. Are you covering up some deep rooted pain? Are you avoiding something that you are ashamed of or do not want to look at? Is there a deep issue that you are unable to deal with? And so on. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ?cross addictions? i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Your children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father?s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the Adult Children Of Alcoholics Syndrome (ACOAs), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems and they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. They will need the family?s written consent before willing to take him in this manner. Make a serious plan with the wife and children and whoever else?s support you can get and act on it fast.
