Epilepsy (Seizures) Emergencies - When to Seek Medical Help!!

Epilepsy is a form of chronic disorder and it is characterized by recurrent seizures. The episodes of epileptic seizures may differ from person to person. These seizures could be a result of genetic disorder or a result of trauma or stroke. During a seizure, a patient may also experience symptoms of neurological disorders and sometimes lose consciousness.

Medical help for epilepsy
Epilepsy itself cannot be cured using medication, but proper medicines help in eliminating recurrent seizures. These medicines stabilize the electrical activity within the brain preventing seizures.

How effective is the medication for epilepsy?
The success of controlling seizures using medicines depends on the type and severity of the epilepsy. Medicines for epilepsy are usually very effective and may fully keep seizures under control. However, controlling seizures caused due to brain problems may be more difficult. Usually, epilepsy medicines can control seizures for a long period of time when they are taken regularly.

When is medical help needed?
The decision about when to start medicines for epilepsy is a tricky one. This is because a first seizure cannot confirm whether a person has an on-going epilepsy problem. A second seizure may occur after many years or may not happen at all. Prediction of seizures is also quite difficult.

The severity of seizures also indicates when to start medicines for treatment. In case a first seizure is quite severe, medication should be started at once. Some people have very mild seizures even though they may be recurring in nature, and medication can be avoided in this situation.

All the pros and cons must be thought over before starting medications for the treatment of epilepsy. It is advisable to wait for a second seizure and then start medications for treatment. In most cases, medication is started after a second seizure occurs, twelve months within the first seizure. You should always consult a doctor to know when you need to start taking medicines to treat the condition.

For making the most out of the medicines to control seizures, you should follow certain steps:

  1. You must take medications exactly as your doctor has prescribed.
  2. Before switching to generic versions of your medicines or before taking other prescribed medicines, you must consult your doctor.
  3. You should never stop taking the medicines.
  4. In case you experience enhanced depression, mood swings and suicidal thoughts, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
  5. In case you have migraine, you should let your doctor know so that he can prescribe you anti-epileptic medicines, which also prevent migraines.

Medicines cannot treat the underlying cause of epilepsy, but these help in controlling seizures and this is the most common symptom of epilepsy. Medication should be started at a proper time and must be continued without stopping.

Homeopathic Treatment for Asthma

Asthma is a condition that severely affects the lungs. The airways become narrow and the lungs become inflamed. Its characteristic features include bronchospasm, reversible airflow obstruction and variable and recurring symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. This might be caused up to 2 to 3 times a day.

Causes:
Causes include:

  1. Daily use of Paracetamol
  2. Vaccines
  3. Daily use of antibiotics
  4. Caesarean sections
  5. Asthma in family

Asthma is usually triggered by:

  1. Tobacco Smoke
  2. Exercise
  3. Polluted or Poor air
  4. Cold Air
  5. Emotional Stress
  6. Allergies

Homeopathic Treatment: Asthma should be preferably treated using homeopathy. It is safe for most age groups. Asthma is a chronic problem that is best treated by a qualified homeopath. While few cures are found in numerous home use packs since they can treat a number of problems, the effective treatment of asthma usually needs potencies and changes of cures more than the extent of a prescriber and a home kit. For best results, the monitoring of a qualified homeopath should be sought. The homeopathic cures required for asthma change according to the signs of the sufferer. Some of them are listed below:

  1. Arsenicum Album (Ars.): Symptoms requiring the use of this medication include wheezing with dry cough and Asthma caused due to cold air. Upon application, the person will be anxious and restless and the condition worsens after midnight. Sometimes, it might result in exhaustion. There is a chilling sensation and they will crave for warmth. Patients required Ars. will be critical, anxious and afraid of being alone.
  2. Kali Bichromicum (Kali-bi.): Symptoms that require Kali-bi include asthma with stringy and sticky mucus. The patients feel chilly and after a while they get sick. The respiratory tract often is infected with mucous membrane infections. Ulcers are an additional infection.
  3. AntimoniumTartaricum (Ant-t.): Uncomfortable breathing and wet cough with mucus require this medication. It solves many issues that accompany difficult breathing. In severe cases, heart failure is possible.
  4. Grindelia (Grin.): Key symptoms are dry cough and possibility of wheezing. It may be accompanied by Rattling respiration, chronic bronchitis and suffocation during sleep.
  5. Phosphorus (Phos.): Upper respiratory tract infections cause asthma that ends in the chest. This causes coughing and wheezing.

