My mother doesn't sleep more than 4 hrs throughout in a day. I noticed that she tried to sleep but she couldn't. She looses temper very quickly, and she got very angry and become very happy within a short time.

This does not sound too good and she must meet a doctor and a counselor in tandem for a long time for treatment. So without wasting time do take your mom to a doctor and to a counselor for diagnosis and treatment immediately. You must make sure that she cooperates because many times they do not believe that there is something wrong and would love to quit the medication. Complying with all the medical prescriptions and working in tandem with a counselor for a long time and learning coping skills and techniques to handle the daily challenges your mom will face is very important. There are certain adaptations that will suit her during the elation phase and there are certain behaviors that are required during the depressed phases. In the meantime she can do certain things that will give her benefits anyway. Emotional therapy will alleviate a lot of the problems faced in this condition because it is a mood disorder. She needs to particularly look at her levels of anger both for its reasonableness and to express it in appropriate manner. I suspect that much of this anger may have origins in early childhood that she may never be aware of it now. Let her talk to her parents and explore that angle. This information will help the counselor too. Also she will need to check whether there is any genetic factor involved. She must exercise regularly, eat healthily and sleep normally too. If her motivation and cooperation is good much can be achieved. She must have a time-structured schedule filled with interesting and reasonable activities and it must be monitored for compliance and delivery. The reason I say this is that many times she will be inclined to have grandiose notions and confidently believe that she can do without the medication. This will set her back many months in the treatment and delay and sabotage the recovery: forewarned she is forearmed. If this combination of medication with therapy is maintained for at least three years without any episodes or breakdowns, it is possible to taper the medication in consonance with the doctor. This condition is characterized by two extremes i.e. feeling very high and suddenly feeling very low. You can ask the doctor for the symptoms he noticed in her for a personal understanding.

General Physician,
You have forgetfulness and you have to make a list of things you have to do and keep doing one by one and tick off things yu have done. By this systematic way you can do all the work. Do meditation and yoga for controlling anxiety and mind.

Hello, I'M studying in engineering 2nd year. Since from my childhood I am not people person. I don't talk to anyone much. I'm mostly alone all time living in my dreams. I am passionate about science till my SSC. Upto SSC I have a feeling that I'm the most talented and always felt like king. During intermediate I was in hostel .there I did not adjust first. I was hyper active that time I thought I was special and talked to everyone. While talking I talked nonsense too. Many thought I was stupid, as I was in top section many thought I was topper .then I met a person who was silent and decent we because frnds .I saw how people respected him and how I was treated. So I also wanted to be like him and because silent. Which failed my confidence. So I thought when I leave this campus and go to another CLG I will be like him .my studies too fell I felt alone, depressed. Some how I completed my intermediate with 96%. I went to hyd for EAMCET coaching. I was there in my aunt's house. Got a seat in Mohan babu CLG in Tirupati. I took cse, because I thought I can talk well and I have interest in coding. But when l in CLG I did not made any frnds. I was very egotic for 2 weeks then I realized I need frnds but they were habituated to CLG so I thought what if I create a situation that I have made frnds correctly, this is my stupidity I know some where in me telling this is wrong, I locked myself in my hostel room and started thinking that. I know there is much world which I should know days passed I didn't changed I not even talked to many if they will know I did not group so I acted Daily thinking of my past. Small things became big to me .I don't know what I am doing. Its like if I slept for 2 years and just woke up. Condition became worse I forgot myself I was not talking to anyone that they will know I did not group to things. Many boys became friends with girls some fell in love .(In school I was talking well with girls in fact I used to talk mostly with them. I thought playing outside was nonsense so I only watched TV. During school days ,and also my parents made me to study all Time. My dad didn't have a job my mom is a school teacher. My dad did not want smaller jobs to do so he did not do any .they were fighting all time because of that I full of ego .)now I don't know what to do all got frnds I am single. All came to I am stupid. So tell how to get out of this.

YOu can try natural methods or need medicines . 5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1. Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2. Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat.. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3. Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5.Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications please ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all. Some risk factors for men developing depression or anxiety include: • Physical health problems • Relationship problems • Employment problems • Social isolation • Significant change in living arrangements (e.g. separation or divorce) • Pregnancy and birth of a baby • Drug and alcohol use.

My mother 82 years, has been diagnosed with Parkinsynosis after trial and error from several physicians and surgeons who first treated her for NPH for around 3 years, and also for bi-polar disease for about a decade. She seems to be on the path of recovery as far as the Parkinson's disease is concerned. But she has movement problems is not able to stand on her feet/legs and needs to be lifted. She also has problems with her back. We have been advised to give her Neuro-physiotherapist support. Kindly advise.

Dear Shanta, At this ripe age, your mother needs physiotherapy more than any diagnosis and treatment. Try and reduce your or any other caretakers burden. You can plan for a home nursing aid to help you out of burn out. There are many old age aids in the market like special beds, commodes and walkers. Try out the ones those will be useful.

Respected Sir, The fact that you mention that you were suffering from Depression and GAD since 7 years and took treatment only for 2 would lead me to believe that you were either irregular in your treatment or inadequately treated. If that is the case, the symptoms you mentioned are clearly due to persisting of your depression. On the other hand if you have been taking the drugs regularly and still have these symptoms, that would make yours a resistant case. I would have to know the drugs that you had been taking to help you out further, if you feel that you were resistant even after complying with the treatment.

I smoke cigarettes regularly. Two days back I took Classic Mint Menthol cigarette with push button which are new in market. When pressed releases extra cold Mint in huge quantity. As chance have it I tried it. After pressing the button I felt sudden burst of cold in my throat, as huge Mint flavour was released. I puffed that cigarette 3-4 times. The next morning I had pain in my throat, fever, difficulty in swallowing. Kindly suggest.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear Rajnesh, Sudden cold in the throat cause pharyngitis or laryngitis. That may be the cause for throat pain, fever and difficulty in swallowing. Salt water goggle, steam inhalation and antibiotics if necessary will treat the inflamed throat. Mint and menthol may not be the cause. Please plan soon to quit regular cigarettes..If you have withdrawal symptoms use nicotine replacement gum or patch.
