What Are The Causes And Symptoms Of Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological disease which is characterised by recurring epileptic seizures. These seizures can be brief or can persist for prolonged periods. Vigorous episodes which last long can result in physical injuries such as broken bones. Mention that 6th February is International epilepsy day.

Causes of Epilepsy
The cause of this condition isn’t very evident; however, most medical practitioners attribute epileptic seizures to brain injury, tumours, infections in the brain or birth defects. Some doctors believe that epilepsy is caused due to genetic mutations and is an outcome of abnormal activity of cells in the brain. Other causes for this condition can be alcohol or narcotics withdrawal and electrolyte problems.

  1. Repeated seizures
  2. Impaired memory
  3. Bouts of fainting
  4. Short spans of blackout
  5. Sudden bouts of blinking and chewing
  6. Panic
  7. Inappropriate repetitive movements

Types of Seizures
A seizure, also known as fit, is usually a brief episode characterised by uncontrollable jerking movement and loss of awareness due to abnormal neuronal activity in your brain. A collective occurrence of these seizures causes epilepsy.

There are three types of seizures an epileptic person usually encounters.

  1. Idiopathic: This kind of seizure has no apparent cause
  2. Cryptogenic: The doctors believe that there is a cause for the seizure but cannot detect it
  3. Symptomatic: These seizures occur due to a reason.

  1. Medication: Medication is the most common treatment in case of epilepsy. Drugs taken on a regular basis can stop the seizure partially. But in very severe cases, they seem to have no effect at all.
  2. Surgery: For symptomatic seizures which are caused due to abnormal brain function, surgery can be a way to get rid of seizures. In some minor cases, nerve stimulation in the brain and special diets can be prescribed to control the epileptic seizures.

Five facts about epilepsy you need to know:

  • Epilepsy is not psychosis or madness and can be treated easily
  • Popular celebraties with epilepsy include Aristotle, Alfred Nobel, Alexander the great, Sir Isaacs Newton, Martin Luther and Julius Caesar etc.
  • Woman with epilepsy can have a normal pregnancy
  • Newer medicines for epilepsy are effective and very safe
  • Surgery can cure epilepsy in some patients.

Gastroenteritis - How Homeopathy Can Treat It?

Gastroenteritis, also commonly referred to as infectious diarrhoea, is a gastric disorder. The gastrointestinal tract, which comprises of the small intestine and stomach gets inflamed. Gastroenteritis is indicated by the symptoms such as diarrhea, acute vomiting and pain in the abdomen. Fever, exhaustion and dehydration are also observed. This disease usually lasts not more than two weeks. It is also called the stomach flu. Infections caused by virus, bacteria, parasites or fungi may lead to gastroenteritis. Viruses account for this disease the most. This disease is transmitted mainly from food items and contaminated water. Important electrolytes like sodium and potassium are lost from our body.

The most common remedy in case of gastroenteritis is having ORS. However, homeopathy is also considered very effective if you have got infectious diarrhoea. Homeopathic medicines are considered very safe and result-yielding in case of gastroenteritis. Homeopathy is a form of medicine, which is always given preference by all experts, as it is natural with no side effects. After conducting various surveys, it has been proven that homeopathic treatment is far more effective than other forms of medication for gastroenteritis.

Here is a list of the best homeopathic remedies for the treatment of gastroenteritis. There are many categories of homeopathic medicines for diarrhoea each with their own significance.

-      Aconite
This must be used for diarrhea caused in the season when the days are hot, and the nights are comparatively cold. The symptoms appear in the middle of the night. Heavy diarrhoea along with high-intensity  fever occurs and anxiety.

This medicine is used in case of food poisoning. The affected person feels cold, tired and panicky. Vomiting and diarrhoea take place after midnight. Burning pain in the abdomen is also observed.

-      Cinchona
Used in case of diarrhoea with the presence of excessive exhaustion and abdomen gas. The abdomen gets bloated up.

There is no miracle. Medicine to stop loose motions with single dose of any medicine. I hope your doctor has given you more medicines and advice on diet and water intake. Zinconia is very good medicine which decreases total number of days of loose motions and helps to increase baby's appetite. Babies usually get better by 6-7 days. Give Zinconia Syrup for 14 days.

Sir my son is 12 years old and reported pain at testis. After doing usg scrotum it is found diffuse tiny ecogenic foci in both testis. Sir is it microlithiasis and any treatment available to fully cure from this disease?

Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery
Homeopath, Nashik
Yes it is microlithiasis. Its non progressive but may be associated with cancer. See this condition should be treated with homoeopathy. Homoeopathically speaking it signifies some kind of disturbance. If you will treat this problem with traditional medicine this will palliate.

How to stop using Budate100 inhaler, my daughter is using this inhaler from her 6 months of age, after hospitalization for pneumonia, she is using it 1puff twice a day, now she is 3 years 2 months old.

Winter season is not ideal one to stop any Asthma preventer medicines. Wait till March-April. Meet your Paediatrician that time and stop it after decreasing it over 15-20 days period.

Hello My son is 3.9 years and Is shivering continuously Fever is not there yet. What should I do?

MRCPCH (London), DNB Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Most common reason for shivering is infection. It can be trivial like common cold to serious type like developing pneumonia or urinary tract infection. So keep an eye on his body temperature which might develop sooner or later on. Make him eat something, low blood sugar can cause this. Stress can induce shivering. The reason could be related to school, friends, family etc. If his hands and feet are cold, cover him for some time and check the body temperature with a thermometer in his armpit for 3 minutes. If he develops fever or shivering doesn't disappear then visit a paediatrician.
