An average person experiences two fractures during his or her lifetime and same holds true for joint related injuries. The severity of this condition depends on a number of factors, ranging from the forces responsible for injury and location to the damage done to the nearby tissues and bones.

How age plays a role in your chances of getting a fracture?

Your risk and severity of developing a fracture, depends, to a certain extent on your age.

A very common occurrence during childhood is crippling joint related injuries, the fractures that you tend to have during this time are generally less complex than the broken bone instances that you stand to experience when you enter adulthood.

With time, your bones become fragile and you become prone to broken bones sustained from falls, which you wouldn't when you were young. Furthermore, as you step into your 50th year, you can get struck by the bone condition osteoporosis, a leading cause of bone fractures during this time. For women, menopause makes them more susceptible to osteoporosis (as infrequent periods and hormonal changes at this time lead to loss of bone mass) and subsequently broken bones.

Preventing crippling joint injuries need many steps in younger generation known as prehab especially for sporting population and adult population involved in day to day activities requiring your body getting subjected to physical stress.

Simple steps to get your joints back to normal in case you do get into injuries.

  • Having a calcium and vitamin d rich diet to strengthen bones
  • Exercising to strengthen bone and muscle health as well as your balance
  • Taking relevant medicines to make your bones strong
  • Going for timely bone mineral density test to determine the health of your bone
  • Exposing yourself to the sun for about 20 minutes everyday
  • Having a requisite calcium intake of 1000 mg and 1200 mg for pre- and postmenopausal women respectively
  • Preventing a fracture by modification in your household furniture, extra clothings, sometimes addition of simple orthotic devices, improving your muscle reaction time etc go in long way to help prevent falls.

I got my ankle twisted on 5th october. The x-ray showed no bone fracture and the doctor said its a ligament injury. I was having a temporary plaster for 7 days. After that I used crap bandage to walk. But then also I was having pain so consulted another doctor and he put an ankle cast for 15 days then also I didn't got any relief. So I consulted another doctor in my hometown so he told me to cut the cast and start physiotherapy. Its been almost 2 weeks of therapy. I hav some relief but I still didn't got that confidence of being fine. I am totally confused right now. I don't know how much more time it will take.

Please don't get confused. 1. Your present line of treatment is correct continue with physiotherapy AND add treatment below. 2. Take Ultrasound therapy 1 MHz, 1.2 W/cm2, 6 min 3. Contrast bath 2 times a day. {ask your physio a method} 4. Wear ankle support. 5. Elevate your leg while sleep with pillow beneath. 6. Don't do exercise which is painful. 7. Be patients because ligament injury takes time to heal. Hope to get will soon.

Hi, ankle pain maybe due to various issues. Get a X-ray ankle done to find out for any bone or ligament problem. Sometimes ankle pain may occur due to sprains that took place unknowingly. Ligaments that are attached to the ankle either tear partially, or fully rupture. The overall pain experienced depends on the severity of the injury, yet home remedies can reduce the amount of pain and discomfort you feel. Here are 5 home remedies for you to reduce pain and discomfort on your ankle: 1. Icing: your ankle may respond better to an alternating hot-and-cold therapy. Use two gel packs. One should apply heat for 20 minutes. Follow it with a cold pack for 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can prepare ice packs by filling a gallon-sized Ziploc with fresh ice. Apply the ice pack on your swelling ankle to reduce the amount of swelling will reduce your discomfort. Ensure that the ice rests directly on the swollen area. If the cold is too intense, place a small rag between the skin and the ice pack. 2. Herbal Remedies: Home remedies such as coconut and garlic oil help reduce pain and swelling when they soak directly into the skin. Mix 3 table spoon of coconut and garlic oil into a container and heat in the microwave for ten seconds, slightly warming the mixture. Generously massage the oil directly onto your ankle for ten minutes, allowing the oils to soak into your skin. Cabbage contains minerals and vitamins that are useful when ingested, as well as when they’re applied externally. Gather the outer layers, or leaves, of the cabbage plant. Blanch the leaves by boiling them in water and then immediately placing the leaves into a container of ice-cold water. Once the leaves have been blanched, wrap your entire foot and ankle, and allow them to rest for 30 minutes before removing. 3. Dieting: Changing your diet to relieve ankle pain can be effective over a longer term. If you are heavy, you may experience poor circulation and heightened stress in the ankles and other weight-bearing joints. If you are overweight and suffer from frequent strains or bone degeneration, losing weight can permanently end your ankle pain. Adding a joint supplement to your diet, such as glucosamine or chondroitin, may also help some people by protecting the ankle joint and surrounding tissue. 4. Exercises: Exercise is an ongoing home treatment that will serve as pain relief and prevention. To prevent future ankle injuries, and to strengthen an ankle that is already injured, range-of-motion exercises and stretches provide the most benefit. Only stretch or exercise the ankle once the pain has subsided. Range-of-motion exercises will increase the flexibility of tendons and ligaments that have tightened during an injury. Trace the alphabet with your toes, moving the ankle as much as possible throughout. Repeat at least ten times per day to strengthen your ankle and improve your flexibility. Hope this helps. Stop rubbing any oil on that area. You can apply ice. Meet a physiotherapist nearby you. You will definitely get relief after few sessions of physiotherapy. Use that band only when you are riding your bike and avoid lifting weight with your affected hand.

