Meat - Red vs White Facts Check

Meat forms an essential part of the daily diet of many people. But it often gets difficult to choose between white meat (chicken or fish) and red meat (beef or pork or mutton) due to the numerous health benefits offered by both. Moreover, both kinds of meat have some health risks as well, which should be kept in mind while consuming either of them.

Read on to find how each type of meat may affect your health, and, which will be more beneficial for your body.

Fat content

People who are more conscious about their weight often tend to choose white meat over red meat because of its lower fat content. For example, fat content in chicken is only about 11%, whereas pork contains about 45% fat. Moreover, the saturated fat content of red meat is about 2.64 times that of white meat.

Protein content

100 gm of chicken breast has about 29.80 gm of protein, whereas the same amount of lamb and pork contain 22.51 gm and 27.55 gm protein respectively. In this case, consumption of white meat will prove to be beneficial as your body can absorb only 74% of the protein in red meat and 80% of the protein in white meat.

Other nutrient content

Red meat is rich in niacin, vitamin b12, riboflavin and thiamine, iron and minerals like zinc and phosphorus. While vitamin b12 aids proper nerve health and ensures that the red blood cells function properly, zinc is responsible for strengthening your immune system.

White meat contains fewer nutrients in comparison to red meat. However, fish contains high amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which help in improving lipid profiles and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Health risks

Consumption of both types of meat has been long associated with increased risk of different diseases. The presence of myoglobin, a type of protein in red meat, is responsible for increasing the risk of certain types of cancer. Also, red meat has been often linked with increased chances of hypertension and heart diseases.

These days, feeding antibiotics to chicken for enlarging their size has become a common practise. So, consumption of this type of meat increases the amount of drug-resistant bacteria in your body and reduces the effect of useful drugs too.

White meat and red meat both have their own health benefits and risks, so including small amounts of both in your diet will prove to be beneficial for your body. Determine the amount of each type of meat you will consume depending on your body's specific requirements.

When Is Knee Replacement Required?

Knee replacement surgery- which is also known as knee arthroplasty, helps to relieve the pain in the knee thereby restoring the knee function. During this procedure, a surgeon cuts the damaged cartilage and bone from the kneecap, thighbone, and shinbone and replaces the same with an artificial joint comprising of high-grade plastics, alloys, and polymers. A patient/surgeon has the liberty to choose the type of knee joint he/she prefers based on factors such as weight, age, overall health etc. 

Signs that might indicate a knee replacement surgery -

  1. The pain in the knee keeps coming back all the time. 
  2. The knee aches after a brisk walk or during an ongoing exercise session. 
  3. The mobility of a person has gradually decreased over time as compared to last few years. 
  4. A supporting cane or medication isn’t delivering the desired support or pain relief. 
  5. The knee tends to stiffen when a person sits for a long time. Example- witting through a movie or sitting in the car for too long proves to be a major hurdle. 
  6. The pain proves to be a major problem that intervenes with sleep. 
  7. The knee motion significantly decreases once a person tries to bend the knee. 
  8. Climbing stairs turns out to be a major hurdle. 
  9. Getting out of bathtubs becomes a major challenge. 
  10. The knee becomes and stays stiff or at least half an hour after getting up from bed in the morning. If the stiffness lasts for more than 60 minutes, it is a sign of inflammatory disease. 

How is a knee replacement surgery performed? 

  1. Knee replacement surgery requires overnight stay in the hospital. 
  2. It involves a general or spinal anesthesia
  3. Once the skin over the surgical site is cleansed with an antiseptic, the doctor makes an incision and takes out the damaged surface of the knee joint. 
  4. The knee joint is then resurfaced with a prosthesis made up of plastic and metal. 

A cemented prosthesis is most commonly used during these days. The prosthesis contains 3 components: 

  1. Tibial component 
  2. Femoral component 
  3. Patellar component 

What are the advantages of knee replacement surgery? 

