I am 22 my brother 29 , he always insults me ,hurt me, think I am his enemy. Everyday we are fighting. I am tired for all of this. I wanna relief, trying suicide. But I am not enough strong to do it. My marriage is fixed in 2017. My father is dead. My mom , me n my brother stay in our house. When i'm sad , do not know why I am trying to committed suicide. I love my family but why my brother think that I am his enemy. Trying to rule over him. please help me.

Nobody should have the power to make you commit suicide. Your life is extremely precious and if your brother likes to bully, only you can allow him to bully you. In other words, you can be disturbed about it or just laugh it off. However, since your marriage is coming up soon why let him have any power over you. Be patient and get married peacefully and then you will be far away from your brother. He may be jealous of you for some reason or maybe he is missing his father and is expressing his anger towards you. Since the father is not there to control him, he may be losing control over himself for various reasons. Tell him about that and see what his reaction is. Talk to mom to intervene too. But do not take your life, it is precious to you.

The caffeine in chocolate, coffee, and tea are actually stimulants to which you can get addicted. If you stop taking caffeine abruptly, you may have symptoms for a day or more, especially if you consume two or more cups of coffee a day. Symptoms of withdrawal from caffeine include: headache, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, and difficulty concentrating. Caffeine does not cause anxiety but the withdrawal can.

Sir I have the problem of forgetting I mean I don't forget the things or work but I only forget when I prepare for exams and on reaching exam center I forget nearly 40-50 percent. how to cope of with this problem I have exams a head. please some one help.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You get into a panic mode I think with approaching exams. There is a lot of fear and very low confidence. To immediately calm down you can do something very effectively: block your lips tightly and breathe to puff up your cheeks with air so that the back pressure will press the vagus nerve at he back of the throat. This nerve connects the heart and the brain directly and will immediately calm you down in a few breaths. Here are some things you can also do to get back your concentration and memory: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.

Treating a long standing depression without medicines is like treating a fracture with getting a plaster done. However you may opt for congnitive behaviour therapy sessions under a trained therapist. The therapist may decide the number of sessions required according to the type and severity of depression that you have. You may also try lifestyle modifications like daily exercises, relaxation techniques like deep breathing, joining groups, communities, nurturing your hobbies etc. These help in alleviation of symptoms of depression too.

I am fully depressed Everything is falling apart for me I do not know how to stop it so I think I should end my life ...
At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Memory depends on understanding, retention and recollection. You should understand exactly what you are studying. Then retention takes place. Repetition helps retention more effectively. Once thd knowledge is retained perfectly, recollection is easy. Use "creative learning methods" to make study creative and effective. Take care.

Are there any mental screening tests to find out the extent of depression? I mean tests like brain imaging, MRI etc.

Are there any mental screening tests to find out the extent of depression? I mean tests like brain imaging, MRI etc.
Neuroimaging techniques like mri and ct scan are not very much specific for depression although they show some findings. Newer imaging techniques like fmri is much better for detecting psychiatric disorders but its very much expensive and currently used as a research tool and seldom as diagnostic tool.

How can I change my daily routine, which includes drinking alcohol with my dinner?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Most of our habits are conditioned to certain activities. If you change the activities, you could change the drinking also a little easier. So if you are in the habit of drinking before dinner or with dinner, then change your dinner timings, the company you have dinner with, the place you have dinner in (you can have it out), the kind of dinner you have etc. Once the conditioning is altered, the association is also affected. You will not have the same urge. Initially it may be difficult but with support from family and friends, it can be done. Once you do this for 21 continuous days, it becomes relatively easier. It takes 21 days of regular adherence to make or break a habit. You may also substitute your drink for soup, pepper water (rasam) buttermilk, juices, soda with lime etc. You need to be ingenious to work against the urge and the suggesting mind. More prescriptions can be found in my book on addictions. If you wish to have a copy, send Rs. 250/-.

Please rush to a psychiatrist without delay. Take your parents with you because the doctor will want to know your entire history from prenatal days. You have already delayed by two years, and must not postpone any further. Normally, serious breakdowns happen during late adolescence looking for a resolution, for the final time. Please follow the prescriptions recommended by the doctor and simultaneously seek some counseling. Life is very precious, and if this condition persists, your very survival may be in question. Please do not entertain any self-inflicting thoughts in your mind, ever. When you do have those ideas, please call a professional at once.

Ya. I can understand what you are going through. Non stop thoughts. But for that I need to know more about you. So that I can get to the root cause of your problem. But for time being I can only suggest that if those thoughts or the topic of the thoughts are so important. Then act on it, finish the work so that will not haunt you. Second, if they are not important then let them come and go away. Do not analize your thoughts. Hope this will help.

My father who is a medical doctor by profession, 51 year old, has done Master's in surgery from amu aligarh, has gone through several ups and downs in life, he worked as CMO in the medical college, later on MO in government hospital, have a family history regarding separation of my parent in 2003 (we are 3 brothers and one youngest sister), he continued to work and be in social life for the next 4-5 years, later on, slowly lacked interest in work and managing between people in workplace and even with friends, and finally left working in 2009 and from then, he is not able to work efficiently or manage a good relation with any one, he was somewhat suspicion in nature, now he became more suspicion. He did not contacted us sometimes for a year and later on we got him by searching somewhere, also, his brother's (my uncle and grandpa family) completely denied him and did not supported at any time and all the family issues were because of them as usually happens in any family. Now the condition is he don't go outside of home for long times, which is really not good for him, he suddenly gets suspicion over anyone, specially when it comes to job and work and most of the time in normal tone. He believe that there is chain of things going against him from his college to anywhere where he wants to work and not letting him do anything. When I say to go outside to even market, he is not interested, it's for the last several years, I did not find a good source to get any information on this, now please guide me to get him and our family a better life. This condition led to severe financial instability, we faced for last 5 years, and now I am working in a bpo to make things better. I searched on the net about this getting to the point the it might be schizophrenia? Something. I'll be really thankful to you.

I understand your feelings. But you must be patient. On your part, you have been experiencing pains of parental seperation and lack/ loss of financial support from your father at this tender age. It s really a high-stress time. Your father's abnormal behavioral symptoms are somewhat overlapping. I mean, many psychotic conditions like schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, progressive dementia-alzhiemers disease, dissociative disorder etc. Manifest through the same symptoms. Moreover, mood disorders like depression may aggravate the problem. Your father has to be properly evaluated/diagnosed by a psychiatrist and treated accordingly. Probably, the family members have to be equiped to manage to lead a better life by recieving family therapy by the concerned professioals since these kind of diseases are generally not curable but can only be better managed.

Dear lybrate-user, mood stabiliser tablets are given for many years. Stopping them will cause a reappearance of illness. If you have started again taking tablets use some family planning method like condom to avoid pregnancy, after getting out of this episode of depression, discuss with your psychiatrist about planned pregnancy. He or she will help you to stop medication for few months, say 12th week of pregnancy and restart comparatively safe mood stabiliser after the first ultrasound of the baby at 11th week. Sometime she may ask you to take folic acid tablets also for few months of pregnancy to see that you get a normal child.
