Doctor I am not able to do control what is going in my mind. When I start to study my mind will remember many songs then I can't study anything. How can I over come this.

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Mangalore
To train your mind to think only one thing at a time, you require meditation. It's a little difficult so you can do chanting for one min to 10 mins gradually increasing the time. Or deep breathing exercises will help. Some people's brain can do two things at a time. Just check if your brain has tat capacity then you can put a soft music in the background and then study. If you feel it's difficult to study then concentrate on breathing exercises so you can train your brain.

She needs some counselling related to insight of her behaviour to be explained by expert such as psychiatrist or psychotherapist. After gain of insight that she is really doing wrong she can be motivated for some regular relaxation exercises and participation of healthy community such as yoga group can solve your problem but If this will not help then some medicines will certainly help you.

Dear user, continuation of psychiatric medications is necessary to avoid recurrence of depression. It is best to take ayurvedic or homeopathic medicines only after consulting your psychiatrists. Please do no not start any new medications or suddenly stop any medications on your own. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a good diet, regular sleep, exercise, and stress busting activities can reduce recurrence of illness too.

Kindly do not share intimate pics to anyone however close you feel they are, it can find its way to porn sites and social media. He must be a sexual pervert asking for naked pics and now suddenly stopped contact. Better you consult a psychiatrist and get counselling and if needed short course of medications to come out of this emotional state. All the best.

I am currently taking rexipra 15 (2 tablets) & mirtaz 15 (1 tablet) at night. Can I also take chamomile tea at bedtime or Will it cause undesirable interactions?

Dear lybrate-user, The interaction will not be fatal or dangerous. It is undesirable since you may need more dose to counteract the side-effect (alertness) of theophylline in tea. For the effect of lifting depression, you may need less dose of antidepressant. These are theoretical - practically please observe and report to your psychiatrist. She/he will adjust the dose.

The end of a relationship often feels like the end of the world. After all the time and energy you have invested in it, it is very painful when it gets over. Keep in mind that life is full of ups and downs; nothing is permanent. The pain you feel today will go away with time. Give yourself time to heal. Give time, time. In the meanwhile don't isolate yourself from your friends and family. Confide in someone you are comfortable with. Make a list of life goals, and plan how to achieve them. Relationships are an important part of your life, but they are not everything. Spend time with those close to you, indulge in some enjoyable activities. Keep yourself busy. Slowly you will see that there is a lot to life. However if you are feeling suicidal, consult a psychiatrist immediately. Don't wait to feel worse.

Mental Health - Why You Should Not Ignore It?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, CE (New York)
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Mental Health - Why You Should Not Ignore It?

For a fully functional and productive life, a person requires a healthy body and a healthy mind. Mental health issues could range from depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, autism and other causes. Hence, it is important that a person pays attention to these mental health disorders to avoid further problems in their lives, as well as the lives of the people around them.

Here are a few reasons as to why a person should not avoid or ignore their mental health problems:

  1. Better Physical Health: There is a solid association between the brain and the body. In case you are in physical pain, your work and family life might be influenced or you will be unable to do the activities you might like. This can prompt anxiety, nervousness and depression. People with physical health issues are three times more prone to look for mental health care than those without physical conditions as physical health problems can prompt mental distress and mental health issues can impair your physical health.
  2. Enhanced Productivity and Financial Stability: Stressful situations may trigger reactions that can make a person unproductive and lead to financial problems as well. Some people end up abandoning their homes, going bankrupt or homeless after trying to manage some sort of mental illness.
  3. Less Strain on the Family: Mental sickness or disorders influence families as well. The children of individuals with mental health issues are at more serious danger for misuse, disregard and an extensive variety of emotional and behavioral issues. Since they cannot look up to their parents for help and they frequently isolate themselves from their friends and most of them do not get the required social backing. Much of the time, the impact extends into adulthood, driving children to look for psychological or mental treatment of their own.
  4. Evasion of Crime and Victimization: A few studies recommend that individuals with untreated mental health, particularly in combination with other risk factors, might be at risk of carrying out criminal activities, violence or most probably becoming victims themselves. The danger increases gradually when the individual uses medications or alcohol or has acute symptoms. It could also happen if they are not aware of their mental state or have a poor adherence to medication. Usually, acts of violence happen against relatives or somebody in the individual's nearby group of friends or in close proximity to them.
  5. A Longer, Happier Life: Individuals with even a mild mental health issue may have a lower life expectancy and a short life span. Those with the largest amounts of depression or nervousness had the danger of death that increased an incredible ninety-four percent, mostly identified with heart diseases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Sleep problem is usually due to so many worries and unsolved problems related to family and employment and sometimes due to changes in chemicals in the brain. This problem needs counselling and behaviours therapy and sometimes short course of medication for 3-4 months and everything will be normal. Also meditation and exercise will help you a lot.