  1. The biggest advantage of this surgery is the freedom from constant and throbbing pain. 
  2. The fact that surgery can increase the mobility also proves to be a blessing for the general condition of the patient.
  3. Knee replacement also helps a patient to get rid of supporting device such as a cane, wheelchair, pain medications etc. 
  4. The feeling of stiffness also goes away after the surgery.

If you are following proper diet and not able to gain weight then firstly, you should go for liver function test and for gaining weight, you have to be patient and practice it correctly, No need to depend on the supplements you should take every 2 hourly meal and fix your meal timing and include good amount of nuts and High Proteins Along With Calories Like Eggs, lean meat, fish, skinless chicken, pulses, sprouts, and dairy products that rich sources of proteins. I workout for minimum 3 days a week and trying to increase on number of days but should I consume protien supplements to get toned and to increase muscle growth? my food does not include any protien rich meat or anything like that. Are protien supplements harmful to health? Do they have harmful effects over the time over body? I have a lot of fat around by belly and want to get rid of it. But does protien supplement help me getting toned? If yes, then which one?

It is too early for you to start taking supplements. If your first goal is fat loss than protein supplements are not required. You should exercise your muscles and eat natural foods. Avoid processed and market foods. Minimise intake of rice & wheat based foods. You can have natural proteins from sprouts, spinach, broccoli etc. Once you have reduced fats then for next level you can consider supplements. But if you want to remain generally fit, supplements are not required.

I had undergone ACL reconstruction surgery and today (21.11.2017) is the 10th day. Presently I face the following problems. (1) Swelling &pain in the knee (mild) and swelling in the foot (mild). (2) Knuckle occurs (with a popping sound and pain) when rising up from the bed (bending the knee from a fully stretched position. The knee is also very stiff when rising up. (3) Whether knee exercises can be done in the swelled position? Kindly suggest the possible solutions.

Hi. 1) Pain will be there for some time and it will reduce gradually. Swelling over the knees and foot will take some time to go as it is the dependent edema. Keep leg elevated over pillow and apply ice pack. 2) Physiotherapy should be done as the Quadriceps are now not firing so do your Quadriceps stretching and static strengthening exercises. 3) Yes definitely you should do exercises or else swelling may remain and your muscles will get wasted.

You have to start eating quality food which contains pulses, whole wheat, oats, milk and milk products, nuts, fruits and vegetables in a proper way. Have Small and Frequent meals. Excess consumption of soybean can increase female hormone oestrogen in men. But that happens only in very high consumption. Upto 50 gms per day is very safe. Soybean is the only complete plant protein available. So you don't have to worry if you are eating in limited quantity.

Hi For weight gain you must take high calloric food. Take a early morning breakfast. The breakfast sho uld consist a big glass of milk. To increase the caloric value of milk add 2 tablespoon sugar+2 tablespoon Bournvita. Along with milk in breakfast take a bread with with plenty of butter, two Bananas and two fried eggs. All this breakfast will cause slight heaviness and belching in the first few days but if continuied with a little will power, it will do a lot of good in future For glowing skin you must take Wheat, Old barley, Rice, Green gram (Mudga ), Pigeon pea (arhar ), Masura, Patola, Kakmachi, Garlic and Cucumber (kheera) .Do not take Newly harvested cereals (navanna), Black gram (udada), Radish, Sour and heavy substance, Milk, Curd, Sugarcane product, Jaggery. Mild exercise (alpa vyayama) and Bathing are useful. Day sleeping and Mental stress should be avoided. There are many usefull medicine in Ayurveda for those conditions. You may consult me on Lybrate.

You need to have some motivation in your life. Check the occurrence pattern of your problem. Besides: -drink 2-3 liters water daily -increase intake of fresh fruits and veggies in your diet -try to sleep before 10 pm -avoid usage of electronic items before sleep -massage with olive oil on your feet before sleep -try to avoid stress if still problem persists then you should go for your thyroid level and BMI checkup.
