Severe Toothache - How To Get Relief From It?

Severe Toothache - How To Get Relief From It?

Those who have experienced it would vouch for the fact that a toothache is one of the worst pains. There could be times when the attack happens out of nowhere and you are crying for relief.

The tooth has 2 parts - the visible part called the crown and the invisible part called the root which is embedded in the jaw bone and covered by the gums.

Both the crown and the root have 3 layers from inside out. The crown has enamel, dentin, and pulp. The enamel is the mineralized part of the tooth, dentin has fine sensory dentinal tubules, and the pulp receives nerve and blood supply to the tooth through a small orifice at the end of the tooth called the apex.  On the root surface, instead of enamel, there is a softer substance called cementum.  The dentin and the pulp continue through the tooth but are thinner in the root portion of the tooth.

The mouth has the largest amount of bacteria in the body. These act on the food deposits on the tooth and produce acid which leads to the breakdown of the enamel. The only symptom when enamel breakdown happens is food lodgment, and it continues till treatment ensues. Once the breakdown reaches the dentin, sensitivity sets in, and most people go for treatment then. If not, the next layer is the pulp, when there is severe pain.  This acute pulpitis causes pain in spurts and can be unbearable.

On the root surface, if there is periodontal disease and the gum line goes down, then cementum gets worn off (far more easily than enamel) and decay reaches the dentin and pulp (again faster than in the crown).

Whatever the case, the treatment would be the same:

  • Dental examination, clinical testing, and x-rays would be diagnostic. Tapping the tooth would reproduce the same pain and that is indicative of acute pulpitis
  • Antibiotics and painkillers would be given to control the pain
  • Once the infection subsides, root canal therapy is initiated.  Using the decayed portion to gain access to the root, thin instruments called reamers and files are used to clean out the pulp space completely. They are then shaped to accommodate an inert substance called gutta percha which ensures infection does not seep into the tooth again.
  • With RCT, the tooth is weakened, and therefore a crown needs to be placed. This could either be a ceramic crown or a full metal crown based on economic and esthetic reasons.

The best way to avoid this is regular visits to a dentist so that decay is identified in the early stages and treated with the minimal cost and maximum natural tooth preservation.

I recently had a dental implant on one of my upper front teeth. The crown is bumpy from inside as compared to my other real teeth. The doctor said that it will have bump as it is my front teeth. Is it so? It's really irritating as my tongue is always touching it. What should I do?

Yes lybrate-user I can help you. You should mix baking soda with your toothpaste and than brush your teeth. Also you can brush your teeth with activated charcoal. It also help in white ed teeth. However normal color of teeth is off white and not pure white. So don't let advertising fool you. You can turn your teeth from yellow to off white. I had my wisdom tooth removed out on April 10, the experience of tooth removal was complicated and very painful as I heard doctors discussing during surgery that the tooth was like the first molar. Anyhow they removed the tooth and they sutured thrice after the tooth was removed. After 12 days I got my stitches removed and was told to gurgle rigorously after ever meal. After going home and seeing in the mirror I saw a small hole and able to see my jaw bone from that hole. Will this hole be healed? Or should I take any further treatment?

If your concern is only about the hole that you can see, then it will get healed eventually. Complete epithelium healing takes about a months time. Till then you can massage your gums at the extracted area with hexigel, metroplex etc. If there is pain or discomfort you need to get it checked for any infection/inflammation in that area. Mouthwash use avoids infections/ inflammation in the area and helps fasten healing. Hope this helps.

Quick And Painless Single Sitting Root Canal Treatment!

Gone are the days when root canal treatment would mean multiple visits to the dentist. Root canal treatment at complete dental solutions is a single visit procedure. Single sitting root canal treatment is painless & less time consuming

Root canal treatment is a way that can repair and save damaged or infected tooth without removing it permanently. The treatment is done when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the root canal that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue) becomes inflamed or infected.

The different causes of this inflammation or infection are deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, a crack in the tooth and an injury to a tooth. The untreated pulp inflammation can lead to an abscess and cause pain.

The common signs which may warn you about pulp damage or infection are a pain, discoloration of the tooth, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and difficulty in chewing. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms.

In single sitting RCT- all the steps of the root canal are done on the same day. The canals are first located and cleaned thoroughly. They are enlarged using new technologically advanced instruments and techniques. The canals then receive their final fillings and sealed

How single sitting root canals are more beneficial?
-single time injection
-one course of antibiotics
-saves you multiple visits
-less discomfort and easier healing