Hair Transplant - All You Should Know About It?

As the name suggests, hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are moved from one body part, the donor site, to a balding part of the body, the recipient site. Male pattern baldness can be primarily treated using this technique. Hair transplantation procedures can be used for restoration of a bald scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, chest hair, pubic hair, beard hair, and to fill in surgery or accident scars etc.

Procedures of Hair Transplant
Hair transplantation is very different from hair grafting. Modern hair transplantation methods can be used to achieve the natural hair appearance because the original hair orientation can be mimicked. The various procedures involved in hair transplant procedures are-

Pre operative planning: The scalp or the target area of the patient is analysed. Pre-operative folliscopy is carried out to determine the hair density which helps to assess the post-operative results of the transplant. Patients are advised to refrain from taking any sort of medicine prior to the procedure as it might result in intra-operative bleeding thereby causing poor grafting. Patients are also asked to avoid alcohol and smoking because they can have a negative impact on the survival of the grafts.

Harvesting: The procedure for transplant is usually performed undermild sedation of local anaesthesia. The scalp is shampooed thoroughly and then treated with antibacterial agents before the donor scalp is harvested. There are various different hair harvesting techniques, each having its advantages and disadvantages. There are two major ways of extracting donor grafts-

  1. Strip harvesting- This is usually the most common technique, where the surgeon removes a strip of the skin from the back of the scalp where the hair growth is good. This leaves a thin scar on the donor area. This strip is then grafted to the required balding area of the scalp.
  2. Follicular unit extraction (FUE)- In this kind of harvesting, individual follicular units consisting of a group of 1 to 4 hairs are removed under local anaesthesia. This is a fairly lengthy procedure but gives natural-looking results.
  3. Follicular unit transplant- This is the traditional method for hair transplantation in which a strip of hair is extracted and the strip is then dissected in order to separate individual grafts.
  4. Robotic hair restoration- A robotic hair restoration device is used which utilizes cameras and robotic arms to assist the surgeon in the FUE procedure.

Types of Surgeries
Hair transplant surgery can be of many types including

  • Androgenic alopecia- treating permanent hair loss
  • Eyebrow transplant
  • Frontal lowering of hair- natural high hairlines without any hair loss condition.

In case donor hair numbers are insufficient, body hair transplant can also be used. However, it is very important to assess the natural difference in colour and texture between the body hair and scalp hair.

If you have leg pain then you have to rule out the casues for having leg pain. First of all check your weight and your haemoglobin levels, as Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there are no issues with the knee joint or back pain. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired that can also be reason to have frequent sprains in the leg once the oxygen levels in the blood comes down it automatically leads to improper functioning of the joints and muscles and that also might make the hip muscles to become tired thereby straining mildly might lead to waist / hip pain.

Is Chikungunya Causing You Joint Pains? Manage It With Ayurveda!

Mosquitoes, though tiny, can wreak havoc on the human health. Malaria and dengue were common enough, but now another disease doing the rounds is chikungunya. This is a viral disease that spreads by the bites of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The disease lasts for 5 to 7 days and the catch is that there is no identified cure for the disease.

Symptoms of chikungunya are very non-indicative and include high temperature, rashes and multiple spots on the body, multiple joint pains, headaches, conjunctivitis and insomnia. The presence of joint pains associated with a high incidence of mosquito breeding is indicative of chikungunya. The fever usually subsides in a couple of days, but the other symptoms would persist for about a week.

