As a dietary supplement, what is the maximum/desirable dosage of alpha lipoic acid per day?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that's in many foods, and it's made naturally in our bodies. There is a strong evidence that alpha-lipoic acid supplements help with type 2 diabetes. Several studies have found that they can improve insulin resistance. Studies also found that alpha-lipoic acid supplements can help with neuropathy -- nerve damage -- caused by diabetes or cancer treatment. They seem to reduce symptoms like pain, tingling, and prickling in the feet and legs. It may also help protect the retina from some of the damage that can occur in people with diabetes. There's some early evidence that long-term use of alpha-lipoic acid might help with the symptoms of dementia. Although these uses are promising, diabetes and cancer obviously need proper medical treatment. So don't treat yourself on your own with supplements. Given the lack of evidence about its safety, alpha-lipoic acid is not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Many foods contain alpha-lipoic acid in very low amounts. They include spinach, broccoli, yams, potatoes, yeast, tomatoes, brussels sprouts, carrots, beets, and rice bran. Red meat -- and particularly organ meat -- is also a source of alpha-lipoic acid. There are side-effects, risks and interactions associated with usage of alpha-lipoic acid. Because alpha-lipoic acid is an unproven treatment, there is no established dose.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Stress is in fact a cause and even a deterring factor in improvement of psoriasis with treatment. This is also a reason for your sleeping and anxiety problems. To be simple, unless your stress is treated psoriasis may not improve well enough or even may have a propensity to relapse. Hence it is advisable that you consult a psychiatrist and consider some treatment for the same. This would definitely help you in long term management of psoriasis.

You need to get scaling (cleaning) done so as to remove all the plaque and calculus, the gum bleeding, pus (if any) and bad breath would regress over a period of 10-15 days. Also do clean your tongue properly and use a good mouthwash as well. Please do not use mouthwash like listerine which contains alcohol as the base use a aqueous base mouthwash which does not desiccate the mouth.

I have liver pain is this caused for gas or acidity I think so? Which medicine should I use for this type of acidity?

It may gas distention trouble due to indigestion. Have simple bland food (Khichadi) for next few days avoiding junk, oily, spicy fried and deep-fried food items. Drink lot of water. Add Jeera, Ajwain, Sonth in your food items – these herbs prevent gas formation. Reduce intake of tea – coffee. Instead you can have green tea. Do not lye-down or sit immediately after having meals. Have a walk instead. Maintain good bowel habits. Have more of Coconut Water, Gulkand etc to relieve acidity, Avoid too much of Cauliflower, Peas, Brinjals, Namkeens as snacks etc. Do regular walking and mild exercises. You may also do a weekly fast – just to relax and calm down your system. Fasting also helps in cleansing of the system.
