Hello doctor, I have a left cortical cyst on my left kidney measuring 11 by 8. Please tell me what is its better treatment and what are precautions that should I take. Thanks.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
If the cyst is causing pressure or other symptoms you have to do surgery . If your simple kidney cyst causes no signs or symptoms and doesn't interfere with your kidney function, you may not need treatment. Instead, your doctor may recommend that you have an imaging test, such as ultrasound, periodically to see whether your kidney cyst has enlarged. If your kidney cyst changes and causes signs and symptoms, you may choose to have treatment at that time. Sometimes a simple kidney cyst goes away on its own.

Dear , repeated uti and small calculi suggest that you are likely to have bladder outflow obstruction as primary problem, however mild it makes you prone for infection and infection in turn cause the stone drink plenty of fluids and evaluate the severity if obstruction by usg and urine flow studies and post reports to see.

Hi, The size of the kidney stone is too small. Hence drink lot of fluids like water, tender coconut water, lemon juice which are very helpful in renal stones. The fluid consumption should be around,, 3-4 litres per day which helps to flush the stones along with urine.

Dialysis May Save Your Life!

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, DM - Nephrology, DNB (Nephrology)
Nephrologist, Delhi
Dialysis May Save Your Life!

Located right under the rib cage, kidneys are a very important organ of the body. They are not only responsible for purifying your blood from wastes and excess fluid but are also involved in maintaining electrolyte balance, regulating blood pressure and producing red blood cell in the body.

In many cases, due to some medical condition, one or both kidneys may stop functioning properly. If not treated in time, it may lead to complete kidney failure and if the kidneys fail completely, dialysis or transplant may be the only treatment options available.

Dialysis is a treatment in which the blood is filtered and purified artificially using machines. This process is beneficial for those whose kidneys are not able to do their job properly.

Need for dialysis

A functioning kidney prevents the accumulation of excess water, impurities, and wastes inside the body. They also work to maintain the blood pressure level and control the presence of certain chemicals like sodium and potassium.

When the kidneys fail to perform these critical functions, maybe because of some disease or injury, dialysis helps to keep up the healthy functioning of the body as much as possible. As without dialysis all the wastes and fluids will accumulate and poison the body, resulting even in death. However, it must be kept in mind that dialysis is not a cure for kidney diseases; it is just an alternative to their functions.

Types of dialysis
Dialysis is an artificial process of purifying your blood using machines. There are two types of dialysis:

Hemodialysis
This is one of the most common types of dialysis, where an artificial kidney, known as a hemodialyzer, is used to remove waste and chemicals from the blood. The doctor surgically creates a vascular access into the blood vessels allowing the artificial kidney to perform.

Peritoneal Dialysis
This is a surgical procedure, where a catheter is implanted in the belly area. The treatment involves a special fluid called dialysate which is flowed into the abdomen to clean the blood. Once the blood is cleaned, the fluid is drained from the abdomen. The benefit of this treatment is that you can perform it in your home, without going to a hospital.

Risks in Dialysis
Even though either of these two treatment procedures is life-saving and there is hardly any alternative, these two can also come with risks. The risks include peritonitis, abdominal muscle weakening, high blood sugar level, weight gain, low blood pressure anemia, muscle cramping, insomnia, itching, depression, increased potassium level and pericarditis. If you experience any of these symptoms of the risks involved, then immediately consult your doctor and explain in details.

A patient who is going through dialysis for a long time also has a chance of succumbing to the medical condition called amyloidosis. When the amyloid proteins, which are produced in bone marrow, collects in kidneys, hearts, liver and other organs, amyloidosis occurs. This results in joint pain, stiffness and even swelling.

What is the common symptoms of kidney failure? Is it noticed at the initial stage?

M.Sc - Psychology, MBA (Healthcare)
General Physician, Kangra
Symptoms of kidney failure are due to the build-up of waste products in the body that may cause weakness, shortness of breath, lethargy, and confusion. Inability to remove potassium from the bloodstream may lead to abnormal heart rhythms and sudden death. Initially kidney failure may cause no symptoms.other symptoms of kidney disease include Nausea and vomiting. Passing only small amounts of urine. Swelling, particularly of the ankles, and puffiness around the eyes. Unpleasant taste in the mouth and urine-like odor to the breath. Persistent fatigue or shortness of breath. Loss of appetite.

