Open surgery

Laparoscopic surgery

Obesity: A person with a BMI of more than 35 is often not a good candidate for a transplant. The overall health should be managed in these people.
Malnutrition: On the other extreme, severely malnourished individuals are also not considered for a transplant.
HIV infection: A person who is HIV-infected does not qualify for a liver transplant.
Substance abuse: Anyone who is actively abusing alcohol and/or substances is definitely removed from the list for a transplant.
Metastasis: If a patient is looking for a liver transplant due to hepatic cancer, it is essential that the cancer is contained. If it has spread to various parts, then containing it would be difficult, and a transplant may not succeed.
Multisystem organ failure: Other than heart and lungs, even people with poor renal function are not ideal candidates for a liver transplant.
A detailed liver recipient evaluation assessing the severity of liver disease, chances of survival, and overall health are done before a person is listed for liver transplant. This evaluation ensures a better success rate with the transplant.

Common Surgical Complications That One Should Be Prepared For?

When an organ or fatty tissue is squeezed through a hole (weak spot) in the connective tissue or a surrounding muscle then it causes a hernia. Usually, hernia happens at the abdominal wall and sometimes it can be seen as an external bulge.

There are various types of hernia which include:

  Inguinal Hernia (happens in the inner groin).
  Incisional Hernia (develops through a scar or an incision in the abdomen).
  Umbilical Hernia (develops at the belly button).
  Femoral Hernia (develops in the outer groin or upper thigh area).
  Ventral Hernia (develops in the general ventral or abdominal wall).

Mesh Surgery 
Surgical mesh is used to supply extra support to the damaged or weakened tissue. It is a medical device, usually made out of either animal tissue (from skin or intestine) or synthetic material. Surgical mesh of synthetic material can be made in non-knitted sheet forms or in the knitted mesh. The synthetic material used for making a surgical mesh can be absorbable, non-absorbable material, or a combination of both.

Surgical mesh made out of animal tissue is disinfected and processed in a way that makes it suitable for implantation. These are absorbable and mostly made from the tissues of pig or cow.
Absorbable mesh degrades and loses its strength over time. It is not made to supply
long-term support to the restored site.

On the other hand, non absorbable mesh remains in the body for a long duration and is accounted for as a permanent implant. It provides permanent strength for restoring hernia.

In Hernioplasty or the mesh surgery for a hernia, the muscle opening is not stitched shut, instead it is covered with a sterile, flat mesh which is mostly made of synthetic or animal tissue. Small cuts are made around the hole in the shape of the mesh and the patch is stitched into the healthy surrounding tissues. Recovery
Usually it takes up to 4 to 6 weeks to recover completely from mesh surgery. However, one can get back to his/her normal routine within 2 weeks post the surgery. Treatment
 
This includes a combination of constant monitoring followed by a decision to do surgical treatment. Hiatal hernias and umbilical hernias can be monitored for a while before deciding on surgery. 8.   Lastly, go for a walk after each meal and do not sleep after eating, especially if you've had a heavy meal.

Hiatal hernia takes place when the upper portion of the stomach pushes itself through an opening in the diaphragm, into the chest cavity. The diaphragm is a wall of thin muscles, which separates the chest cavity and the abdomen. In most cases, a small hiatal hernia doesn't cause problems and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition.

But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your oesophagus, leading to heartburn. Self-care measures or medications can usually relieve these symptoms, although a very large hiatal hernia sometimes requires surgery.

Causes

Hiatal hernia is primarily or most commonly caused due to the increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity. Sometimes, a lot of pressure may be felt around the stomach accompanied by coughing, vomiting, strain during bowel movements. For people born with an abnormal hiatus, the chance of getting hiatal hernia is more.

The two common types of hiatal hernia are:

 Sliding hiatal hernia, which occurs during the sliding out of the stomach and oesophagus into and out of the chest through the hiatus. This type of hiatal hernia is less intense and has no symptoms.
 Fixed hiatal hernia or paraoesophageal hernia is an uncommon type of hernia where a part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm and stays there.

Symptoms

Usually, no symptoms are experienced during hiatal hernia. Some symptoms are experienced that happen due to stomach acids, bile or air, which enters the oesophagus. Some common symptoms include:

 Heartburns which become worse when a person lies down
 Chest pain, better called epigastric pain
 Problem in swallowing food
 Belching

Tests for diagnosis

Several tests can be carried out for the diagnosis of hiatal hernia. They include:

 Barium x-ray, where a person is made to drink a liquid filled with barium before the x-ray. The x-ray provides a clear image of the upper digestive tract region and the location of the stomach can be seen. If it is protruded out, hiatal hernia is signified.
 Endoscopy is another test for detection of hiatal hernia. A thin tube slides down the throat, which reaches up to the oesophagus and stomach. This will determine whether the stomach is pushing through the diaphragm or not.

Treatment

Medicines, which are used to cure a hiatal hernia may include antacids for neutralizing stomach acid, h2 receptor blockers to lower acid production and proton pump inhibitors. Sometimes fundoplication surgery is required for the treatment of hiatal hernia, although it is rare. Some common surgical techniques are rebuilding of oesophageal muscles or a surgery to put the stomach back in its actual place. Laparoscopic surgery methods are used. Hiatal hernia may reoccur even after surgery; so general precautions should be taken. You should:

 Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight
 Avoid lifting heavy objects and ask for help
 Avoid any kind of strain on the abdominal muscles
