How To Identify If You're Suffering From Delusional Disorder?

M. D. Psychiatry, Diploma in Psychological Medicine-DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist,
How To Identify If You're Suffering From Delusional Disorder?

Delusional disorder refers to the condition in which an individual experiences non-bizarre delusions that are beliefs in things that aren't actually true. The delusions involve situations that take place in real life like being deceived or stalked, conspired against, etc but in actuality, these situations may be highly exaggerated or not true at all as they involve the misinterpretation of experiences or observations. This health problem tends to take place during the middle or later part of your life and is said to affect women more than men.

What are the symptoms associated with this condition?

There are certain signs that you can look out for to easily identify this condition and there are:

  1. Delusional thoughts lasting one month and above
  2. Lack of schizophrenia symptoms except delusions associated with the olfactory and tactile systems
  3. One's behavior and normal functioning doesn't witness any kind of impairment
  4. Duration of mood symptoms is short compared to the length of the delusions
  5. Disorder is not brought on by the use of substances or any medical condition
  6. Commencement of the disorder can vary from teenage years to later part of adulthood

What causes it to happen?
The root cause of the disorder is still not known, but experts are of the opinion that a variety of biological, genetic, environmental and psychological factors can cause it to occur.

Some of these causes include:

  • Genetics: It's said that this disorder can be passed on from parents to children. Additionally, it's more common in individuals whose family members suffer from schizophrenia or one of its types.
  • Psychological/ environmental: In addition to drug and alcohol abuse, delusional disorder can also be set off by stress.
  • Biological: Abnormalities in certain parts of the brain can lead to this problem. Areas of brain associated with thinking and perception have been found to be connected to delusional symptoms.

Along with the medication you can start psychotherapy. Please talk to your doctor about it and then consult a counsellor/psychotherapist who can have a few sessions with you and spend time with you and help you to cope up with your life. All the best.

The caffeine in chocolate, coffee, and tea are actually stimulants to which you can get addicted. If you stop taking caffeine abruptly, you may have symptoms for a day or more, especially if you consume two or more cups of coffee a day. Symptoms of withdrawal from caffeine include: headache, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, and difficulty concentrating. Caffeine does not cause anxiety but the withdrawal can.

I am 22 my brother 29 , he always insults me ,hurt me, think I am his enemy. Everyday we are fighting. I am tired for all of this. I wanna relief, trying suicide. But I am not enough strong to do it. My marriage is fixed in 2017. My father is dead. My mom , me n my brother stay in our house. When i'm sad , do not know why I am trying to committed suicide. I love my family but why my brother think that I am his enemy. Trying to rule over him. please help me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Nobody should have the power to make you commit suicide. Your life is extremely precious and if your brother likes to bully, only you can allow him to bully you. In other words, you can be disturbed about it or just laugh it off. However, since your marriage is coming up soon why let him have any power over you. Be patient and get married peacefully and then you will be far away from your brother. He may be jealous of you for some reason or maybe he is missing his father and is expressing his anger towards you. Since the father is not there to control him, he may be losing control over himself for various reasons. Tell him about that and see what his reaction is. Talk to mom to intervene too. But do not take your life, it is precious to you.

Hi I feel negative at all fell like I'm in tunnel. Also I am losing my memory I checkedup with doctor but there is no positive response. I have fear problem also cold you pleasehelp me this problem I do yoga and Jim also every day.

MSC Psychotherapy & Counselling, CHt Hypnotherapy, MD Alternative Medicine, MBBS, Diploma in Public Health
Psychologist, Mumbai
This gloomy feeling is sign of depression. Though you feel like you are in tunnel there is always a light at the end. It matters what we are focusing on darkness in our life i. E. The difficulties or hope of brighter future i. E. Light at the end. Also we were in light before tunnel i. E. Definitely good memories and achievements of past. This tunnel vision is classical of depression. Say to your self that. This too shall pass. Focus on positive happening around you. The smallest things like cold breeze in hot summer or birds chipping. It is helpful to write every positive happening in a day. Learn some meditation exercise, active physical exercises. If still this persists then you may need to visit doctor or psychologist for further help.

I can't forget my ex girlfriend at any cost. I always contemplate on her. Her memories gush through my mind. I have become ecstatic and almost mad without her. Pls help me.

Hi Lybrate user, through your concern I can feel your unconditional love for that girl. But its the time now that you should move on ,just ask from your sole that the girl who is not caring about you now whether she will be right person for you. May be presently your feeling is dominating so can't feel anythingbut after few days you will realise it. You love someone its really wonder feeling you should proud of yourself that you are loving someone but at the same time you must understand that for any relation whether between married or unmarried couple when both agrees then only that relation can continue ,when by anyway any one forcibly tries to continue as other partner is not intrested then it will become burden. You cannot force any one to love or for care ,if anyhow in any type of pressure someone comes then it will be for short time only ,it can be for long time only if someone comes by realising your love and importance. Lets come to your problem that you are still missing that her and it is affecting you very badly you will be normal in few days as time is the best healer. In the meantime you can follow my few suggestions don't be in contact with that girl or any common friend ,involve yourself in some activity, you can join any hobby class, be social as much as you can ,main concept is make your routine such that you don't get time to think on this topic as it will only make your life hell and you will gain nothing, if there will be any chance then it can be only by giving some space in your relation. Take care.

Sometimes I am Short tempered when my beloved do some wrong and makes some bad behaviour and gets angry without logically, and sometimes I understand that she doesn't understand my feelings whenever she makes me angry again and again. I get a lot anger that time and wish to go an end. Please suggest me what must I do?

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
You definitely seem to have anger management issues. Let me first assure you that nobody around you is the cause for your distress. It is your belief system that judges every kind of outside behaviour irrationally so that you ending up in a problem. This is definitely not to blame you. Once you learn to deal with/ manage to rearrange your belief system to think rationally your negative emotions certainly won't remain harmful to you at all. I understand that this seems a bit complicated to you. But some sessions of ret with behaviour therapy would certainly help you come out of this. Consult a ret therapist or a psychiatrist for counseling and therapy.

You may be into an anger-related depression and it is not unusual to feel fear too during this state. You need help immediately and you should inform your wife-to-be about all this. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Life is very precious and when you marry you will be important to your wife too. Whatever it is work on the issue and live life well and to the fullest. Be positive always.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Being active, exercising, general positive thinking etc help you in having concentration. Take care.