Management of chikungunya includes a combination of prevention and treatment. Prevention is more important than treatment as it is easier done.

  1. To the maximum extent possible, avoid mosquito bites.
  2. Avoid using rain water-filled containers, potted plants that stagnate water and drinking bowls for domestic animals.
  3. Wear full-sleeved clothing when mosquito bites are likely to be higher.
  4. Use mosquito repellents in the forms of coils, creams, and mats
  5. Use mosquito nets where possible
  6. Prevent mosquito breeding by draining possible areas of water stagnation

Treatment: There is no specific allopathic remedy for the treatment of chikungunya. The prescribed medicines are only for symptomatic relief, and given the intense and prolonged joint pains, the patient ends up using a lot of pain killers. There are cases where the pains may persist for up to 6 months. This is where Ayurveda comes into the picture, as there are multiple effective remedies that have been proven effective over the ages.

  1. Massage your joints with a mixture of castor oil, drumstick, camphor, garlic, and coconut oil. This oil can be heated and stored in a glass jar for about 3 days. Warm this oil and use it for effective relief of the joint pains.
  2. A mixture of castor oil and cinnamon can also be used to massage the painful joints.
  3. A concoction of ajwain seeds, raisins or dry grapes, tulsi leaves, and neem leaves boiled in water is an effective remedy for the joint pains. This is to be used when it is warm after food and the residual ingredients chewed upon.
  4. A diet rich in fresh fruits, greens and vegetables is highly recommended.
  5. Drinking sufficient amounts of liquids (water, coconut water, lime juice, and buttermilk) to keep good hydration levels and recuperate from the illness.
  6. Ensure sufficient rest for the joints even after the initial fever has subsided.

Ayurveda has references to something called “sandhijwara” which is “fever of the joints”. Sandhijwara is very similar to chikungunya and these remedies used for this can be very useful in treating chikungunya.

Speed: Within a fraction of a second, the pulsed light of a laser can simultaneously treat many hair follicles. It can treat small areas such as the upper lip within a minute, whereas it can take about 1/2 hour to treat the back or the legs.
  3. Effectiveness: The unwanted hair follicles are removed permanently during sessions at intervals of three to seven weeks.

How to prepare for it? 

Lasers should generally be performed under supervision of qualified dermatologists who also have additional specialised qualifications and understanding of laser physics. It is always best to meticulously check the track record of the doctor and the technicians performing these procedures. Six weeks prior to the laser hair reduction procedure, you need to stop waxing, plucking and electrolysis. Avoid a tan six weeks prior to treatment since it is difficult for laser light to pass through pigmented skin.

Expected treatment

Prior to the treatment, the targeted hairs will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the surface of your skin. Your dermatologist will adjust the laser parameters using the onboard computer to exactly match the targeted hair roots. For protecting the outer layers of your skin, a cold gel is applied. Painless pulses of light are then applied to the target areas till the complete desired area is treated. For the chin or underarms, this requires just a couple of minutes. You may feel a bit of warmth when light touches your skin but this is not uncomfortable. Ice packs are applied after the procedure to sooth your skin. The next session is taken up normally after two to four weeks.

Potential side effects

  1. Irritation of skin associated with redness, swelling or discomfort, which subside within a few hours of the treatment.
  2. Temporary pigmentary changes may be observed, such as darkening or lightening.
  3. Underlying hormonal issues can be a cause for unsatisfactory improvement and this should be checked by your gynaecologist or endocrinologist.

  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrom is a painful condition of the foot caused by pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. This nerve passes along a passage called the tarsal tunnel just below the bony bit on the foot.
  • Symptoms include pain which is often described as a burning pain radiating into the arch of the foot, heel and the toes. Pins and needles or numbness may be felt in the sole of the foot. Pain may be worse when running or standing for long periods of time and often worse at night. Sometimes it is initially mistaken for plantar fascitis which also causes pain from the inside heel and throughout the arch of the foot.