Other homeopathic medicines for treating asthma are Nux Vomica (Nux-v.) and Pulsatilla Pratensis (Puls). If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I think it is a VSD or ASD and these re not very serious and an echo can confirm your doubts. A ventricular septal defect is a common heart defect most often present at birth, but can occur in adults after surgery or a heart attack. It involves a hole in the wall between the heart's lower chambers. Symptoms may include a bluish tint to the skin, lips and fingernails, along with poor feeding, poor weight gain and fast breathing. Most holes close on their own, though many may need surgery or a catheter-based procedure to close the hole. Symptoms can be treated with blood pressure medicines or diuretics. ASDs that aren't diagnosed until adulthood can damage the heart and lungs, shortening life. Many babies born with ASDs don't have symptoms. By the age of 30, adults may notice symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, fatigue, swelling in the legs, feet or abdomen and heart murmurs. Small ASDs may close on their own. Medium-to-large-sized ASDs may need closure by device or surgical correction.

Hi . I have a three month month old baby. I'm giving formula milk for my baby from the 1st month itself. Because From the beginning I don't have much milk secretion. Also I use to give Brest feeding 3 to 4 times a day in between. By last I had cold and light fever so I stopped Brest feeding my baby for 2 days thinking it will also affect my baby. After that my milk secretion has almost stopped. Even my baby is also not sucking from me. Now I'm recovered from the flu but still I didn't get back to my normal secretion. Not even 10 ml of milk is getting secreted. I have tried eating fenugreek garlic lots of water oats meal everything. But nothing has worked out. Ian really stressed because of this. I can't even able to breast feed my baby for 3 months? I am worried. Please help me and advice me. It will be great full for me and my baby. Please.

Milk secretion can not abruptly stop after 2 days abstaining though you had started formula feed 2 months ago and kept on breast feed 3 to 4 times in a day only which had been responsible for gradual decline of milk production. Now as the situation exists, keep him on breast to suck for some time before giving formula feed. I hope milk secretion shall start. 2 days absent can't make the breast dry. And if secretion starts, first give him your feed every time and then formula milk if you think baby is still hungry. Emptying of breast is best way to increase milk secretion.

Hello , weight is less, but birth weight and feeding practices are important to assess. Also it depends on the height gain and weight gain pattern whether the child is having an issue or not. You should ask your pediatrician to plot the height and weight and head size on growth chart and keep monitoring growth every two months. This way you can make an informed decision and management can be done. I hope it helped Dr. Uppal growth, childhood diabetes and hormone specialist.

segmented neutrophils are signs of vitamin b12 deficiency..take tablets becasules twice daily for that after meals Fever is not considered medically significant until body temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C). Fever serves as one of the body's natural defenses against bacteria and viruses which cannot live at a higher temperatures..Also, the body's defense mechanisms seem to work more efficiently at a higher temperature -Fevers of 104 F (40 C) or more may be dangerous and demand immediate treatment The following medications may be used at home for mild fever : -Acetaminophen (dolo-650 mg) twice or thrice can be used to lower a fever . Aspirin should not be used in children during a viral illness. -Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes and donot overdress. Overdressing can cause the temperature to rise further. -Tepid water (85 F [30 C]) baths may help bring down a fever -The body should be cooled with a wet sponge. -Fever can cause dehydration.Drink plenty of fluids.Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich ones like mausami,Amla juice etc. -Take light and easily digestible home cooked meals .avoid outside food -Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water especially before meals, or after returning from a public places or using public transport. -Further therapy depends on the cause of fever like urinary infection/typhoid or malaria/dengue infection and the accompanying symptoms that need to be investigated and treated accordingly

