A constant barrage of pain signals may cause the cells at the end of nerve fibres to become over-sensitized. This is known as 'wind-up' and is one of the most common causes of chronic pain that occurs even though the root of the problem has been identified and treated.

It affects the individual's day to day activities and if persistent, can also have a harmful impact on mental health and psychosis. Restless leg syndrome is a condition where the nervous supply to the lower legs (and sometimes hands) is affected. Sleep pattern: Sound sleep practices like having an early dinner, a quiet room free of digital media, optimal temperature, and relaxing ambience helps in a better sleep. This has shown to reduce the incidence of RLS and evidence of sound sleep.
Medications: RLS can also cause mild to moderate pain in the affected legs, and so pain killers can be used once in a while if the pain is not bearable. These should be used only rarely and continued use can lead to stomach ulcers and bleeding. The above mentioned nonmedical methods should be tried before trying medications. Anticonvulsants have been used to control RLS if pain killers alone are not adequate. In more severe cases, antiparkinson drugs are used with great success.

Restless Leg Syndrome - How It Can Be Controlled?

Problems with the arteries and veins present in the hands or legs can lead to vascular disorders. The arteries carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body in order to deliver nutrients and oxygen. The veins carry the blood back to the heart, after the nutrients have been used up. What are the Risk Factors for Peripheral Artery Disease?
An individual is at risk for developing vascular blockages in the hands or legs if one or more of the following factors are present:

Smoking
Diabetes
Heredity Factors   A personal or family history of blood vessel disease
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Aging   People aged above 50 years and older are more prone to vascular blockage
Can it be treated?
Treatments for vascular blockage can vary depending on the age, cause of the blockage, intensity and overall well-being.

Treatments can include:

Self-care   Reducing risk factors and making lifestyle changes to quit smoking, sedentary life or diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol management can reverse symptoms of vascular disease.
Medications   A variety of drugs can be prescribed to lower the risk and progression of narrowing blood vessels or prevent blood clotting.

The most commonly used surgical procedure is the leg bypass surgery. The surgery aims to reroute the supply of blood around an obstructed artery in one of the legs.

How is leg bypass surgery performed?

The surgeon performs leg bypass surgery using a graft (usually made of plastic tube) to bypass or replace the blocked portion of the artery. On some occasions, the graft may be a vein or blood vessel taken from the patient s body (usually, the other leg).

During the surgery, the surgeon will first administer anaesthesia so that you are not able to feel pain or discomfort. He/she will make an incision over the portion of the blocked artery. After carefully removing the skin tissues, the surgeon will place clamps on each side of the narrowed artery and sew the grafts in place. The surgeon will ensure that the flow of blood in your lower extremity (legs) is good. An arteriogram (an X-ray of the arteries/blood vessels) is recommended to make sure that the graft is working fine after the leg bypass surgery.

For most people, leg bypass surgery helps improve the flow of blood in the arteries. The prognosis is better if underlying medical conditions like diabetes are controlled.

Leg Bypass - Treating It Through Vascular Surgery!

In recent times, there has been an upsurge in the instances of leg pain. People from all age groups, irrespective of their gender, are being affected. Spondylolisthesis or a slip disc: The condition mostly affects the lumbar area (base of the spine) whereby there is slippage of one of the bones over the adjacent bone (the bone located just below it).
A muscle pull in the buttocks can also trigger sciatica and many times, a pregnant woman may also experience sciatica. The sciatic pain can be:

Chronic sciatic pain: As the name suggests, chronic sciatic pain is intense and more severe, with the symptoms persisting for a longer time (more than three months). Arthritis, severe nerve damage or scarring (tissues) are often responsible for chronic sciatic pain.
Acute sciatic pain: An injury to the nerves, muscles, spinal joints or discs can cause the pain. However, as instantly as the pain starts, the condition improves within days (at times weeks).
In addition to the radiating pain, there may be other symptoms associated with sciatica such as

Difficulting in leg or foot movement.
Weakness
Sciatica can also trigger a pain in the back of the leg which aggravates when a person is in a sitting position
Hip pain
Numbness, and often a tingling or burning sensation radiating down the leg
In some people, sciatica can cause a shooting pain (which worsens when a person tries to stand up)
The pain (in some cases) can extend to the foot and toes
