Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

DAA, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS, DMRD
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

Tonsillitis, in the easiest terms, is the swelling of tonsils in our throat that is accompanied by symptoms like throat pain, difficulty in swallowing/ drinking, altered voice and fever etc.

As in the case of most infections, the occurrence of tonsillitis is more common in children due to relatively lower immunity and habits that invite infections. Let's take a look at the first line of defence when you have a cranky child with swollen tonsils.

1. Make your child gargle with salty warm water: This treatment is most helpful in any infection in the mouth. Add half teaspoonful of salt to a glass of warm water and make the child gargle with the mixture as many times in the day as possible (to a maximum of 5 times). Continue till the condition prevails.

Make sure the child spits out the water and not drinks it.

2. Antibiotics: Consult the ent specialist and have the antibiotics if it is a bacterial cause as per the doctor. Take the alternative treatment prescribed in case of other causes. The entire course of medication should be completed even if the kid gets better sooner to eliminate all traces of bacteria.

3. Painkiller/numbing lozenges: Painkillers that are prescribed by the doctor can be given to ease the pain. Same is the case with lozenges but care should be taken that he/she should not have too many of these.

4. Allow him/her to take rest: It does help in a betterment of the condition!

5. Give warm (not hot) soothing food: Soup, ginger honey mixture, ginger tea can help soothe the inflamed tonsils in most cases. The condition, more often than not, gets better within 7-10 days.

According to me they are not much of a use... and should avoid... Mostly they are earning tactics... as it does not guarantee any immunity.

My ward (child) is 13 year old having weight 26 kg only. His growth (both weight & hight) is not not normal as per age. His diet is (one chapati in lunch & dinner) very less & feel uneasy if try to eat more. Please suggest what shold I do? I am very anxious for my ward health.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Your child is not very much under weight. Some children eat less and do not put on much weight. In fact obesity is a leading problem in childhood. If we make sure he has no underlying diseases nothing need to be worried. There' s appetite stimulant and he can be given nutritional supplement. More can be personally discussed. If interested you can come to personal chat online. Regards

Proper positioning for breastfeeding

Lactation Consultant, Childbirth Educator, MHA, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Proper positioning for breastfeeding
It is very important to position your baby well while breastfeeding. Not only would it ensure that the baby gets sufficient milk for the efforts he/she makes in suckling, it would ensure that you do not suffer from pain and sore/cracked nipples, and that your baby wouldn't get frustrated and refuse to breastfeed.

My child age is 5 month old. After 5 month baby which types of eating the food. Suggest me.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Rewa
Up to 6 months of age the baby should be given mother`s milk only, after completion of 6 months you can give home cooked soft semi solids like kheer, khichdi, rice with dal, etc.

7 years child having tonsil problem due that facing frequent ear pain as well as not growing according to age. Kindly suggest us.

MBBS, DTCD, MD, FISDA, Fellow Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleepmedicine

Tonsils help body, they are immune glands. Control diet and practise frequent betadine gargles after food. Because food particles stick to back of tonsils and cause frequent attacks.

Hair growth take it own time. Halke halke hair in 15 days is quite normal. If there is no disease either of scalp or no deficiency in diet, hair shall be good. You can not change hair according to your liking.

MBBS MD DCH, Dch
Pediatrician, Muzaffarpur
Make sure she is not having any systemic or chronic disease for her failure to thrive. You need to consult a pediatrician. Well as far as feeding is concerned please continue mothers milk along with home made mashed cereals acceptable to child. Have patience while feeding. Play with child while feeding. Hairfall is of no significance

My son is 50 days .had a problem of loose motions and vomiting since 2 or 3 days .i gave him med after consult a doctor of zinc gluconate , ofloxymin .after that the motions is better but vomiting is continuously heavy after breast feeding .consult me what can I do .or go for a pediatrician .

Pediatrician, Indore
After every feed burp the baby for about 20 minutes. When you r awake you can keep baby in side position or on tummy. At night you can burp by lying baby on urself in reclining position for 30 min. If baby is gaining weight then these vomiting are harmless, otherwise see a pediatrician.

My baby's genital area turned red and paediatrician said it was diaper rash. He prescribed Mintonia syrup 2.5 ml daily and Candiderma + cream to be applied after each urine. He is 7 months old. Is it safe to take these medicines?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
In addition to already you are giving, keep part clean and dry and open. Avoid commercial diaper. Use soft cotton cloth usually available in home.

Feeding uptil 1years is more than sufficient. After that baby gets nothing from feed but mother looses her calcium. Try to feed your child with proper food at night. Try to make her sleep with someone elze except you. In few days she will leave the night habit also.

My daughter is 5 months 22 days old. Need to start the diet for her thought of cerelac but there are so many variants available so I got confused. Please suggest which would be best for her and also suggest some good diet plan. Thank you.

DIP.PEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES, MRCPCH, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Pune
Timely thinking indeed! the very purpose of top semisolid feeds started at this age is to support growth demands n to empower enable child to take routine home/family food at one year age any staple cereal mix with pulses/grams/nuts in 3: 1 proportion with added energy dense ghee/oil, jaggery/sugar cooked n made incrementally semisolid is acceptable. Prefered are custom made home cereal mixes. Acceptable but less favoured options of commercial cereal mix only in compelling situations like working mothers, travel, hygiene issues. Hardly anything to choose between variety of available flavours. Just ensure age limits recommendations. Mashed fruits, roots, veg to be started bit later. Avoid top milk, animal proteins upto 9 mths. Start with 4 feeds a day n increase gradually the volume, variety, thickness as per taste n acceptance of baby. Happy feeding.
