Sugar - Why It Is Bad For Your Skin?

Diploma in Medical Cosmetology, MBBS

Sugar - Why It Is Bad For Your Skin?

Almost every person salivates over desserts and sweets. One does not need a special occasion to get their sweet tooth going. While the lip smacking sugary delight might impress the taste buds, it is sure to affect the health in a big way. If you thought that sugar was only bad for your waistline and general health, then you need to know that it is equally harmful for your skin. In fact, it can lead to serious dermatological conditions.

Harmful effects of sugar on the skin

A lot of what we eat reflects on our body externally. A number of internal changes can influence the external appearance of the body. Excessive intake of carbohydrates, starch and sugar can have an adverse effect on the skin. It can also accelerate the ageing process. But what triggers these complications needs to be understood and discussed in detail.

Carbohydrates can be simple or complex. Simple carbohydrates (cake, bread; to name a few) break down and convert to glucose rapidly. Increased glucose level implies increased insulin level, and causes inflammation, which affects the whole body. The enzymes produced during inflammation breaks down important proteins, namely elastin and collagen, leading to wrinkles and saggy skin.

Acne problems mainly arise from Glycation (the process through which digested sugar attaches permanently to the collagen). Glycation plays a significant role in accelerating the ageing process.

Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, is good for health. When ingested, complex carbohydrates break down at a much slower rate. As a result, there is no abnormal increase in the insulin level.

Corrective measures to check the harmful effects of sugar on the skin:

With a little care and preventive measures, the deleterious effects of sugar on the skin can be minimised.

  1. Supplement your diet with foods rich in antioxidants. Lean proteins, fibrous foods and diets rich in good fats are highly recommended. Include beans and nuts that have low glycemic value in your diet. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Food items containing high amount of saturated fats (cheese, ice creams, fried foods; to name a few), and with high glycemic value should be strictly avoided.
  3. Do not compromise with your sleep. A sound sleep and a stress-free life is the mantra to a glowing and youthful skin.
  4. Practice meditation and yoga diligently. The rewarding and positive outcomes will leave you in awe.
  5. Do not skip your meals or indulge in overeating. Have small servings at regular intervals.

Tips To Maintain Your Skin Health During Monsoon!

Tips To Maintain Your Skin Health During Monsoon!

The onset of monsoon season brings in a sense of joy and peace to our mind – the cool raindrops, soothing winds, coy weather and our taste buds yearn for some hot tea with savoury snacks. Phew! It is finally a relief from the scorching summer heat. The change in weather also means it's time to change your skincare routine. This monsoon, pamper your skin with these tips and keep your skin feeling loved and fresh.

  1. Cleanse and remove the dirt: Monsoon brings in a lot of dust, which can settle on your skin and damage it, giving it a dull texture. So, it is important to cleanse your skin at least 3 times a day to remove the accumulated grime and oil that can clog your pores.
  2. Don’t forget to tone: Use an alcohol-free toner to prevent dryness. An anti-bacterial toner is recommended to prevent breakout or infections in your skin during the monsoon.
  3. Moisturise for a radiant glow: Monsoon tends to have an extra dehydrating effect on dry skin or an over-moisturising effect on oily skin. Use a light lotion-based moisturizer for gentle hydration on your skin and leave your skin feeling soft and supple with a healthy look. For oily skin, use water-based moisturizer to keep the oil secretion in check.
  4. Continue using sunscreen: The rains do not mean it’s time to stop using your sunscreen. The sun is still there and its UV rays can wreak havoc on your skin. Use a sunscreen even on a cloudy day.
  5. Avoid heavy makeup: Use water-proof makeup to prevent messy makeup in case of a sudden downpour. Also during monsoon, your skin is prone to catch dirt and infections. So, keep your makeup minimal and natural.
  6. Stay hydrated and watch your diet: Drink at least eight glasses of water in a day so that humidity does not make your skin look pale and dull. Also, watch what you are eating; it's good to keep away from oily snacks and eat wholesome meals.
  7. Use natural face packs: Facials and bleaching will make the skin rougher during the rainy season and so, it should be limited. Instead go for home-made natural face packs, based on your skin type and nourish your skin naturally.
  8. Take essential lip care: Prevent the lips from drying out and cracking. Avoid dark coloured lipsticks and use a good lip balm or apply milk cream regularly to prevent excessive drying.
  9. Use warm water: Don’t go overboard by using steaming hot water to cleanse your skin. It will make your skin weak and cause damage.