Depression in the Elderly - How to Detect it in Time!

MBB, DPM
Psychiatrist, Noida
Depression in the Elderly - How to Detect it in Time!

Depression is a serious yet common mental health problem that can affect all age groups ranging from young children to the elderly. It is found to be more common among women when compared to men. It can take a toll over one’s peace of mind, physical health, interpersonal relationships as well as job performance (or academic performance). What is deceiving is, the person can also be functioning well, in which case, it can go unnoticed, leading to grave consequences. The good news is that depression is treatable and individuals are able to function much better with treatment. Affected individuals feel sad most of the time. He/she loses the ability to enjoy/be happy.

As a result of this, the daily activities that he/she participates in do not seem to appeal to him/her anymore. This is especially true in the case of socialising. The affected person will just seem to drop out of social circles. This can be said to be ironic because it is times like these when the individual with depression is in need of friends the most!

The individual seems to have an overriding belief that the status quo will not be altered by anything and he or she will be stuck in a rut in perpetuity. In other words, depressed people experience a perennial feeling of helplessness. Negative thoughts can also drive one to commit suicide.

A lot of people who have depression tend to experience a loss of energy. As a matter of fact, this is quite the case with men who enter a phase of depression, as the symptoms which are displayed by them can contrast sharply to those displayed by women. One of the reasons for men tending to report a higher chance of this than women is the fact that they are less likely to express feelings of self loathing. Rather, they usually talk about sleep problems and a loss of interest in things that once they might have found to be interesting or even captivating. They also gradually get quite irritable.

When it comes to women, guilt is quite likely to be felt. They may also sleep a lot longer than what is considered to be normal. Eating habits are a better indication of the presence or absence of depression than most people would realise. Overeating is one of the prime signs, especially in the case of women who are depressed. This leads to them putting on weight, as the rise in the intake of food is compounded by a drop in the amount of healthy physical activity. On the other hand, many may also experience loss of appetite, which over a period of time can even lead to weight loss. Some women who are depressed also complain of aches and pains in the body.

A few individuals who are depressed also complain of weird experiences, like being able to hear voices calling out to them, abusing them in dirty language, asking them to hurt themselves (hallucinations). Some may be found to be extremely suspicious about people around them. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Hi lybrate-user, I believe your mother has undergone some surgery or medical procedure in past and mycophenolate is an immunosuppresant given for the same, she probably has adjustment disorder and might need an SSRI for the same. Since you are in mumbai, go to the psychiatrist who is senior and has experience in geriatric patients, I believe your mother will be all right, best of luck.

I want to stop smoking habit I smoke 3-4 cigarettes a day. I tried nicotex chewing gum but, it doesn't helped me more. I think my sexual life is hampering because of it. And, i also drink 60 to 80 ml alcohol a day. Please suggest me. How can I stop smoking and improve my sexual life? And is there any effect of drinking also.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Congratulations for deciding to quit smoking and alcohol. Nicotex is only a replacement for withdrawal symptoms of cigarettes, like headache, irritability, memory lapses, less concentration, increased appetite, etc. If you don't have any withdrawal symptoms, there is no need to use nicotex. Please continue to motivate yourself on giving up smoking at least for 12 -24 weeks. Then the craving will reduce. Even now, you can observe the craving going away like a passing cloud. Wait for it without smoking. Both alcohol and nicotine affect sex life. It is better to stop both and start enjoying sex life. There can be other causes for sexual dysfunction. You can consult a psychiatrist or sexologist for diagnosis and treatment. All the best.