My dear friend, most probably kidney stone pain occurs in back side and lower abdomen while acidity or gas pain occur in upper abdomen. In kidney stone problem, you will suffer from urine problems while in gas problem, you will suffer from constipation or problem related to stool. In case of kidney stone, urine discolouration is very common with burning micturation or urine incontinance. While in gas problem, extra blotting stomach, more flatus or constipation common. Hope this will help you. Both can be treated completely with herbal drugs without any side effects.

Urine Colour - What It Says About Your Health?

DNB (Nephrology), MD, MBBS
Nephrologist, Delhi
Urine Colour - What It Says About Your Health?

Changes in the colour of your urine can reveal important information about your health. If your urine takes on a hue beyond what's normal, it can be indicative of something wrong with your health. In general, the normal urine colour varies from pale yellow to deep yellowish-brown, which is a result of a chemical pigment in the urine called urochrome.

1. Red or Pink

  • When your kidneys, urethra, bladder or any other urinary tract organ gets infected or inflamed, blood cells get leaked into the urine, giving it a red hue. The causes behind the presence of blood can be urinary tract infections, kidney cysts, kidney stones, enlarged prostate and even cancer. Taking blood thinners can also cause you to have blood in your urine.
  • Certain foods like blackberries, rhubarb and beets can cause your urine to turn pink.
  • The use of certain medications like a particular class of antibiotic used in the treatment of tuberculosis can turn your urine red. Likewise, a drug used to numb discomfort in the urinary tract can cause a red/pink discoloration of your urine.

2. Blue or Green

  • The consumption of coloured food dyes containing green or blue pigments can cause you to pass urine of such hues.
  • Certain anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory medications can turn your urine green/blue.
  • A very rare medical condition called familial benign hypercalcemia (fbh), characterised by high levels of calcium in thE blood and low levels of the mineral in the urine can cause your urine to turn blue.
  • Green urine can also occur if your urinary tract gets infected by the pseudomonas bacteria.

3. Dark Brown

  • Having large amounts of these foods - aloe, rhubarb (a type of leafy green) and broad beans can cause you to pass dark brown urine.
  • Certain anti-malarial drugs, laxatives and muscle relaxants can darken the colour of your urine as well.
  • Dark brown urine can also be caused by disorders of the kidney or liver as well as infections of the urinary tract.
  • Injury of the muscle as a result of excessive training can result in dark brown urine.

4. Orange

  • Problems with the bile duct (the duct through which bile from the gall bladder and liver passes before entering the duodenum) or liver along with the passing of light coloured stools can result in orange urine.
  • A cause of orange urine may also be dehydration as fluids bring about an increase in the concentration of compounds present in the urine.

5. White

  • The presence of calcium or phosphate sediments in the urine can give it a white hue.
  • White urine can also be a result of funguria infection (a form of fungal urinary infection wherein the fungus produces white sediments) or a bacterial infection. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

I am 68 years old man and I have problem of some projected like balloon objects formed in the anus. What is the remedy for that?

F.mas,D.mas, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Chennai
Hi. Thanks for sending query in lybrate. I understand your concern. From your description the duration of the problem is not clear to me, neither you have mentioned anything about bleeding per rectum or weight loss, still I will give you most probable differentials: 1) prolapsed rectum 2) prolapsed hemorrhoids 3) a polyp or less likely a lower rectal growth kindly visit a surgeon/surgical gastroenterologist and get yourself evaluated clinically by doing per rectal examination, proctoscopy, colonoscopy and also a cect if the treating consultant feels the need for the above. If the diagnosis is haemorrhoids then open/stapler haemorrhoidectomy as per your treating consultant's advise. If it is a rectal prolapse which looks more probable repair through abdominal approach or perineal approach or laparoscopic repair as per your treating surgeon. The names of few methods are delorme's method, altemeire's method, lahaut's operation, anal encircling by steel wires or laparoscopic repair. If there is a polyp a biopsy has to be sent either colonoscopic or from ot. If biopsy shows malignant potential polypectomy with apr where the rectum, sigmoid and soome extent of descending colon will be resected and a permanent colostomy to be done. If colonoscopy shows multiple polyps then total proctocolectomy with ileoanal anastomosis to be done as polyps are premalignant. If unfortunately it turns out to be a carcinoma rectum apr has to be done. Hope the consultation was beneficial regards.
