Cervical Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

Cervical Cancer Prevention & Early Detection

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease and, if detected early, a cancer that can be successfully treated. Below are ways to prevent cervical cancer and detect the disease early.

Cervical Cancer Prevention

Avoid infection with HPV by practicing safer sex.
(Condoms can’t give complete protection against HPV because the virus can infect areas that aren’t covered by a condom.)
Don’t smoke, or, if you do smoke, quit.

Cervical Cancer Early Detection

All women should begin cervical cancer testing at age 21. Women aged 21 to 29 should receive a Pap test every 3 years. HPV testing should not be used for screening in this age group unless used as a follow-up for an abnormal Pap test.
Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test plus an HPV test every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, but it is also OK to have a Pap test alone every 3 years.
Women at high risk, exposed to DES before birth or with a weakened immune system may need to be screened more often.

Talk with your health care professional about the HPV vaccine.

The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cancer. It’s most effective if a person is vaccinated before becoming sexually active. The vaccine is recommended for girls who are age 11 to 12. Girls may also be vaccinated at age 9 or 10. Girls may get a “catch-up” vaccine up to age 18. Young women age 19 to 26 who have never been vaccinated may also get the vaccine.
Women over age 65 who have had regular cervical cancer testing with normal results should not be tested for cervical cancer. Women with a history of serious cervical pre-cancer should continue to be tested for at least 20 years after that diagnosis, even if testing continues past age 65.
Women who have had a hysterectomy should stop screening unless the surgery was done as a treatment for cervical cancer or pre-cancer. Women who have had a hysterectomy that left behind the cervix should continue to follow the guidelines above.

- do consult for further info on HPV vaccine

My father age is 75. He has third stage throat cancer. How long he may survive? he may tolerate radiotherapy?

MD - Radiation Oncology, MBBS, DNB (Radiotherapy)
Oncologist, Howrah
Throat cancer can occur in larynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx. You didn't mention the specific site. Primary treatment for these sites is chemoradiotherapy. However prognosis depends on site. Survival after treatment is good for oropharynx and laryngopharynx, worse for hypopharynx. At 75 yrs of age, probably only radiotherapy will be given. Of his general condition is good, then go with radiotherapy. This is the only chance of cure.

I have the habit of smoking but not frequently is there any symptoms for lung cancer.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
More heavily a person smokes more risk he has for lung cancer. Also how many years one has smoked also increases the risk, on the other hand many non smokers also get lung cancer, that means there is definite risk of cancer with smoking, but it is not only the factor that may lead to lung cancer, there are other factors also that may cause lung cancer. Coming to symptoms you have asked, first thing to know is that most of the lung cancer patients get symptoms when their cancer has already reached an advanced stage. In other words, most of the patients have no symptoms when the lung cancer has just begin. The symptoms that may suggest the disease suspicion are; cough of some short duration, blood coughed out, chest pain, some times fever and loss of weight. Few patients may feel breathing difficulties. And lung cancer has cure only in early stage and not in advanced stage, so its anyone's guess that how risky it is, if someone gets symptoms of lung cancer, which occur usually at advance stage.

My sister age 49 operated for ovarian cancer in may 2015 than six cycle of chemo ended in oct 2015 ca .ca125 in july was 120 .now it is 8600. Pet is ok.

Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Mohali
Rise in Ca-125 is a worrying factor. I am surprised the Pet-CT is normal. I think one of the 2 reports is wrong. Get the Pet-CT re-reported. Get Ca-125 repeated. If still same reports wait for a month and get Ca-125 repeated. If coming down or normal-then nothing to be done. If rising further chemotherapy with or without Pet-CT.

Who is the best doctor and hospital for treatment of breast cancer in Chandigarh ? Should one take the treatment in chd or go to Delhi ?

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology
Oncologist, Delhi
Dear, in spite of many modalities available treatment of breast cancer is controversial. Before hand take the advice of a senior doctor of the field for the best possible treatment. The younger present day doctors will advise you first the removal of the breast when it has been seen that removal of the breast is not necessary.

What is the difference between malignant tumor and benign tumor and a cyst forming in the jaw is harmful to what extent and can be identified as benign or malignant and what is the diagnosis in each case?

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Oncologist, Delhi
A benign tumor does not spread to distant organs and may be locally damaging alone. On the other had, a malignant tumor, may spread to different parts of the body and may become life threatening. A cyst in the jaw can definitely damage the jaw bone and hence needs to be addressed surgically. Te definite nature and diagnosis can be exactly commented only after the surgery but one may get a working diagnosis with an FNAC

MBBS, MD - Medicine, MD - Oncology

Dear, some people claim so but actually it is not proven. Better is to maintain good health, eat less fatty but enough fibrous foods, good exercise for preventing the formation of cancer.

I am a oral cancer patient now healthy no cancer traces are there can I donate a kidney.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, most of the agencies do not allow organ donation from patients suffering from cancer as there may be some risk of transferring the disease, however you must talk to your urologist prior to such commitments. With explained risk to recipient it can be tried, but I personally would not advocate it.