Hi lybrate-user, A fair, healthy and glowing skin is every body’s desire. Well it is not hard to achieve. A little patience and simple care with some natural and inexpensive products can do wonder for your skin. Pollution, stress and unhygienic condition can steal away your glowing complexion leaving behind dark patches, blemishes and wrinkles on your skin making it look tired and aged. Skin color is due to the presence of a pigment known as melanin. This causes a person’s complexion to be white or dark depending on its amount present in the skin. Try the following ways to get fair skin and remove dark patches from your face. 1. Lemon Juice & Honey - Mix honey and lemon juice and apply on face and other exposed parts of your body. Let it stay for twenty minutes and then wash off. For dry skin apply honey and cucumber juice of equal amount on your face and body and leave for fifteen minutes. Wash off and feel the radiance. Apply lemon juice on face every night. Remove make up before the application. Try to keep a small quantity at least for fifteen minutes on face. It may give you a burning sensation but will help in lightening your complexion. 2. Yoghurt - Apply yoghurt on your face and wash off with milk. They both act as lightening agents for skin. 3. Honey & Egg White - Prepare a face mask by combining honey and egg white. Apply the mask on your face and let it stay for few minutes. Wash off. 4. Honey & Almond Oil - Mix equal amount of almond oil and honey. Apply the mixture on face. Practice this remedy every night for a clear skin. 5. Papaya - Papaya is an effective ingredient for achieving glowing skin. Papaya is a rich source of antioxidants that helps to remove dark patches from skin. Rub a slice of ripe papaya on your face every morning. Papaya is often used in most of the home remedies for glowing skin. Tips for Fair Skin: / Eat foods rich in antioxidants. These foods help to slow down ageing and make you look younger for a long time. / Maintain proper hygiene. Do not use harsh chemicals on your face. After washing do not rub your face vigorously, instead pat dry. Remove make up before going to bed. Limit your usage of makeup. Remember excessive make usage means excessive use of chemicals that may result into clogging of pores contributing to pimples and blemishes. / Avoid long and direct sun exposure. Excessive sun exposure lead leads to skin ageing. Wear hat before going out in sun or apply sunscreen on your face and other exposed parts of your body to protect your skin from UV rays. Remember these harmful rays can steal your fair complexion resulting in skin tanning. / Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Hydrated cells will not end up in wrinkles, pimples and blemishes so easily. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Dark circles are a common problem but the cause for its occurrence has to be determined. Most of the times, it's genetic that is it runs in the family. But inadequate sleep, nutritional deficiency or working on laptop for long hours can also cause this. Please get your hemoglobin checked. If child is refusing breast from one milk or if there is pain in one breast only then you must meet a surgeon immediately. To rule out breast abscess. It may be breast engorgement. Doctor may ask you to do a sonography of breast in case there is a doubt.

Scar Revision Surgery: Types and Treatment

Scar Revision Surgery: Types and Treatment

While some scars are negligible, others can mar your beauty. With cosmetic surgery, today, it is easy to remove scars and make them less prominent. Scar revision surgery can range from invasive procedures such as scar excision to non invasive procedures such as cryotherapy, laser therapy and topical silicone therapy. However, none of these have perfect results. The main aim of scar revision surgery is to make the scars blend in as much as possible with the surrounding skin in terms of colour, texture and elevation.

Picking a scar revision procedure is a matter of weighing the pros and cons of each type of procedure and - the cause for dissatisfaction

  • functional limitations of the scar and likelihood of functional impairment after surgery
  • patient's expectations
  • location of the scar
  • quality of skin type and surrounding tissue

Scars are formed due to a number of reasons such as acne, cuts, burns, surgery and infection in a wound. Scars created by an over production of collagen are the most difficult to treat. In most cases, a patient requires multiple surgeries for scar revision.

