Why Breast Feeding is Important for Your Baby?

Why Breast Feeding is Important for Your Baby?

A baby should be breastfed for at least the first few months after birth. Breastfeeding has a number of benefits for both the mother and child. Apart from being the best source of nutrition for the baby, it also helps the mother and child bond.

Here are a few benefits of breastfeeding your baby.

  1. Nutrition: No formula can be compared to the nutrition provided by a mother’s milk. The first milk produced by a mother’s breasts is known as colostrum which is rich in antibodies and proteins. Breast milk is made up of the perfect mix of proteins, vitamins and essential fats. It is also easier to digest as compared to formula feeds.
  2. Immunity boost: A mother’s milk is rich in antibodies and helps strengthen the newborn child’s immunity. These antibodies also help lower the baby’s risk of developing asthma or allergies later in life. Babies that are breastfed are also said to have a lower risk of suffering from ear infections, respiratory problems and diarrhoea. It also plays an important role in lowering chances of sudden infant death syndrome. Breastfeeding is also said to protect babies from certain types of cancer in infancy and later stages,
  3. Bonding: While being breastfed, a baby is held close to the mother and has skin to skin contact. This makes the baby feel secure and helps him or her to bond with the mother. For the mother, this process can also help fight postpartum depression and help reconnect with the baby.
  4. Healthy weight: Babies who are breastfed are said to be less likely to develop obesity. Babies fed on breast milk have been found to have lower levels of insulin than babies who are fed with formula milk or any other milk. As they grow, these babies put on a healthy amount of weight, but refrain from overeating and have healthier eating patterns. This helps maintain a healthy BMI and prevents diseases like diabetes etc.
  5. Boosts intelligence: Studies show that babies who were breastfed for the first six months have a higher IQ than those who were not. Thus, breastfeeding is said to play a significant role in cognitive development. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, breast milk is said to fatty acids that are not available in formulas, Secondly, the emotional bonding between mother and child is also said to contribute towards boosting IQ levels.

Hello, Sizodon syrup is for managing behavior and sleep. Main treatment is to go for sensory integration therapy. He needs to be involved in Behavioral and Developmental Interventions, Social Skills Training, Behavioral Therapy etc. Which will help him in long run. Sleep is a major issue in autism and attention given for being awake leads to more sleep problem as it acts as a reinforcement for them. Certain interventions need to be learn and followed for it. Consult a centre where your child and you can be involved in intervention along with medication help. You can consult me for any help required.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Congenital hypothyroidism will have to treated with adequate dose of Levothyroxine for life. There is no reason to worry if adequate dosage is given & TSH is maintained within specified range. Thanks.

Cystic Fibrosis- Causes and Symptoms!

Cystic Fibrosis- Causes and Symptoms!

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that is known to affect some of the vital organs of the body including the lungs, digestive system to name a few. For long it was believed that cystic fibrosis affects a person in their childhood. However, various research and studies suggest that adults are also susceptible to this inheritable disorder. In this article, we will discuss the cause and symptoms associated with cystic fibrosis.

Cause
The epithelial cells that line the stomach, nasal cavity and lungs, are responsible for the production of the digestive fluids, sweat, tears, mucus. The Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene codes for a protein called the CFTR protein. The CFTR protein, a membrane protein plays a pivotal role in transporting the chloride ions of the epithelial cells inside and out of the cell. This regulation of the chloride ions goes a long way in ensuring that the mucus produced is free-flowing and thin.

In the case of Cystic Fibrosis, the CFTR gene that codes for the protein undergoes a mutation. With the CFTR protein unable to perform its function, sticky and thick mucus builds up and clogs some of the major systems of the body including the digestive system, reproductive, and respiratory system. There is also a higher salt content in the sweat of the affected person.

For a person to be affected by cystic fibrosis, he/she must inherit a copy of the mutated CFTR gene from both the parents ( Autosomal Recessive Disorder) at birth.

Symptoms
The symptoms associated with cystic fibrosis depends on the organs and systems affected.

  1. The thick mucus formed can clog the digestive tract resulting in incomplete absorption of the essential nutrients from the food. This may have an impact on the overall growth and development of the body.
    • - There may be stunted growth or no weight gain.
    • - The stool may appear greasy and foul smelling. Some may also suffer from constipation.
    • - Newborns and infants may suffer from an intestinal blockage.
  2. Cystic fibrosis, left unattended can lead to diabetes, intestinal blockage or obstruction.
    • - The mucus can also block the bile duct triggering a host of problems including liver disorders.
    • - At times, the obstruction or blockage can occur at the junction where the large and the small intestine meets (Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome).
  3. The thick mucus can also affect the lungs and the respiratory system by blocking the tubes that act as a passage carrying the air inside and out of the lungs. As a result,
    • - A person may suffer from lung infections frequently.
    • - There may be difficulty in breathing, stuffy and blocked nose, or wheezing.
    • - Some people may also suffer from a chronic cough with a thick sputum.

Left untreated the complications can worsen resulting in

Nasal polyps, Chronic infections, Hemoptysis (there is blood while coughing), and Pneumothorax (air fills up in the space bifurcates the chest wall from the lungs).

In severe cases, there may be a respiratory failure.

Cystic fibrosis can also trigger fertility problems (both in males and females).

See first you do not use gripe water. It contains alcohol. And the evening colic is a quite normal in newborns. Do not worry about it. you can use colic aid. you cannot completely remove his colic pain. It will decrease as the baby grows.

Cough is a protective phenomenon. It will not cause any life and death problem. So use cough syrups only if the cough is more troublesome. You can use the ascoril syrup for 6 months. No problem.
