Embolization is an option which shrinks the fibroid, at the same time preserving the uterus. The blood flow to the fibroid is cut off, thereby preventing its further growth. The next surgical option is myomectomy, where the portion of the uterus which contains the fibroid alone is removed. In such cases, fibroids are cut into small pieces and then removed from the body.
