Liposuction: Do's And Don'ts

Liposuction: Do's And Don'ts

Liposuction is very popular as a relatively quick and safe cosmetic surgery to get rid of excess fat. At one time, the procedure was even touted as a better alternative to healthy diet and exercise. Regardless of such myths, liposuction is an important development in cosmetic surgery. Indeed in certain cases (of extreme weight gain) liposuction is the first surgical procedure performed on the patient. Like all surgeries, liposuction has a few do's and don'ts, and they are:

Do's

  1. Keep your weight at a healthy level before surgery. The more the amount of fat is removed from your body, the greater is the risk involved in surgery, which is why controlling your weight pre surgery is important. Losing a large amount of weight leaves a lot of loose skin in your body, which can make your skin look saggy.
  2. Wear your compression garments. Compression garments help your skin compress over the area where the fat used to be, leaving smooth, tight skin.
  3. Continue exercising (with the go ahead of your doctor) after the procedure and follow a healthy diet to maintain your body.
  4. Maintain gentle activity for two weeks after the procedure. This will help in removing fluid deposition in the surgical area and prevent complications.

Don'ts

  1. Do not take anti inflammatory medicines like aspirin or ibuprofen as these medicines may cause bleeding complications. They also harm the body's immune system, which is detrimental to recovery.
  2. Do not smoke or drink while recovering as Nicotine disturbs normal skin growth, which may lead to permanent scars, while alcohol interferes with the effect of some medicines.
  3. Don't lift heavy objects or bend down immediately after the surgery. Your doctor will give you a more specific timeline as to when you can pursue such activities.
  4. Don't expect results from day one. You will see results after you have recovered from the surgery.
  5. Do not opt for liposuction specifically for weight loss. Liposuction is chiefly a procedure for shaping and contouring the fat in your body to give you that shape you always desired. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dermatologist and ask a free question.

The Diabetes-Depression Connection

MD - Diabetology, MBBS
Diabetologist, Surat
The Diabetes-Depression Connection

According to most experts, Depression and Diabetes have been intricately connected in a vicious cycle. While the prolonged and sustaining nature of diabetes directly makes one vulnerable to the bouts of depression, doctors tend to locate traces of depression in the family history of an individual in order to diagnose the roots of diabetes. It won't be too far-fetched to state that both causes as well as affects the other.

If you have diabetes, either type 1 or type 2, you have an increased risk of developing depression. And if you're depressed, you may have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that diabetes and depression can be treated together. And effectively managing one can have a positive effect on the other.

How Diabetes and Depression Correlated?
There are myriad ways in which diabetes affects depression and vice versa.

Firstly, tackling such a long drawn disease and its various pitfalls might cause a lot of anxiety to one and lead to depression. Whereas on the other hand, depression reduces the zeal to live and thus results in poor lifestyle choices which in turn causes weight gain, unhealthy food habits, physical inactivity. As we are well aware, all these have the potential to wreak havoc for any patient of diabetes.

Similarly, diabetes ushers in various other health complications, adversely impacting one's productivity. This may cause depression in a lot of people.

On the flipside, depression impedes one's ability and enthusiasm to work or communicate, this in turn intervenes with one's monitoring of diabetes. Since these two extremely malevolent diseases have such close connections, medical science recommends ways to grapple with both. The rigors of managing diabetes can be stressful and lead to symptoms of depression.

Diabetes can cause complications and health problems that may worsen symptoms of depression.

Depression affects your ability to perform tasks, communicate and think clearly. This can interfere with your ability to successfully manage diabetes.

Treatment: Depression is just like any other illness, it can be treated. Treatment can lift the depression and improve diabetes control.

Looking after your diabetes will help decrease the risk of getting depression. If you already have depression, good diabetes management will help lessen the negative impacts it can have. Depression is no different to any of the other complication of diabetes. It is a genuine illness for which you need to seek help and support from health professionals.

The treatment for depression and diabetes involves a coordinated approach that monitors both diabetes control and the symptoms of depression. It is about finding the treatment that works best for each person. For example, people with diabetes and mild depression may find that regular physical activity improves depressed moods and also helps control blood glucose levels.

Helping Yourself.

If you suspect you might have depression, take control of your health by:

  • Going to a doctor or other health professional
  • Getting involved in social activities
  • Engaging in regular moderate physical activity
  • Learning about depression and diabetes
  • Very particular about medicines prescribed for Diabetes
  • Eating healthily and including a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • Achieving and maintaining healthy weight
  • Limiting your alcohol intake
  • Getting help, support and encouragement from family and friends
  • Asking your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Can I have fish oil capsules after having chicken or mutton? No problem? Or any side effects?
Fish oil is rich in Vitamin A and D. If you have good balanced diet, there is no possibility of vitamin deficiency and as such it is not needed to consume additional vitamins particularly A and D as these are fat soluble vitamins stored in the body and their excess has got toxic effects.

Please note that luke warm water is not required in early/morning. A cup of coffee/tea is ok. She needs to do morning walk at least 30 -40 minutes daily. A balance diet and seasonal fruit is must daily. A good sleep - prior to that meditation is required. Give her Kali phos 6x 4 tabs thrice daily along with the medicine for high blood pressure only. Continue treatment.

I have taken Vitamin D3 at evening. Is it true that vitamins not function after evening?
Hi lybrate-user, That's another myth that vitamins don't functions after any time. Our human body is really smart and capable of doing many things. Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids so just keep in mind that have it with a meal which contains fat. For example - Boiled eggs, omellete etc! Thank you!

Many persons may be underweight simply because of their genetic makeup. Others may be underweight because of other factors such as eating less or taking a diet insufficient in nutrients. There are a few medical conditions that make a person lose weight and fall in the underweight category. These medical conditions include IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), tuberculosis, crohn’s disease, and liver problems. A person who is stressed or depressed may also lose weight. A person suffering cancer of any organ also tends to lose a lot of body weight.Being underweight makes a person prone to lowered immunity. A weak immune system increases the risk of recurrent infections. Anaemia, tiredness, hair loss, weak bones, osteoporosis are other negative outcomes of being underweight. In women, being underweight puts you at a greater risk of amenorrhea, difficulty in getting pregnant and complications during pregnancy. Natural Homeopathic medicines with zero side-effects are extremely helpful for persons looking to gain weight. Homeopathy offers a wide range of medicines that can help underweight persons gain weight in a healthy way. The selection of Homeopathic medicines for gaining weight is based on individual case presentation. The medicines help gain weight while at the same time building immunity.Homeopathic medicines work by correcting the underlying medical condition that has caused the weight loss, thereby improving the overall health condition of the person concerned. Consult for detailed evaluation of your case.

Hi Mr. lybrate-user, Primarily Homeopaths ascertain health status by symptoms, and not all doctor do that only. I will examine as any allopath do. We send patient to investigations as needed (any lab or radiology). Medicine is an art, every doctor will have his own style in due course. At the end patient has to weigh the results given by the doctor only.
