Dear Lybrate User, the pain in the jaw could be due to a lot of reasons including decayed teeth, gum and bone infections, muscle and joint stiffness. In your case, there might be an underlying decay that has evaded your eyes and only a dentist can visually inspect the region. Or there could be a gum infection. You must visit a dentist at the earliest to seek complete relief from your symptoms. All the best!

As per your description of symptoms you have cavity that should be removed by a dentist and get the filling done. It might be a case of RCT but then first get a checkup done for the concerned tooth.

First you should describe whether the gap is localised or generalised. But as you mentioned that you broke your tooth and so the gap is there I think it is localised. You can get the space filled by capping or a bridge whichever suits your condition. Get a checkup done by a dental surgeon.

Hello As per your dental history I can just predict that there might be any underlying cause for this swelling of gum. Please mention whether the swelling is generalised or localised. If localised then it may be due to abscess/pus that can be cured by draining the pus and taking antibiotics course under supervision of a dental practitioner.

Dear Lybrate User, It's hard to know that the patient requires a Root Canal Treatment. But now that you know of it, do not delay in getting the treatment initiated by a General Dentist or even an Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist). Root Canal Treatment is a very simple procedure that every qualified dentist can perform. Only in cases of complex situations, a specialist's help is sought (Endodontist). Good luck!

Deviated nasal septum is the most common. One should wait for the surgery until necessary. In my view mouth breathers rarely have bad smell. But still you can try mouthwash with a diluted betaine solution, use tongue scrapper, and also go for scaling. I hope the results are gonna be positive.

HI Lybrate USER, unless we know your age and position were you are having pain or sour gums its hardly possible to know the reason of the condition why it happened, it might be due to trauma while eating, ulcer, improper brushing technique, poor oral hygiene, so kindly provide detail but without examining practically hard to say, I can suggest some oral habit maintenance: 1. Brush twice, Make sure you clean your tongue while brushing2. Use regular mouth wash every night before sleep 3. Pls do use floss. 4. Consume water frequently for every 2 hours, rinse your mouth after having food and check the outcome in a month. And do visit your dentist for regular check up.

Implants - Which Type Is Right For You?

Implants - Which Type Is Right For You?

Tooth loss is a challenge for both the patient and the dentist. Patient has to deal with reduced chewing efficiency and altered appearance. The dentist, on the contrary, is faced with restoring the lost tooth to the maximum natural extent possible - functionally and structurally.

The fixed dentures came close with their ability to providing fixed teeth that were stable and aesthetically appealing. However, there was one big disadvantage. The adjacent teeth that were being used as abutment were reduced in size and therefore strength though they could be perfectly normal teeth. In an effort to avoid this, the dental community started looking at options, the result of which was implant. Not just replacing the crown part of the tooth, even the root portion of the tooth is replaced here.

A biocompatible material, titanium, is put into the tooth to serve as the root. Titanium is strong, light, biocompatible (does not cause autoimmune reactions in the surrounding tissues) and most importantly osseointegrated (fuses to the surrounding bone). Once placed as the root, it gets absorbed into the bone after a period of about 2 to 6 months. Then, a crown or a denture is literally built on this root to simulate the natural appearance as close as possible. This provides not just the complete natural tooth structure but also provides support to the surrounding tissues like the gums and the cheeks.

Implant dentistry is a perfect example of teamwork including surgeons to operate and place the bone, prosthodontists to do the crown or the bridge, a periodontist to manage the gums health, and a lab technician who can do the finest job on the crowns or the bridges.

Types of implants: Three common types include:

  1. Single tooth replacement: In cases where a single tooth is lost, the implant would be one root that is allowed to fuse to the bone and then a crown is placed over it.
  2. Fixed multiple teeth replacements: If more than one tooth is lost, then bridges are fabricated by placing one or more implants and then custom-made crowns are placed over these implants.
  3. Removable implant supported complete denture: If all the lower teeth are missing, implants could be placed at pre-identified locations and then a complete denture fabricated over it. This is commonly done in lower jaws as stability is always a cause for concern.