Some of these surgeries are:

Surgical Excision: This procedure is usually performed on large scars that do not respond to medication. Here the surgeon shaves and cuts down scar tissue to minimize the size of the scar.

Laser Surgery: This is used to smoothen the scars with raised or uneven surfaces. It involves the removal of the top layer of skin and tightening of the layer below it.

Z plasty and W plasty: These surgical treatments aim to reduce the visibility of the scar by repositioning them along the natural lines and creases of the skin. All topics that sent after editing should be considered as approved.

How To Manage Stitches Post-Surgery?

How To Manage Stitches Post-Surgery?

Any surgery that requires an incision will involve sutures or staples as the last step of the procedure. This helps close the incision and keep out infections. Taking care of your stitches can help limit scarring and discomfort and speed up the healing process. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

  1. Keep it clean and dry: For the first few days, use a washed wet cloth to clean the incision site. After a few days, you may start washing the area with soap and water unless advised else wise by your doctor. Ensure that you dry the skin thoroughly after washing it. Avoid baths that involve soaking the area in water. Also, avoid swimming. Do not use any powders, lotions, creams, deodorants etc on the wound site.
  2. Look out for signs of infections: Avoid activities that may involve exposing your wound to dirty water, chemicals, dust etc. This increases your risk of infections. Also look out for signs f infections such as redness, swelling, pus or bleeding, fever or increased pain from the wound. In case you notice such signs, consult your doctor at the earliest.
  3. Do not scratch: As it heals, your skin is likely to turn itchy. However, refrain from scratching so as to reduce chances of infections. Do not try and pull away from the scab but let it fall off on its own. This will also help limit scarring.
  4. Limit contact: Avoid wearing tight clothes or anything that sticks to the skin while your wound is healing. Instead have plenty of loose, comfortable clothes easily accessible. Also, do not take part in close contact sports such as football etc until the stitches have healed completely.
  5. Change your dressing regularly: A dressing should be changed as soon as it gets wet or soaked with blood or other body fluids. Wear clean medical gloves while changing a dressing. When putting on a new dressing do not touch the inside of the dressing or apply any creams on the stitches unless advised so by your doctor. In the case of removable stitches, the doctor will usually remove the stitches after a few days. DO not attempt to pull the stitches out on your own.
  6. Avoid exposing the wound to sunlight: New skin that forms as the incision heals is very sensitive to sunlight and gets sunburnt very easily. Limiting your exposure to sunlight can help reduce the effects of scarring.

Vaginal Fungal Infection - The Best Way You Can Deal With It!

In case you are having repeating infections or issues disposing of an infection with ordinary treatment, then an alternate form of Candida may be the cause. A lab test can tell your doctor which sort of Candida you have. Here are a few ways with which you can deal with vaginal fungal infections:

Simple infections
For simple fungal infections, your specialist will mostly recommend the following treatment(s):

Complicated infections
Certain types of Candida will not react to simple treatment and will require a more forceful strategy. In case you meet one of the following criteria, your specialist will more likely tell you that your fungal infection is an extreme one.

Conceivable medications for extreme or complicated vaginal fungal infections include:

  1. 14-day cream, balm, tablet, or suppository vaginal treatment
  2. A few measures of fluconazole (Diflucan)
  3. Long-term medicine of fluconazole (Diflucan) that is taken once a week for six weeks.
  4. Treatment of your sexual partner or use of condoms while having intercourse.

You can treat vaginal fungal infections with regular cures in case that you might want to abstain from taking physician-recommended medicine. These are some mainstream normal cures:

  1. Tea tree oil cream
  2. Garlic or boric acid vaginal balms
  3. Plain yoghurt taken orally or applied into the vagina

Here are some normal strategies for counteractive action:

  1. Abstain from wearing tight jeans, underwear, tights, or stockings
  2. Abstain from utilising female antiperspirant or antiperspirant tampons or cushions

Prostate Biopsies - Ways You Can Avoid It!

