My son is 4 months old and I feel m a terrible mother bcoz I get frustrated sometimes with his constant crying n feeding distractions. I think I shud give him to his grandmother (Nani) who lives in different state. She loves him so so much and has told me so many times to focus on my career n leave the child to her place. But at the same time I am overwhelmed with so much guilt. And I love my son so much. But all I am doing is for him. And I cannot trust any other person for childcare other than his grandmother. What should I do. Please help.

You are going through a usual cycle of guilt and love that all mothers go through. Take it easy on yrslf. Be surrounded by loved ones and talk to them. You can get back to your work n career without guilt. Call your mother over for sometime till you learn to balance work n home. Don’t expect too much from yralf and set your priorities. Non of us are super humans to be able to balance work and family with ease. It always will take efforts and be prepared for it. Remember though grandparents can love the child unconditionally they cannot substitute the child’s own parents. Take the day as it comes n enjoy his childhood. Take time out for yralf n go out with years friends. A happy mom is all a child needs.

Head is always warm in children. If you apply oil on it then it can cause sneezing, running nose due to smell of oil and accidental touching of nose with oil soiled hands. If you can check axillary temperature and find above 99.5°F then it's fever. Otherwise nothing is needed. Avoid putting oil on head as body looses heat by sweating and oil wool reduce it which in turn will raise the heat.

Save Hearing Loss - Tips!

Save Hearing Loss - Tips!

Your hearing is one of the most important functions your body carries out and sometimes you realize that you are losing your sense of hearing when it is too late to get it back. There are two main reasons for this. One of the reasons is age, as the inner ear's hair cells break down and do not pick up sound well.

Here are 9 ways to safeguard your hearing:

1. Try to avoid loud places - It is not advisable to go to places where you have to shout to be heard such as in a street, a concert or a construction site.

2. Buy low noise rating equipment - The equipments in your house will make sounds that you hear the most. Try to avoid these equipments by buying appliances with a low noise rating.

3. Wear hearing protection at loud places - However, it is true that it is not always possible to avoid loud noises. This is when you need to get hearing protection. Earplugs and earmuffs are two of the best ways to make sure that even when you are in a loud place, your hearing does not get affected. Earplugs and earmuffs generally reduce sound by 15 to 30 decibels which may be crucial to make sure that later in your life, you do not lose your hearing.

4. Avoid smoke - Smoking raises your chances of hearing loss. Second hand smoke does the same thing. Therefore, try to stop smoking if you are a smoker, and try to stop consuming second hand smoke if you are not a smoker.

5. Remove earwax properly - Earwax cannot be removed properly using a cotton swab. Instead, you should use an irrigation kit. Remember this as otherwise; the earwax could muffle your hearing.

6. Avoid medications which reduce hearing - Certain medications increase hearing loss. Therefore, double check with your doctor to make sure your medicines will not make you lose your hearing.

7. Get your hearing tested - Finally, get your hearing tested as identifying the problem early on can help stop worsen the situation.

8. Avoid using earbuds - Earbuds should not be used regularly as it may accidentally damage your eardrum which can eventually lead to hearing loss can happen.

9. Taking anti-oxidants and vitamins - Recent studies have proved that taking vitamins and anti-oxidants in adequate amount help avoiding the hearing loss for a long time.

My baby is 6 month old and I have started solid to her. How many time I should give her food in a day.

My baby is 6 month old and I have started solid to her. How many time I should give her food in a day.
Hi lybrate-user, thank you for your query. After 6 months, complimentary feeds to be started in addition to breast milk. To start, give one semisolid feed in a day and gradually increase to 2 feeds in a day over 10 to 14 days. So during 6-8 months, 2-3 feeds in a day and during 9-12 months, 3-4 feeds of complimentary feeds can be given. Give mashed feeds. Hope I have answered your concerns.

8 Things You Need To Ask About Diaper Rash!

MD DDVL Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Kochi
8 Things You Need To Ask About Diaper Rash!

Here are a few questions which every new mother wants to know when they see a diaper rash:

1. Should the baby's diet be changed during a diaper rash?
Certain food items such as fruit juices can lead to diarrhea in babies. This can lead to a diaper rash. When new food is introduced or antibiotics are given, then that might also affect the digestion of the baby.

2. Are teething and diaper rash related?
As per dermatologists, the two have nothing in common though they might occur at the same time.

3. Which ointment should be used for a diaper rash?
Ointments that contain zinc oxide can provide relief from diaper rash. A thick layer should be applied on the skin to keep away irritants as if all of it is rubbed off then it might cause pain.

4. Can cloth diapers be an alternative?
The fact is that there is no proof that a cloth diaper might be better than the other diaper in case of a rash. In case, disposable diapers are used, then care should be taken to change them frequently as rashes can occur due to a moist environment. If the baby is allergic to a particular brand, then changing the same could prove to be helpful. Diapers induced with fragrances and dyes can cause allergic reactions. Babies who are allergic to disposable diapers can do better with cloth ones, though they should be changed frequently. The rule is one diaper per hour, so the needful should be done.

5. What type of wipes is best for the baby in case of a sore bottom?
In case of a diaper rash a mild, fragrance-free wipe should be used. Wipes which are labeled as hypoallergenic or for sensitive skin should be used. If the baby poops then he or she must be cleaned with a cloth and water and later some mineral oil should be applied to the baby's bottom.

6. What should be done if nappy rash extends to the other parts?
In case there are red spots and patches outside the nappy area, then the baby might be suffering from an infection. If this happens then consult your doctor.

7. What should be done to give relief to the baby?
The best thing to do is that the baby's bottom should get some air. Leave the baby without a diaper, as this gives his skin a break from the rubbing, and germs which might be present in wet places like a diaper. Application of the cream with zinc oxide provides relief to a baby.

8. How long does the rash last?
Maximum of 3 days.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