Contraindications: The success of the implant requires good bone health. The most common contraindications would be patients with chronic diseases like poorly controlled diabetes, cancer in the line of jaws, chronic smoking, or poor periodontal health.

However, if managed well, even these patients can have implants after a detailed assessment by the dental team. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

The “blue” or often times “grey” appearance of a stain under or at the edge of a crown usually indicates microleakage or bacteria/decay that has seeped under the edges of the crown. You really should have it replaced before it extends further underneath the crown. If there was a root canal on that tooth, the discoloration along the gum could be the root discoloration from an old root canal which is absolutely normal. The discoloration can also be due to the metal showing through the crown if your dentist made you a porcelain fused to metal crown. If so, I would recommend you replacing it with an all porcelain crown.

The common age of new permanent molars coming is almost 11-12 years. And your son is just 5 years old. The primary dentition is going to fall for sure but the age from 5-11 is not going to come back. And that is a major growth period in your child's life. So kindly care of the primary teeth. God has given your child the primary dentition with a reason. And hence you have to preserve it.

How to give up chewing tobacco and pan masala. My friend was addicted and the dentist prescribed some chewing gum (not the ones available in any drugstore like nulife). The candy was blue filled in jelly like and each cost around Rs43. Accidentally I forgot the name and lost contact of her as well. She gave up everything after ten days. She was asked to chew just two gums per day. Could you please help me if you could suggest me the name of that particular gum. Thank you.

There is no quick fix or standard method of quitting smoking. However, there are several effective methods and treatments; it is up to each individual to find the one that suits them best. The "no-smoking contract" set a quit date. If it seems easier to you, you can set a quitting 'period' instead. The smoker's diary: many smokers have told us that writing a journal opened their eyes to a habit (smoking) that they thought they knew. Become a forum user and support and encourage each other. Get busy with friend who loves you and does not smoke. NICOTINE CHEWING GUM How to use nicotine gum You can take it throughout the day, or only when you are tormented by the urge to smoke. Because of its flexibility, it is especially indicated for irregular smokers. Take at least 10 pieces per day. If you feel the urge to smoke, use more gum or use either a patch or a nicotine inhaler at the same time. If you smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes per day, you can save money, cut a 4 mg chewing in 2 and use 1/2 piece at a time. Duration of treatment: From 8 weeks to 3 months. Important: For the best results, follow these chewing instructions: Slowly chew the gum: the taste appears After about 10 chews, take a pause by wedging the gum between the cheek and gum Wait until the taste is attenuated Again slowly chew the gum (gum = 30 minutes) Tips from smoking cessation specialist doctors Avoid drinking coffee or fruit juice (acid) before and while using the gum, as these drinks reduce its effectiveness. Chewing the gum too quickly releases too much nicotine, a tangy taste, a decrease in the effectiveness of the gum, hiccups, or stomach ache. Do not stop treatment prematurely as this will decrease your chances of success.

Hello Lybrate user, the sensitivity that you are experiencing might be due to root exposure or cavitation in tooth. Clinical examination is required to form a definitive treatment plan. Hence, you need to visit a dentist. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures or artificial enamel filling. Till then continue using desensitizing toothpaste. Use ultra-soft bristles tooth brush. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal.

This could be the TMJ Pain (pain in right & left joints of jaws). In your case this seems to be due to improper bite due to excessive wearing of your teeth coz which there is sensitivity in your teeth too. This type of conditions are mostly associated with head ache also n pain radiates to ear. Though there are few precautions like avoiding Hard Food to put less force on your jaws. Avoid hot & cold to take care of sensitivity. Can take Muscle Relaxant twice a day. Simple Open-Close Mouth exercises. Further for a definitive solution for this get a Consultation from a PROSTHODONTIST (Dental Specialist) who can deal with TMD Cases like u. U may need bite Corrections. If well equipped clinic then they can do TMJ Analysis with specialized scans.
