6 Symptoms Of Gender Identity Disorder

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS

6 Symptoms Of Gender Identity Disorder

Born as a male but feel like a female OR born as a female but feel like a male. Some persons are unable to feel comfortable in the physical gender that they are born in; their mind, brain, feeling and thoughts are all of the opposite sex. This uncomfortableness in their mind about their physical gender is termed as Gender Identity Disorder.

What's the cause?

We do not know the exact cause of this disorder, but it is hypothesized that developmental changes in the brain and the body do not sync, and the brain/mind is left with a different gender than the body. This is mostly an unidentifiable and unpredictable change.

What are the symptoms?

1. Children might express a desire to dress up as the opposite sex.
2. They might express replusion at one's own sex organs/genitals.
3. As adolescence begins, they do not develop feelings of attraction towards members of the opposite sex. Some complain of revulsion about their pubertal changes.
4. Males want to pee while sitting down, while females want to do it standing up.
5. Their behavior is often more like that of the opposite sex, e.g. boys might display feminine gestures, while girls might indulge in risk taking and reckless behavior.
6. As they become adult, a realisation that they are stuck in a body that they do not like causes depression and anxiety.

Diagnosis:

A diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is made based on a detailed assessment by a Psychiatrist, who is specially trained in this assessment. WPATH standards mandate that this is an ongoing assessment, and involves facilitating the process of Hormonal Treatment and eventual Sex Reassignment Surgery. The whole process can take 2-3 years.

Treatment:

For those who have severe GID, eventual sex reassignment surgery is the treatment and outcome. However, support of family, friends and a Good Psychiatrist can enable a smooth transition. Psychiatrists will often use antidepressants and anxiolytics to make it easier for the person to cope with societal and family pressures. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Can one stop taking 12.5 mg atenolol if taken for anxiety. Does stopping it suddenly cause any side effects.
Atenolol is not a drug for Anxiety. Its Propranolol that is useful for the physical components of anxiety reponses (trembling, quivering of voice etc). Ability to act on Beta 2 receptors gives it the above utility, while atenolol is only active on B1 receptiors. Moreover, Atenolol does not cross blood brain barrier so I do not see the merit of it here. As for Sudden Withdrawal of Medication- Yes, typically B Blockers like Atenolol etc are not to be stopped abruptly. They can lead to increased heart rate, palpitations etc due to the upregulated B receptors. That said, Atenolol at 12. 5 mg may be stopped abruptly as it is a very low dose. Ofcourse, cannot comment on how the condition for which it may have been prescribed and its worsening but otherwise maybe safely stopped. Suggest see your doctor, or setup an appointment with me for me to better be able to guide you.

Hello sir, my uncle is suffering from jaundice from 3 more years, he takes continuously 3 months alcohol ,later he stopped, and then he again started, recently he has 1.5 bilirubin and he is too much fat 115 kg, and his age is 39 only, please suggest us how to control him out of wine?

PGDPC, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Durgapur
First & most important thing is to stop alcohol. He may need to stay in a rehabilitation cum deaddiction centre. Before that, consult a gastroenterologist for complete liver check up and control of bilirubin level. Take it seriously. Good luck.

Dear lybrate-user, Thanks for reaching out. Low heart rate and feelings of dizziness is unlikely to be associated with relapse of anxiety disorder. Anxiety will usually lead to higher heart rate rather than low. The fact that you are concerned about the corelation is a normal anxiety which anyone would have. That said, yes low heart rate can be due to tebormin, which contains atenolol. I am not sure why it was added as a medication for raised BP, because its usually not the first choice. There could also be other reasons like some cardiac issue or simple dehydration. Would need to get a thorough history to advice on specifics. Suggest you see a doctor or set up an appointment with me on Lybrate. I will be happy to help.

I was suffering from depression since last 4-5 years. And I consulted psychiatrist who gave me medicines (medha vati ayurvedic, neurons kind lc allopathy, natrum muriaticum Kali phosphoricum in homeopathy) which were very helpful. Now I feel quite good. I am preparing for Ssc exams ,but I live along with my parents in home. They don't understand me and my situation and keep on pinching me on every single thing.(sometimes on marks sometimes on room condition etc etc) I feel very depressed due to all these things. Which makes me feel that I cannot qualify any exams.(I start loosing confidence on every single thing).

Dear lybrate-user, I cannot approve or disprove of the ayurvedic medicines you mentioned but I can say that a psychiatrist would certainly never prescribe you these except nurokind lc. I see that you are distressed and unsure of what is going on. A detailed conversation and guidance is required by a specialist. Please visit a qualified psychiatrist in your area or setup an Appointment with me over Lybrate at the earliest.
