lybrate-user ji, Thanks for the query. Thyroid is the gland present in all of us. Some times it may secrete excess Thyroxine leading to Hyperthyroidism (over active gland with very low TSH values) or there may be reduced or absence of secretion leading to Hypothyroidism (under active gland). Therefore, please mention the thyroid test details, then only I can advise. Thanks.

Lybrate-user, for hypothyroidism if you are on treatment, then tsh should be between 3 to 4 milli units/l, for complete relief from symptoms. You can have breakfast like everyone else. There is nothing special required. Following foods / vegetables should be avoided: - soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. Always use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Avoid maida and products made out of it. All bakery items should be avoided. Consume more of green leafy vegetable, salads and fruits. Avoid high fat containing cheese. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, if it hypothyroidism, then treatment with thyroxine in adequate dose is the main treatment. It is essential achieve very good control and reduce tsh level to 3 to 4 mlunits/l, then all the symptoms will be in check. He should avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, pea nuts, coffee. Use whole grain flour for chapati & roti, should avoid maida and other refined flour and items made out of those. Should avoid bakery items and high fat milk products. Should exercise regularly for at least 1 hour, essential for maintaining normal weight. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, you having obesity, grade 2, with 35.11 kgs/m2 bmi. This very high and can be troublesome. It is better to get tsh levels checked (thyroid assay), that will help in finding out if there is hypothyroidism. If uncontrolled hypothyroidism is present then weight gain is very common. It is better if you join a gym and do exercise under guidance, that will help. Plus a proper dietary intake has to be planned, giving calories based on your ideal body weight and extent of daily exercise. So first get thyroid testing done. Thanks for the question.

Many common foods and supplements contain compounds that interfere with thyroid functions. In general, it’s best to avoid the following foods and supplements: Soy: Studies suggest that phytoestrogens in soybeans and soy-rich foods may inhibit the activity of an enzyme that makes the thyroid hormones. One study found that women who consumed soy supplements were three times more likely to develop hypothyroidism. Iodine-rich foods: Some forms of hypothyroidism are caused by a lack of sufficient iodine. In such cases, using iodized salt or iodine-enriched foods can be beneficial. But eating too much iodine can have the opposite effect and suppress thyroid gland activity. Check with your doctor before taking supplements. Iron and calcium supplements: Taking iron or calcium supplements can also change the effectiveness of many thyroid medications. High-fiber foods: Although a high-fiber diet is usually recommended, too much fiber may interfere with the absorption of thyroid medicines. Certain vegetables: Cruciferous vegetables that are rich in fiber like broccoli, cabbage, spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts can inhibit thyroid drug absorption. Reducing the amounts of such produce in your diet may help. Caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol can also influence the effectiveness of thyroid medicine. Ask your doctor for tips on how to regulate or reduce your consumption. The thyroid is a small gland at the base of the throat that makes hormones to regulate growth and metabolism. These hormones influence a variety of organs, so they can affect body temperature, weight, cardiovascular health, and fertility. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too little of these hormones. If your thyroid hormone levels are too low, you may experience symptoms like fatigue, digestive problems, sensitivity to cold temperatures, and menstrual irregularities. Although there may be no cure for hypothyroidism, the condition can be managed with medication. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to many complications, such as heart problems, nerve damage, and infertility.
