An abnormal junction or connection between two organs or tissues is referred to as a  fistula . It targets two hollow organs, vessels, or tissue structures. During the procedure, the doctor staples the prolapsed hemorrhoid to the walls of the rectum and cuts of the blood supply to the affected vein. By doing this, the tissue is allowed to shrink and be reabsorbed into the body. As compared to a hemorrhoidectomy, stapling is less painful and has a quicker recovery time.

Cow urine or gomutra contains iodine, which is easily absorbable from the gastrointestinal tract. The mean urinary iodine levels in dairy cows may vary from 79.2 to 94.8 micrograms of iodine per litre of urine depending upon their physiological conditions. Iodine is an essential element to produce thyroid hormones such as triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These are catabolic hormones that generate heat and cause body warmth. It has been proven that the cow urine contains iodine in required level for normal functioning of thyroid gland.

Urinary iodine concentration in cow urine varies depending upon its biological status and it could stimulate the patient's thyroid gland activity on oral administration of iodine. Thyroxine stimulates more oxygen utilization and heat production by many different cells of the body.

During iodine deficiency, the pituitary gland secretes enhanced amounts of thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh), which causes compensatory adjustment. This leads in the production of more extensive secretory epithelium which in turn will result in enlargement of the thyroid gland and loss of colloid material in the thyroid follicles. In this scenario, exogenous supplementation of iodine brings back the normal thyroid status.

Things to know about Hernia

There are glands inside the anus that secrete fluids. Sometimes these glands can get clogged. Pus builds up in the blocked clogs, which get infected. This is called an abscess. Unless the abscess is treated right away, it will keep growing. It eventually punches a hole through the skin near your anus to drain the infected tissues and pus. This tunnel that leads from the gland to the hole is called a fistula.

Usually, it is an abscess that causes a fistula. But sometimes a fistula can be caused by tuberculosis, a bowel illness or sexually transmitted diseases.

What are the symptoms of anal fistula?

The symptoms of anal fistula are-

  Pain while sitting down
  Soreness around the anus

How is fistula diagnosed?

If you complain of any of the above symptoms, a doctor will perform a physical examination on you.

Sometimes a physical examination does not reveal a fistula because the fistula can close for a while and then open up again. So then your doctor might ask you to get the following tests done-

  A blue dye test
  Computerized tomography (CT Scan)
  Anorectal ultrasound
  Colonoscopy.

Treatment for anal fistula

Unfortunately, there are no medicines that can treat fistula. If you are diagnosed with fistula, you will require surgery. However, it is a minimally invasive surgery with no risks involved.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. A fistula surgery can be done in the following ways-

  If the fistula is located beneath the sphincter muscles, the surgeon cuts the fistula open so that it can heal and new healthy tissues can develop there.
  If the fistula passes through the upper part of the sphincter muscles, then the surgeon runs a special stitch through the fistula (seton stitch) so that the fistula can drain properly and heal. It takes 6 weeks for the pus to drain and the wound to heal
  Sometimes, a doctor will simply plug the fistula so it does not seep pus.

General and specific complications of a fistula surgery

Though it is a safe surgery, some complications may arise, but rarely. These may be general or specific.

General complications-

  Bleeding and pain
  Scarring around the region of the surgery

Treatment: Once gallstones are detected through a CT scan or ultrasound, the doctor begins the course of treatment. Gallstones can be removed only through surgery. In surgery, the gallbladder is removed to help the bile flow directly into the duodenum from the liver. This surgery is called cholecystectomy and it is a safe procedure. The removal of gallbladder does not affect the digestive system in any way. 

Prevention: Gallstones can form in any individual s gallbladder but some people are more susceptible to the condition. Such individuals include women over 40, those who lead a sedentary lifestyle, obese/overweight individuals, and those with a family history of gallstones. Therefore, such people should be aware of the risk they face. If such individuals report any symptoms related to gallbladder stones, they should get it diagnosed immediately. Apart from this, one should also keep a check on the diet. A high-fat or high-cholesterol diet should be replaced with a high-fiber diet and one should also take meals on time. Not eating anything for long hours and fasting increases the risk of gallstones. Regular exercise also helps in this matter. Last but not the least, one should drink plenty of water as it regulates the functioning of the liver and prevents the formation of stones. Gallstones are a common disorder but they cause difficulties for the patient and hence, one should get it treated on time.
