dear sir, smoking is the biggest killer in cases of cancer and one of the commonest cause of cancers. cancer presents as a painless lump ,ulceration, bleeding, weightloss, difficulty in swallowing etc. depending on the area effected. one has to avoid any kind of known carcinogenic substances like smoking tobacco, alcohol, pollution , pesticides etc. eat healthy food and do regular exercise.

Diagnosed with oral leukoplakia History chronic tobacco chewing and smoking. Left addiction 3 months ago. My biopsy report hyperplastic squamous epithelium with no dysplasia and malignancy seen. Is it pre cancer Will it regress. Will it turn into cancer even if tobacco is stopped. Is this leukoplakia. There was also cheek biting. What is the treatment. Will the patch disappear.

Leukoplakia is any white patch in the mouth or pharynx/larynx, which does not have any other cause like candidiasis, lichen planus or cheek bite. If you have cheek bite, which is a linear line in the middle of the cheek, donot worry about it as it does not lead to increased risk of cancer. The Biopsy of cheek bite aswell as innocuous leukoplakia will show the same findings of hyperplastic epithelium. But the leukoplakia which is undergoing changes will show dysplasia. Leukoplakia is usually due to tobacco or supari has increased risk of cancer in about 1-10% of the cases. These are usually the verrucous, the thickened nodular or the speckled (with red dots), especially if on the floor of mouth or palate, for which we advise excision. Most of the other homogeneous leukoplakias either regress or remain static as surgery with or without laser leads to fibrosis, which will lead to decreased mouth opening opening. Irrespective of the Biopsy, for you it is better to keep a regular follow up with your head and neck or cancer surgeon because of the 16 times increased risk of cancer due to tobacco, which may occur without any leukoplakia or erythroplakia and please stay away from tobacco, supari and alcohol. Feel free to contact to contact me directly if you want to discuss this further.

Mr. lybrate-user. You have moderately enlarged prostate with residual urine volume about 54. Cc. Since when you are taking urimax-D it is a good drug. One thing you can try to reduce water intake after 6 pm your night frequency may reduce. please try this and contact me after 15 days, and also please don't go out in cold days avoid excess of alcohol if you are taking. Take bath with warm water and sit in warm water.

Hi, I appreciate you seeking guidance. Commonly blood tests/ tumor markers, scans and biopsies are usually employed to diagnose cancer, with biopsy being the gold standard that clinches the diagnosis. The test requirements, as mentioned above, vary from cancer to cancer. In fact, there always are symptoms but in certain early stage cancers they are quite mild and hence go unnoticed mostly. Routine health checkups may help catch these early, however. Specifically, basis the cancer society recommendations, you need to be watchful about seven cardinal warning signs (c. A. U. T. I. O. N) of cancer, as given below - c - change in bowel habits a - a sore that does not heal you - unusual bleeding or discharge t - thickening or enlargement of a lump I - indigestion or difficulty swallowing (/ dysphagia) o - obvious change in a wart or mole n - nagging cough or hoarseness hope this answers your question.

It may or may not be a sign of cancer. An ultrasound examination nd a check up by a general surgeon will clear the picture. If required a fine needle biopsy may be required.

I smoke about 4-5 cigarettes per day. How much probability of having lung cancer.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
It's difficult to calculate the probability, there are some risk calculators available but it's actually difficult to exactly predict as there may be other confounding factors like pollution, environmental factors, occupational hazards, genetic factors. Smoking is not only related to lung cancer but it may lead to head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal, bladder etc.
