I am 23 years old I have stammering problem for 23 years. What is the solution to cure that.

MSc, PGDGC, M.Phil - Psychology
Psychologist, Chennai
Hi, check whether the stammering arises from the beginning of your birth or it is situational basis. If it is situational basis means you are anxiety it seems, be in that anxiety situation for longer time, this will reduce your anxiety. If it is from birth, ignore this condition, accept your problem of difficulty.

Depression is your body’s defense mechanism against the ill-effects of chronic negative thinking. Depression ‘turns down’ all emotional responses. Without depression, your body must deal with the constant fight-or-flight stress response that is the result of chronic negative thinking. Depression literally depresses the effects of negative thinking by numbing-you-out to fear, but depression is not selective so you also become numb to other emotions, such as love and joy. Maybe you have blamed depression for your negative thinking but, I promise you, it is the other way around – it is your negative thinking that has caused depression. This is good news, because it means that by correcting improper thinking, you can rise up from depression.

Hi lybrate-user, it seems you have dissociation along with depression. Dissociation is a common phenomenon. Most people will experience dissociation at some point in their lives. It becomes a disorder, like in dissociative identity disorder (DID), when it is so frequent or severe that it interrupts a person’s daily life. One common technique used for dissociation is called grounding. It is a technique that helps a person regain connection with his or her physical body. This may often end the dissociation, or will at least make it more bearable. When a person dissociates, he or she may practice the technique of grounding. There are many different ways to practice grounding. The main idea is to do something that brings a person back in touch with his or her body. Use physical sensations. Try touching the table, feeling the grass, or smelling a flower. Doing activities that enhance your physical sensations will help you to come back to a solid state. It has helped me to wash my face with water, or hold a couple of ice cubes. Speak truths out loud. It has been helpful for me to try to speak the truth out loud. This can be things like, “I am 31 years old,” or “I live in Indianapolis.” This will help to make sense of the reality that the person lives in, as we can often get confused about our lives when we dissociate. Try laughter. This is a big one. If you’re alone, try turning on some comedy on YouTube. If you are with a trusted friend, try asking them to make you laugh. Better yet, tell your loved ones ahead of time that laughter helps when you dissociate. It will help you to feel your internal body, it will lighten the seriousness of the situation, and it may bring you out of dissociation. Overall, be patient with yourself. Grounding techniques take practice and may feel unusual in the initial moments. Remember that dissociation is not usually dangerous and that it will pass. I would suggest you to consult a psychologist. You can consult with me too. All the best.

Hi, I want to leave alcohol habit, but I can't able to leave. In morning I am ok but in evening I go automatically on wine shop. So please give me good suggestion.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It only feels like you can't. In fact the evening time is when the urge is strongest. You need to be with someone at that time or do some interesting activities that will engage your mind and boy. It does not matter when you feel like drinking, as long as you need your drink. This could lead to increased tolerance levels so that over time you will need to drink more to get the same or greater effect. You need to identify why you need to drink, and go back into your childhood to find out other influences on your personality that makes you prone to addiction. Meet with an addiction counselor and work with them to sort out this drive. Your already display the classic tendency to first obsess about it and then compulsively feel driven to meet that need. The simplest thing to do is to do some other interesting activity during the evening times. Meet your oral need with some other non-intoxicating drink like soups, juices, and sodas with lime, etc. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Make a serious plan with the family and whoever else’s support you can get and act on it fast. As a combination these two therapies (counseling and rehabilitation) will aid in dealing with the addiction. It will however take a long time to completely come off of the enslavement.

A Healthy Parent-Child Relationship Provides Healthy Outcomes

A Healthy Parent-Child Relationship Provides Healthy Outcomes

Parenting is an art, while some are natural at it others would have to learn about it in order to fare better. In any case, equipping yourself with the relevant knowledge can help you in the process. Especially, if you feel your child is disconnected or throwing tantrums lately, it is time you recognize the signs and focus on strengthening your relationship with your kid.

Here is a brief insight on how to navigate such challenging scenario successfully.

  1. Spending quality time with your child: Quality time refes to the time spent with your child in some way important. It is time that is set aside for paying full and undivided attention to your child. According to psychologists spending quality time with your kids is of great importance as it helps in strengthening the bond between you and your kid, understanding your child better and making your child feel important and loved. The behavioral issues your child is showing maybe because of that he or she wants more of your time.
  2. Positive reinforcement for promoting good behaviors: As a parent, it is very natural to want your child to be obedient and devoid of the bad behaviors.
  3. Ignoring negative behaviors to obliterate them: Sometimes, as a parent, you need to overlook the mistakes or bad behaviors shown by your kid to annihilate them. This means, scolding your kid upon a failure or discouraging him that he is not good enough as he lacks good behavior can do mental damage to your kids and in no way can make them a better person. Sometimes, ignoring a few of their mistakes, failures or bad behavior can help them in overcoming their drawbacks.
  4. Understanding psychosexual stages of childhood: According to psychologists, it is the initial five years of a child's life that plays a crucial role in forming his or her adult personality. As a child continues to grow, both tension and pleasure grow with it depending on the discharge of all the accumulated sexual energy or libido. Since, psychosexual stages of a child matter gravely in his or her personality development, understanding it becomes crucial for parents for improving the quality of your relationship with their children.

Ensuring a functional and healthy relationship between you and your child is the best way to boost the sense of commitment, consideration, communication, and cooperation. Also, a healthy connection between you and your child can help in reducing conflicts and stress while encouraging the young minds to make healthy choices in life and set strong individual values.

Mental strength of each individual varies according to the parenting they get in the childhood days, school environment, behaviour of friends circle, relatives etc. Most of depressed patients are of thinking more about their sins or guilt too much. Gulity conscious is good to some extent but beyond a limit leads to lack of interest in daily activities, poor concentration, indifference towards parents, relatives and friends whom you loved much. This again makes your mind much more worse. There are few simple tips to get rid of too much sensitive nature of mind and guilty conscious through counselling. Medical required or not is judged only after consulting patient mental status either directly or online. For treatment consult a qualified homoeopath.