Castor oil is safe for using in eye lashes. But use good quality genuine oil. Adding few drops of vit E will give good results. Comb lashes with a fine brush. You will feel blurring of vision after applying it. But it will goes off.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is painful inflammatory condition associated with stiffness and loss of motion in shoulder. The pain gradually grows and becomes chronic leading to restricted movement. Due to inflammatory conditions the muscles surrounding the shoulder becomes stiff. Frozen shoulder has vague triggers, which usually surfaces as a complication commonly in people with diabetes, thyroid disorders, heart disease, and Parkinson's disease and people with chronic rheumatism or arthritis. The general approach towards frozen shoulder is prescription of painkillers, anti-inflammatory and physical therapy to restore the ROM.

What is the suffering 
As the chronicity advances the movement of the shoulder is severely restricted, with progressive loss of both active and passive range of motion. The condition is sometimes caused by injury, leading to lack of use due to pain, but can also arise spontaneously with no obvious trigger (idiopathic frozen shoulder). Rheumatic disease progression and recent shoulder surgery can also cause a pattern of pain and limitation similar to frozen shoulder. Intermittent periods of use may cause inflammation.

In frozen shoulder, the synovial fluid becomes scarce resulting in diminished joint lubrication between the head of humerus (Upper arm bone) and the socket of the scapula. Due to friction as precipitating factor, the shoulder capsule swells, thickens and tightens due to stiffness of ligamentous bands of scar tissue. As a result, the joint movement becomes stiff.

How to know 
First sign of a frozen shoulder is that the joint becomes so tight and stiff that it is nearly impossible to carry out simple movements, such as raising the arm. The movement that is most severely inhibited is abduction and external rotation of the shoulder. Lots of tests are done clinically to assess the frozen shoulder. One of the best test is “Scratch Test” and 2nd is the Lateral external rotation.

People complain that the stiffness and pain worsen at night or the pain is worse during morning. Pain due to frozen shoulder is usually dull or aching. It can be worsened with attempted motion. A therapist or practitioner may suspect the patient has a frozen shoulder if a physical examination reveals limited shoulder movement. XRay of rhe shoulder or an MRI scan may confirm the diagnosis, though its mostly diagnosed clinically.

The frozen shoulder, according to the chronicity is categorised into stages.

Stage one:  "freezing" or painful stage, which may last from six weeks to nine months, and in which the patient has a slow onset of pain. As the pain worsens, the shoulder loses range of motion.
Stage two: "frozen" or adhesive stage is marked by a slow improvement in pain but the stiffness increases. This stage generally lasts from four to nine months.
Stage three: "thawing" or recovery, when shoulder motion slowly returns toward normal. This generally lasts from 5 to 26 months.

What to Do

Frozen shoulder makes the person so disable that he cannot work without pain. Management of the frozen shoulder is focused on restoring joint movement and reducing shoulder pain, involving medications, physical therapy and /or surgical intervention. Treatment may continue for months, there is no strong evidence to favour any particular approach. Medications frequently used include NSAIDs and corticosteroids. Alternative medicines like homeopathy, ayurveda also gives great results. Alternative measures like physical therapy, exercise therapy, yoga have good impact in increasing the range of motion.

I am 35 m, for mitral valve prolapse and sinus tachycardia taking telday M50 from 5 years. No complains about this at all. My last year blood report showed RA factor little higher but when I showed it to RA doc, he told me I have anxiety only and RA is not issue in my case so all is fine and I never worried ABT that. Then, from last few days I feel some kind of strange blunt pain at back of head which made me feel about if I have something in brain but as because of previous experiences I took as it's anxiety as no other symptoms like blur vision or slur speech or no omit. However, whenever I pump air into tyres .for pumping need to use right leg. Them surely after some time I get pain in hip which makes me harder to get up but I do anyways and it stays for 3-4 days and comes normal then. I am active, 35 yrs, 77 kg yes such normal activities like pumping air can make hip pain. Exactly where vertebrates ends. How to stop this rather get flexible with it.

It looks like you are anaemic. If you have back pain after you sit for long hours then it is due to your haemoglobin levels as it is important to check that. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back / leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. If you have leg pain then you have to rule out the casues for having leg pain. If not if the pain radiates down the back of thigh and legs then it might be due to sciatica. Kindly consult the nearby physiotherapist. Hope you recover soon from the leg pain. And also should check whether you have flat foot on the right leg that also might be the reason to have pain in one particular leg Pain in the left side of the leg/thigh The compression of the sciatic nerve should be around the right side that's the reason you have pain in the left side. That's the reason you cannot sit or stand and it is exactly around the L5 vertebrae where the sciatic nerve passes by.
