Do You Snore? It May Be A Sign of Sleep Apnea

Do You Snore? It May Be A Sign of Sleep Apnea

Sleeping sound at night is important for good health, both mental and physical. And if it gets interrupted and you are not able to doze off well, then it can pose serious risk to your well-being. Many of us believe that snoring is an indicator of sound sleep, when actually it is the sign of an underlying sleep disorder. The worst part is that you may also not know that you snore, until someone lets you know. But if you snore, it is something you must not ignore it.

Why snoring is a concern to watch out for?

Snoring is the most common symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). And because of lack of awareness, we keep ignoring either our own snoring or that of our loved ones, not knowing it could be deeply impacting health.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a sleep associated breathing disorder which is characterized by pauses in breath during sleep. In Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), breathing pauses for multiple times at night due to the upper airway obstruction that restricts airflow in spite of respiratory effort. This leads to several physiological changes in the body throughout the night such as drop in oxygen levels in blood, increased respiratory effort and heart rate to name a few.

Why sleep apnea is harmful for health?

Sleep apnea has various harmful effects on the body. It contributes to the development of three major health lifestyle disorders if untreated, namely:

  1. Hypertension: is an identifiable cause of hypertension, according to National Institute of Health. High prevalence of OSA is also found in in cardiovascular (heart) diseases (30-80%).

  2. Diabetes: leads to insulin resistance. Over 50% of type 2 diabetes patients have been shown to have sleep apnea.

  3. Obesity: It is a risk factor.

  4. In addition to these, lack of good quality sleep can also result in poor alertness, memory, mood, behavior and even lead to like depression.

So, if you are suffering from any of these lifestyle disorders, it is advisable that you get yourself screened for Sleep Apnea too.

Who are at higher risk for sleep apnea?

As per various studies, males above 35 years of age have a higher risk of sleep apnea. Post- menopausal women are also at higher risk for sleep apnea. Smoking, alcohol intake, family history of sleep apnea and obesity are also risk factors of sleep apnea.

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

  1. Excessive sleepiness during the day

  2. Loud Snoring (with periods of silence followed by gasps)

  3. Restless sleep

  4. Morning headaches

  5. Tiredness, dullness

  6. Low concentration

What you should do if you witness any of these signs?

The very first thing is that you visit a ‘sleep specialist’ for diagnosis. The specialist will make you undergo a sleep test or polysomnography test in which measurement of your bodily functions including airflow, breathing and related parameters is done throughout the night. The test can be done in the comfort of your home or in the clinic.

Basis the diagnosis, the specialist will provide you CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, an effective treatment for sleep apnea. In the therapy, a CPAP machine, manufactured by healthcare companies such as PHILIPS Respironics, is given to the patient for use. The CPAP machine, consisting of a device, humidifier and mask, prevents the upper airway from getting obstructed during sleep by providing a gentle flow of air through the upper airway, allowing the patient to breath freely and get sound, restful sleep.

PHILIPS Respironics’ each mask is designed to help the patient get relief through a combination of unique features and technologies that ensure the patient gets normal and natural experience as possible.

Sleeping in peace is very important. And if now someone tells you that you snore, or you watch any of your loved one snoring, don’t make fun but take the right step. Rush to a sleep specialist and get the sleep test done!

How Long To Breastfeed To Get Benefits?

How Long To Breastfeed To Get Benefits?
There is no fixed duration to breastfeed. When considering the duration you wish to feed your baby, do take note of the following points:

  • Exclusive till six months: Pediatric and medical experts throughout the globe recommend exclusive breastfeeding up to six months and then breastfeeding in combination with solid food up to 12 months (30).
  • Continue after 12 months: The AAP recommends breastfeeding beyond the first birthday and encourages mothers to do so (31). A toddler may get most of his nutrition from solid food, but he still enjoys added benefits of breastmilk that contains unique substances such as antibodies.
  • Can extend to two years and beyond: The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends breastfeeding up to two years and even beyond if the mother and toddler wish to do so (32). WHO states that breastmilk is a “natural food”. Even when the baby is a year-and-a-half old, breastmilk is capable of providing a third of the toddler’s nutritional requirements.

What Are The Benefits Of Breastfeeding For The Mother?

Here are some scientifically proven benefits of breastfeeding a baby:

Health benefits:
While your baby benefits from the breastmilk, you gain health advantages as well.

  • Quick postpartum recovery: Mothers who breast-feed recover faster post-delivery even if it is a Cesarean-section. It happens because suckling of the nipples releases the hormone oxytocin, which speeds the recovery of the uterus, letting it regain its original shape (16).
  • Breastfeeding can help you lose pregnancy fat: Producing milk uses additional calories that body sources from the body fat accumulated during pregnancy. It means, mothers, who exclusively breastfeed, tend to return to their pre-pregnancy shape and weight faster (17).
  • Lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers: The chances of getting breast and ovarian cancers are lower in women who breastfeed. Researchers found that a woman can reduce her risk of breast cancer by 50% if she breastfed for two years in life (18). Other studies noted a reduced chance of having ovarian cancer if the mother breastfed at least for a year (19). These benefits last a lifetime thus making breastfeeding a form of natural health insurance for a woman.
  • Lowers the risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes: Extensive research has proven that when you breastfeed, you invariably reduce the chance of developing hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, and type 2 diabetes.

The cardiac rehabilitation team

Phase I (Initial Phase)

This is an inpatient program. It begins with pre-procedure counselling and continues immediately after coronary artery grafting or stenting and post-angina or myocardial infarction. Its aim is to initiate early mobilisation (out of the bed) to reduce the effects of de-conditioning, along with patient education about heart disease. This is continued with a walking and exercise program at home or till the patient returns back to the hospital for Phase II.

Phase II (Conditioning Phase)

This consists of a comprehensive program to modify the risk factors for heart disease and consists of exercise, stress management, smoking cessation, behaviour modification, nutritional advice and patient education about the risk factors of heart disease. The aerobic exercise program can begin as early as 2 weeks after an uncomplicated infarction, angina and stenting or 4 weeks after a complicated infarction or bypass grafting. This is conducted in the form of group sessions or classes consisting of the three steps of initial stretching exercises, conditioning phase of aerobic training on the treadmill, ergo cycle, stepper or cross trainer (along with strengthening exercises) followed by the cool down phase. One session usually lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. It takes a frequency of 3 to 5 times a week to complete 20 sessions. Initial sessions are conducted with electrocardiographic monitoring. The behaviour management and nutritional component runs along with the exercise program. All sessions are physician monitored and are conducted by trained staff.

Phase III (Maintenance Phase)

This aims at continuing the benefits gained by patients during the second phase. It consists of the continuation of the aerobic exercise program but at a lesser frequency of about 2 to 3 times a week at home/in a gymnasium/at a hospital.

Treatment Of Sleep Apnea

Numerous treatment options are used in obstructive sleep apnea. Avoiding alcohol and smoking is recommended, as is avoiding medications that relax the central nervous system. Weight loss is recommended in those who are overweight. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mandibular advancement devices are often used and found to be equally effective. Physical training, even without weight loss, improves sleep apnea. There is insufficient evidence to support widespread use of medications or surgery.