Symptoms and Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

I’m Dr. Prashant Shah, a psychiatrist from Ghatkopar, Mumbai. Today I am going to speak about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD. ADHD as the name suggests the full form is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is a common disorder seen in children and adolescence and at times may extend also into adult life. The common features of this problem are diminished attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. As I said earlier, it is most commonly seen in children and adolescents, the usual complaints will be from the parents and teachers. The parents and teachers will complain that these children have difficulty sustaining attention, they are hyperactive and they are impulsive in their day to day activities.

Sustaining attention means that these children cannot sustain or carry out any particular task to the end. They get bored very easily, they will lose interest, they may want to start many activities; they will say that they want to join this activity, they want to do this thing but then halfway down the line they will get bored, and they will stop doing that activity. They would have difficulty in focusing which will result in making careless mistakes in their works, in their calculations, in their day to day works, in their homework. They will be making careless mistakes because they cannot just focus on what they are doing. They get distracted very easily. The teachers will complain that in the school when the teacher is teaching they are looking out of the window or they are speaking with other children. They will drop down their pencil, eraser, and maybe make mischief with other children. Many times there are younger children; they are always on the go. They cannot sit in one place. They are not in their seat; they are roaming around in the class; they talk excessively; they will blurt out answers; they are forgetful; they will not mention about homework or assignment which has been given to them or the project work which has been given. They will inform their parents just at the last minute and then everything will have to be rushed. They will forget or they will misplace their books. Their clothes will be in disarray at home if you visit their room. Everything will be like it is not in its place. They cannot wait for their turn. Now all these are problems which the children-parents pick up.

What is the effect of this on the children? Because of this kind of behavior they are labeled as mischievous. They are the ones who get pointed out whenever something goes wrong in the class. They will be the first ones to be signaled out and given punishment. And at times maybe it is not their fault also but because they show this kind of behavior they are labeled as mischievous and it is they who get the punishment. Everyone ridicules them for this kind of behavior. Even the parents punish them. This will lead to many times frustration, decreased confidence which in turn affects their school performance. Many times this results in deviantju8 behavior. In adolescence if we go on to see this may result in risk-taking behavior, seeking novelties and at times in drug-addiction also.

Now, what can be done about this?
As I said earlier it is a neuro-developmental disorder, we do not know as psychiatry illnesses, we don’t know what the causes are of this illness or why does this illness occur. It may range from genetic to neurological to psychopharmic or neuro-developmental problems in the brain. But what is good is that treatment options are available. So what treatment options are there for ADHD? They are both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments available. Usually for children less than five years initially we advise non-pharmacological treatment. This non-pharmacological treatment is occupation therapy and sensory integration where depending upon the severity of the problem, children are called for occupation therapy sessions, parents maybe also given some home programme which they can carry out at home and this results in improvement. The improvement is slow but carried out religiously, diligently by the parents for a period of 1 year to two years this definitely is going to show improvement.

In other children or if the problems are severe enough, we do start medicines. In children parents are hesitant to start medicines and that too from a psychiatrist. But believe me there are good medicines available for ADHD, they do show response, there are no major side effects. The groups of medicines that are available are stimulants or non-stimulants. Stimulants are the first choice of drugs, usually we start with a low dose, so that the child can tolerate the dose, there is no side effect and then we gradually build up the dose so that the improvement is seen. Even if there is some side effect there is minor side effect which can be always taken care of. It is not that there is only one drug available, the child is not responding, we can definitely shift to some other. But the thing to understand is that treatment is required. This ADHD can be controlled and if the signs and symptoms of ADHD are controlled then the child’s performance is definitely going to improve. It will not only reflect in the child’s studies but also overall development of the child. So it is for the parents and teachers working in this field to find out these kinds of children who maybe having this problem and refer them for treatment.

Thank you. For any further enquiries you can always get me to me through Lybrate
