Bones are similar to a porous framework which is filled with minerals that make it hard and strong. With age, there is gradual degradation and the mineralized portion is lost, thereby leading to thinning of the bone. The word osteoporosis literally translates to porous bones, which is due to the gradual demineralisation. In addition to the natural ageing process, there are other diseases that can accelerate the demineralization process.

Women are more prone to demineralisation, and after the age of 40, they should take extra precaution to slow down the onset of the condition. The following are some ways to improve bone health and halt osteoporosis in the long run-

  1. Diet: Ensure that your diet has sufficient amounts of vitamin D and calcium. Though calcium is the essential mineral for bone formation, vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium, and therefore both these elements play a vital role in maintaining the quality of the bones in our body. Most people require about 1,000 mg of calcium and about 500 units of vitamin D for optimal bone health. This requirement goes up slightly in postmenopausal women.

  2. Sun Exposure: In most people, exposure to the sun allows the body to make vitamin D, but careful sun protection prevents this from happening. Also, with age, the body’s ability to form intrinsic vitamin D also declines. The body, therefore, relies on supplements. Most dairy products are good sources of calcium. In addition, spinach, salmon, turnips, and broccoli are some calcium-rich foods. Supplements of calcium carbonate or calcium citrate can be taken if your diet is lacking in calcium. Vitamin D also should be included in the supplementation. The treatment for osteoporosis is incomplete without these two supplements.

  3. Exercise With Weights: The constructive tension that exercise puts on the body helps in bone building, whatever the age may be, which prevents the onset of osteoporosis. Any exercise which improves muscle mass strengthens the bones, and puts stress on the bones is advisable. Since the fractured area due to osteoporosis mainly includes the spine, lower back exercises, yoga, tai chi, and abdominal exercises all work wonders. Pick any of these and do them for 30 minutes three times a week.

  4. Quit Smoking: Continuing to smoke while taking osteoporosis medications is completely useless. Nicotine negates all the effects which defeat the purpose of taking the medication and is as good as taking no medication at all. So if you want the bone thinning to stop, stop smoking.

  5. Alcohol Consumption: While a drink or two per week is permissible, more than this can harm the bones significantly.

  6. Constant Health Watch: Talk to your doctor about how other routine medications (if any) can affect your bone health. Also, identify how frequently you should check your bone mineral density and stick to the schedule.

Bone health and osteoporosis can be managed with some conscious efforts.

Diabetes is a serious disease, but if properly managed is not life threatening. Diabetes can be explained as the body’s inability to regulate insulin production. This leads to fluctuations in blood sugar levels. This disease affects every part of the body including the skin. For some people, a rash is among the first few symptoms of diabetes. Most diabetic patients suffer from a skin condition at some point or the other. Here are a few common skin ailments that affect diabetic patients.

  1. Bacterial infections: A weakened immune system makes diabetics more vulnerable to bacterial infections than normal. These bacterial infections can be typically seen in the form of styles on the eyelid, boils, carbuncles and nail infections. They usually make the skin around the infected area red, inflamed and painful. Most skin bacterial skin ailments can be treated with antibiotic creams and pills.
  2. Fungal infections: One of the most common fungal infections that diabetic patients suffer from is known as Candida albicans. This ailment is characterised by a red, itchy rash that is surrounded by small blisters. It is caused by yeast-like fungus and usually found in moist areas like the armpits or between the toes. Other fungal infections that affect diabetic patients include ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot and vaginal yeast infections.
  3. Itchy skin: Diabetics often suffer from itchiness that could be triggered by yeast infections, dry skin and poor circulation. People with poor circulation will find their calves and feet to be the itchiest part of the body, While poor circulation and yeast infections may need medical attention, dry skin can be easily treated by keeping the skin internally and externally hydrated along with the use of a mild moisturising soap.
  4. Vitiligo: This is a skin condition where the melanin producing cells in the skin are destroyed. This leads to a patchy appearance that can be typically seen on the hands, face and chest. Vitiligo is considered to be an autoimmune disease like diabetes and has no known cause or cure. Sunscreen is a must for diabetic patients suffering from vitiligo as the unpigmented skin has no protection from UV radiation.
  5. Diabetic blisters: Patients with severe diabetes may also suffer from diabetic blisters. These blisters usually occur on the extremities of the body and resemble blisters caused by burns. They are usually pain-free and heal on their own.
  6. Disseminated granuloma annular: This condition is characterised by a ring or arc shaped areas on the skin. They can usually be seen on the fingers and ears but may also occur in the chest and abdomen. This rash may be reddish or skin coloured. Medical treatment is not generally required for this condition.

There is nothing more exciting than getting inked. It is also one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. Not many people know that there is a real risk involved with tattoos – getting them as well as getting them removed.

We all know a tattoo can come with a real risk of blood-borne diseases and allergies, and a bad job by the tattoo artist. If the tattoo needle is not new and has been used on an infected person, you run a real risk of getting infected with herpes, tetanus, fungal infections, hepatitis and even HIV. The health risks of tattooing are not so well known in India but they are real.

But tattoo removal can be even more dangerous, time consuming and expensive than getting a tattoo. If you have outgrown your tattoo and want it removed, read this carefully to understand the process while keeping yourself safe.