Urologist
Urologist, Gurgaon
Prostate Biopsies - Ways You Can Avoid It!

One of the most common issues with old age in men is the enlarged prostate. Any difficulty with urination (no constant stream, difficulty initiating, or incomplete emptying of the bladder for instance), and the first suspect is an enlarged prostate. These symptoms are followed by a digital rectal exam to check for an enlarged prostate. Once confirmed, the next step is to check for levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). If both the exam and the PSA are positive, it could mean prostate cancer. As with any cancer, it is believed that sooner it is diagnosed and the treatment is started, the better.

Historically, the best way to rule out the prostate cancer had been to do a prostate biopsy. This is a minor invasive procedure, wherein biopsies are taken from various regions of the prostate which are known to develop cancer (about 12). A disadvantage of this procedure includes missing out on the front part of the prostate which can also develop cancer. Secondly, it is not a very pleasant experience and given a chance, most men would not want to have it done.

There is good news for these men who would like to avoid prostate biopsies. The first is the multiparametric MRI which uses no x-rays and is considered very safe with extremely accurate results. This MRI exam requires about an hour, and once the images are obtained, the doctor will analyse these images and check for several parameters to assess for prostate cancer. The absence of cancer can be confirmed with up to 90% accuracy, which is far greater than with usual biopsies. If there is a possibility of cancer, then a biopsy can be done to confirm it.

Also, these images indicate the exact region where cancer likely is, and this guides the doctor to biopsy only where absolutely essential. The chances of false positive and false negative results are reduced drastically. The one disadvantage here is that MRI detected biopsies usually tend to be of a higher grade which requires immediate treatment.

Another way to reduce chances of the biopsy by 30% to 50% is by the 4K test. It helps detect a variety of prostate issues including cancer. It can be used once higher levels of PSA is identified and before going for a biopsy. It combined 4 prostate-specific biomarkers with clinical information to accurately provide men with a risk of developing prostate cancer. It can be used even after negative biopsies to confirm the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

These two measures can drastically reduce the incidence of prostate biopsies, which is neither pleasant for the patient nor very effective for the doctor.

Hi Sir, my age 19 sir me black hu Kya ap mujhe koi gora hone wali medicine bata sakte hai please help me sir.

Hi Sir, my age 19 sir me black hu Kya ap mujhe koi gora hone wali medicine bata sakte hai please help me sir.
First of all, I want to tell you to embrace your dark skin. Its beautiful and many people find it attractive these days! But if you really want to lighten your skin, there are lots of options you can try. Avoiding too much sun exposure is the best place to start. Typically, the skin darkens when exposed to sunlight because it produces a substance, called melanin, to protect itself from the harmful solar radiation. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes, and skin. And the more melanin your skin makes, the darker your skin becomes. Its also great to use sunscreen every time you go outside. As far as lightening products, you can try creams and soaps that contain kojic acid, glutathione, aplha-arbutin, licorice extract, mulberry extract, and Vitamins C, E, and B3. You can also go for lightening creams containing hydroquinone, but make sure that the concentration does not exceed to 2%.Only use products that contain 4% hydroquinone if its prescribed by your dermatologist; and make sure to follow the instructions strictly as wrong use of these products can cause serious complications. If you wd like to go for a more natural approach, you can try lemons. Just get a piece of fresh lemon, squeeze the juice, dip a cotton ball into the juice, apply it on your face, then rinse off after 10-15 minutes. If you do not have a lemon, try potato. The procedure is almost the same. Peel the potato, cut it into small pieces, then apply the juice on areas you wish to lighten. Just keep in mind, though, that the effectiveness of the treatments mentioned depends largely on your skin problem and skin type. Some products and procedures may work, but some may not. Its best to consult your dermatologist to find out which of these options is best for your skin type.

Hi sir,
I need a small clarification regarding scar ointment to apply on my forehead due to 6 stitches on my forehead...
Hello sir. The scar ointment itself helps in bringing back the skin colour texture and surface to the normal level. And let the scar mature, atleast till 4-6 months. Even then if its in different pigmentation then we can go for other ointments.
