I am 27 years old am suffering from cough regularly so what is the cause and treatment.

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Firstly there's no lifelong cure for the common cold. Antibiotics are only effective against infections of throat and are of no use against cold viruses. Over-the-counter (otc) cold preparations won't cure a common cold or make it go away any sooner, and most have side effects. A saltwater gargle 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2tsp turmeric dissolved in a glass of warm water can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. To help relieve nasal congestion, try saline (pure salt water) nasal drops. If you have a throat infection, or a viral cold then I will prescribe appropriate meds based on your detailed assessment. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

Pulmonologist, Faridabad
I am unable to understand what you mean by dampness in lungs. Tah 40 is for bp. Cough coming till throat and not able to bring it out, can be due unability to generate enough force to expel sputum/due increased viscosity. Take plenty of fluid. Do deep breathing. Try bro zedex cough syp 2 tsf/threetimes/day.

Somewhere written that dementia patient cannot take qutan 100 mg tablet because it increases heart disease like heart failure or breathing problem or happens sudden death. I want to known your opinion or suggestions about qutan. It should be given or not to dementia patient Please reply as soon as possible.

Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Somewhere written that dementia patient cannot take qutan 100 mg tablet because it increases heart disease like heart...
Dear lybrate-user, Definitely qutan is not the treatment for dementia. At times to control behavioural problems of dementia, it needs to be given. Qutan 100 mg will not kill a person with dementia. That means no sudden death. But persons with dementia die earlier if they use such drugs. Now you decide for yourself what is the next course of action. Discuss with other family members also. If you all can manage the behaviour of the patient, no need of qutan.

I have cough from last 2 weeks I tried lots of syrup but did not get cure please give me some good advise so I will get cure fast.

Homeopath, Raebareli
Thank you for writing to us. You are advised to follow the below recommendations for your condition: heat half a cup of water in a boiling pot. Add one teaspoon turmeric powder, and one teaspoon black pepper. You may also add cinnamon sticks. Boil this for about two to three minutes. Add one tablespoon of honey. Drink this daily until the condition improves. Alternatively, make an herbal tea by adding one teaspoon of turmeric powder and one teaspoon of carom seeds to a cup of water, and boil it until water reduces to one-half cup. Add some honey and drink this herbal solution two to three times a day. Another way to usen turmeric is to roast turmeric root and grind it into a smooth powder. Mix it with water and honey, and drink it twice a day. For further advise get back to me. Thanks.

Tonsillectomy - When Should You Go For It?

ENT Specialist, Delhi
Tonsillectomy - When Should You Go For It?

The tonsils are soft tissue masses which are located at the back of your throat, usually at the pharynx. The tonsils are masses which are part of the lymphatic system that helps fight infections. However, tonsils can themselves become inflamed and cause a lot of pain. Tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove the tonsils and relieve pain.

Why is tonsillectomy performed?
A few decades back, tonsillectomy was a routine surgery performed to relieve any pain within the tonsils. This method of treatment however has changed over the past few decades as pain medications for inflammation have improved vastly. However, tonsillitis is still performed in many cases wherein it tends to cause acute problems. Some of the cases it is applicable in are:

  1. Chronic bad breath problems caused by recurrent inflammation of the tonsils
  2. Recurrent sore throats caused by tonsillitis
  3. It is also done along with dental surgery for correcting teeth with imperfect positioning
  4. Abscess formation in the mouth
  5. Upper airway being obstructed due to inflammation, thus causing difficulty with sleeping, snoring, or causing sleep apnea (irregular breathing during sleep)
  6. Ear infections being regularly caused by inflammation of the tonsils

Other reasons why it may be recommended
Tonsillectomy may be also be recommended when there are no indications of problems but tonsillitis and other infections keep cropping up too regularly. This affects children and can make them sick or keep them in pain regularly. Some of these other indications are mentioned below:

  1. Tonsil infections and inflammations happening too frequently within a year
  2. Tonsillitis is caused by bacterial infection wherein the antibiotics aren’t effective
  3. Formation of pus in the form of an abscess within or around the tonsils which keep forming even after repeated drainage or administering antibiotics

Possible complications and risks
Like any other form of surgery, tonsillectomy has certain risks associated with it as well. However, these are very rare. Some of these risks and complications are mentioned as follows –

  1. Swelling of the mouth: The tongue and the soft palate or the roof of the mouth may swell, resulting in breathing difficulties an few hours after the surgery.
  2. Infection: As is the case with any surgery, infections may occur in rare cases, which may require further treatment.
  3. Adverse reactions to anesthetics: Many patients exhibit an adverse reaction to anesthetics and may develop symptoms such as a headache, nausea, muscle soreness and frequent vomiting.
  4. Bleeding during surgery or healing: Although it is rare, bleeding during and after surgery has been reported after all sorts of procedures and it may occur with tonsillectomy as well. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ENT specialist.