Tattoo removal involves a process opposite to inking. It’s done using lasers. Pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo to break up the pigment which has been deposited in the dermis or deep layer of the skin during tattooing. This process breaks down the tattoo ink. Over weeks, the broken down ink gets absorbed by the body.

Different lasers are used to remove different types of tattoo ink and it’s usually the doctor doing the procedure who decides which laser to use.

  1. Laser treatment differs from patient to patient based on the age, size, and type of tattoo. The colour of the patient's skin, as well as the depth of the tattoo pigment also influences the technique used for removal.

  2. Lasers are not benign so your doctor must test the laser to check out the most effective energy for tattoo removal.

  3. Laser consists of pulses of light. Smaller tattoo removal requires less pulses of light and bigger ones more pulses.

Sounds easy and painless. But it is not. The breaking down of the tattoo pigments takes weeks and repeated visits to the clinic. If the doctor removing your tattoo is not good, even the removal of a small tattoo can cause permanent scarring or discoloration of your skin. Parts of the body with thin skin (ankles, wrists, and spine) are more likely to scar than thicker- skinned areas. Other side effects are infections and hypo-pigmentation.

Even though doctors and laser practitioners claim more than 95 % removal of tattoos is possible, the reality is that complete removal may never be possible.

So, if you find it impossible to live with your tattoo and a divorce is imminent, you should look for a real good dermatologist for laser removal of tattoos and not submit yourself to quacks.

I have severe acne on my face and also having a too much oily skin makes it even worse. I have out many acne remedy products but nothing helped. I suffer from depression for a long time, feel stressed most of the time with frequent bouts of severe panic. I have become very timid and withdrawn that I have been facing a diminishing financial profile, worsening relations and naturally a target of predatory minds many times. It is so debilitating that I can't finish my masters degree and totally dysfunctional that I couldn't do simple things let alone pursue a career and have a family. I was among the toppers in my school till plus two, highly motivated and popular with great expectations in my extended relations and friends for my talent including that in fine arts. I had to go through Meningitis subsequently along with demise of my Grandma who had been the pillar of strength after the sudden death of my mom. The events took a nose dive since then with education taking backseat and my failing to cope with peer pressure in education. I have severe aversion to food and disturbed sleep pattern which make the condition even worse. I have been on medication for the past 24 years, I think I became psychologically and physically dependant on those medicines with their adverse effects getting more potent by the day. I'm single with almost no close relatives and with very few friends need to know if there are any treatments with prognosis however little good it is? I am completely disenchanted with life and having ideas of suicide getting more frequent gaining strength by every passing momentThank you.

Your problem is that you have not sought counseling in tandem with the medication. You need to combine these two therapies to get the best results. When you were doing yoru plus two you would have been in your late teens: a time when hormonal imbalances and resolving all childhood issues that failed to get adequate attention. Because it has likely begun at that time, it is certain that an unresolved issue from childhood is a matter to contend with in therapy. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Get urine tested for re/me and report result 1.Pass urine whenever you feel a desire, empty bladder completely. 2.Wipe from front to back after toilet 3.Take lots of water so as to have clear urine 4.Do not use any spray, scented bath products 5.Try to take shower rather than bath 6.Clean genitals before sex and pass urine after sex to flush out any bacteria 7.Keep genital area dry- wear cotton, loose under garments, avoid tight clothes like jeans for medicine contact on private consultation.

Dear Lybrate user, pain during menstruation is considered bad and overall improvement in health is necessary. Take a good healthy diet, consume seasonal fresh fruits daily, take couple of dates regularly. Drink a good quantity of liquids (3 to 3.5 ltr) per day. Take Kumari asav 20 ml with water after food twice day. All these will reduce your pain during menstruation. The treatment of infertility needs a brief history of yours and your partner. Dear lybrate-user since you have thyroid issues and irregular cycles. It could be polycystic ovarian disease which is very common nowadays you have to meet gynaecologist to confirm the same by blood tests and scan. Do regular exercise and have a control on high calorie food especially at night. Keep your face dry. Do not pick on pimples it shall leave scars. There are few creams and tablets which shall definitely help you.

Acne and pimples usually occur on the face, back, shoulders and neck. Melanin pigmentation is normal. There is nothing to worry about. Treatment is surgical Surgical method for making dark gums as natural pink: The most popular effective and simple method of removing the darkness of the gums is the surgical removal of the outer layer of the gums which gives the dark color to the gums. The procedure though surgical is a painless outdoor procedure carried out under local anesthesia.In this procedure the outer layer of gum epithelium is removed with a layer of underlying connective tissue. After the removal the connective tissue which is   left to heal by secondary intention. The new epithelium which is formed is devoid of dark pigmentation. The positive results can be seen within one to two days. After this procedure 20 to 30% of the pigmentation returns after 5 to 6 months and then stays as such. If few precautions like not exposing oneself for long hours to sunlight are observed then the gums stay pink and there is marked improvement in aesthetics. This surgical procedure can be repeated if the gums again become dark and looks bad.

Hi I am 40 years old and I was having a mild depression for which I was taking the medicine pari cr .25 with one supplement for the last 1 years but gradually I stopped taking these medicine for the 7 to 8 months approx I was feeling perfectly ok but for the last three four days I am not feeling comfortable as again the fear is there in my mind or is it the anxiety I am not figuring it out and I don't want to start these medicines again can anybody suggest me some natural way to curb this feeling helpless pls suggest.
