Hello
I have indigestion problem I am eating anything that I want go in washroom. Please suggest some advice.
This is not indigestion. You start taking Salads in each meal. Deworm yourself with Tab. Albendazole 400 mg - chew daily one for 3 days. Take Econorm Sachet (1-0-1) for 5 days after food.

Abdominal Pain - Know the Causes Behind It!

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, FIPM, Fellowship in palliative medicine, certificate in interventional pain management

Abdominal Pain - Know the Causes Behind It!

There is hardly any individual across the world, who has not experienced abdominal pain. In most instances, these aches are not very serious and can be diagnosed and treated by addressing the underlying condition. It is very crucial to recognize the symptoms which are severe and know when an individual should seek medical assistance.

Most common causes of abdominal pain:

Some of the most common causes of abdominal pain include indigestion, infection, menstrual cramps. It may also be due to food poisoning and allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, gas formation and bloating, lactose intolerance, pelvic inflammatory disease or ulcers and hernia, gallstones and kidney stones, urinary tract infection, Crohn’s Disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Some patients have abdominal pain but the source of pain lies in the spine. These patients are often seen by multiple doctors and have undergone many tests but their diagnosis is never established. These patients should visit a pain specialist to reach a diagnosis and treatment plan. They have conditions like neuropathies or facet joint arthritis which cause abdominal pain due to a condition known as referred pain.

Symptoms of abdominal pain that are cause for concern:

  1. Abdominal pain along with any sign of dehydration or fever or is unable to pass stools.
  2. Abdominal pain associated with tenderness in the abdomen, painful and frequent urinations or persistent loose motions or bloody/ tarry stools.
  3. Severe or recurrent abdominal pain.

Determining the cause of abdominal pain and treating it.

  1. Detailed medical history and thorough physical examination would be performed. Further tests like USG, Endoscopy etc may be needed to reach a diagnosis.
  2. The treatment of abdominal pain is entirely dependent on the cause of the pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

5 Common Gastric Problems Experienced By Diabetics!!

5 Common Gastric Problems Experienced By Diabetics!!

Diabetes is a systemic disease that affects almost every part of your body. Of these, the digestive system is the most badly affected. While gastrointestinal disorders are commonly experienced by everyone, diabetics have a much higher risk of suffering from indigestion, food poisoning, gallstones and ulcers. Some of the most common gastrointestinal problems experienced by diabetics are:

  1. Gastroparesis: High blood sugar levels can damage the vagus nerve that controls the emptying of the stomach. As a result fo this damage, the muscles of the stomach and intestines do not work optimally leading to a condition known as Gastroparesis. This is a condition where the stomach is not able to empty itself properly and the digestion process is slowed down. Gastroparesis can cause bloating, nausea, pain in the abdomen, heart burn and a loss of appetite. It can also cause undigested food in the stomach to harden and form lumps that block food from moving into the intestines. This disease cannot be cured but can be managed with medication and a special diet.
  2. Ulcers: Stomach ulcers can be described as open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach, oesophagus and beginning of the small intestine. These ulcers form as a result of bacterial infections. Diabetes weakens a person’s immune system thus reducing their ability to fight these infections and increasing the risk of developing ulcers. Diabetes also increases the risk of bleeding from these ulcers and secondary infections that may arise from it.
  3. Yeast infections: Diabetics are extremely vulnerable to yeast infections. This is aggravated by fluctuation in blood sugar levels and can extend from the mouth to the oesophagus. Common symptoms of this type of yeast infection are pain in the throat and difficulty swallowing. It may also cause heartburn and intestinal bleeding if left untreated.
  4. Celiac sprue: This condition creates gluten allergies and causes the inflammation and thinning of the small intestine’s mucosa. In some cases, this condition may interfere with the absorption of food and lead to diarrhoea and weight loss.
  5. Diabetic diarrhoea: Patients who have been suffering from diabetes for a few years may experience an increased urge to pass stools frequently. This is usually related to gastric problems in the colon which cause fluids to move at a faster than normal speed through the small bowel and colon. It may also be caused due to the secretion of fluids in the colon and improper absorption of food. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

B/L hydronephrosis means obstruction lower down in ureteres which is more likely stone in ureters. You should get your CAT urography done to localise the stone and kidney fuction. These stones has to be removed urgently as back pressure damages the kidneys gradually.

Increased fat deposition in the abdomen is prone to cause gerd. Reflux disease. Give priority to weight loss and all nice things will follow the suit. Let it be a slow start but a definite one. Let there be small steps but deliberate one in positive direction. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables. Reduce sugar intake increase protein intake which will give you long term feeling of satiety. I promise you. If you start in a right direction, you will reach your goal even if the steps are small. Start walking daily. Increase the duration and distance gradually. Learn to say loud no to the junk food. You will do it. Good luck.

Whenever I go to the toilet to dump a stool, blood comes out in small amounts but no pain. Should I be worried?

Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS, FICS

Don't worry. It looks like your source of bleeding could be piles. You must avoid constipation at all costs. Take plenty of fruits, fibre rich diet and fluids. Avoid non-veg, spicy and fried food. If the problem continues, please consult some surgeon in person and have yourself examined. Thanks.
