Blurred Vision and Cloudy Vision - It Could Be A Sign Of Cataract!

Blurred Vision and Cloudy Vision - It Could Be A Sign Of Cataract!

Cataract is clouding of clear natural lens present inside the eye, this is a major cause of decreased vision in elderly. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes, usually developing very slowly. Things look blurry, hazy, less colourful and less sharp with cataract.

Most cataracts are related to ageing, however many other factors can either increase the rate of formation or cause cataract formation.

Causes of Cataract Formation-

  1. Ageing: Most common cause. As the proteins present in the lens of the eye degenerates over the years ( just like any other organ) cataract is formed. If you are having Diabetes or hypertension, the rate of formation gets accelerated.

  2. Radiation: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, especially UV-B rays, results in cataract in your eyes. Wearing sunglasses in the daytime helps in slowing down the process of cataract.

  3. Genes: Many genetic disorders can result in congenital cataract ( cataracts present since birth) or early formation. Like in Lowe syndrome or Down's syndrome

  4. Lifestyle Choices: Cigarette smoking, long hours of sun exposure regularly, antioxidant, poor diet etc. are responsible for the onset of cataract.

How To Detect Cataract?

Certain signs and symptoms suggest the existence of cataract in the eye. Depending on the type and level of cataract, problems in vision occurs. The main symptom is foggy cloudy vision as if seeing through a dirty glass window.

Other Symptoms are-

  1. inability to see clearly in bright light (during the day) which becomes better in dim light ( evening and night) and vice versa.
  2. watery, tired eyes - mild pain in and around eyes.
  3. yellow tinge in vision
  4. Halos around light bulbs or bright light.

If you are experiencing above symptoms and having problems in viewing things clearly, visit an ophthalmologist and get your eyes checked.

5 Foods That Improve Your Eyesight!

It is true that the foods you eat cannot get back your eyesight. It is also true that the foods that you eat can never increase your vision powers. Then you might ask why go through all the trouble of writing articles which state the foods that are beneficial for vision.

A well-made point! But the real truth is while the foods cannot affect the performance of your vision; there are many foods that are needed to maintain a healthy vision. These foods are beneficial and are necessary to preserve the line of sight and are also valuable in sustaining them further damage. Let us give them a thought in detail

Vitamins A, C, and E form the main components when it comes to vision. Always choose a food that has ample doses of these substances and makes it a regular habit. Some of the foods that are high in them are:

  1. Bell Peppers: Not many people know that the brightly coloured bell peppers are a nutritional powerhouse that could help reduce the risk of poor vision. They have ample quantities of Vitamin A and C and in addition to that bell peppers are fat-free, low-calorie, and contain fiber. Give them a shot and see the benefits in the long run.
  2. Carrots: There cannot be an article written about eye sight without the mention of carrots. They have rich traces of Vitamin A and they help to reduce the impact of both cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Try having them in its raw format rather than a cooked format to get hold of all the vitamins.
  3. Greens (Spinach, Kale, Leafy Vegetables): There is an age-old saying that the colour green is good for the eyes. This holds true even in the case of green vegetables. Green vegetables like spinach and kale are rich sources of vitamin C and are loaded with antioxidants. They also protect your eyes from UV rays and the direct damage to your eyes from the sun’s rays. Use it as per your imagination and you can have them in salads, soups or as a dip.
  4. Blueberries: Blueberries are also packed with antioxidants and they are beneficial for the overall health and wellness of your eyes health and wellness. They are also high in the soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. You can simply wash them and pop those in your mouth or you can add it as a delicacy to your cereal and porridge.
  5. Sweet Potatoes: Just like carrots, sweet potatoes too have high carotene levels and they are effective in reducing the stress of your eyes. They also soothe your eyes to a great extent and can be beneficial in maintaining the robustness of your eyes. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

Retinal Detachment - 3 Common Types Of It!

MBBS, DNB (Ophthalmology), ROP
Ophthalmologist, Coimbatore
Retinal Detachment - 3 Common Types Of It!

Retinal detachment is an emergency eye condition in which the retina at the back of the eye gets separated from the surrounding tissue and pulls away from its normal position. The retina acts as a light-sensitive wallpaper in the eye, providing a lining for the inside of the eye wall and sending visual signals to the brain. As the retina can't work properly under these conditions, one can permanently lose vision if the detached retina is not repaired immediately.

During the retinal detachment, the retinal cells gets separated from the layer of blood vessels which provides oxygen and nourishment. Usually, it begins in form of small torn area of retina known as retinal tears or retinal breaks. This condition, if not treated, leads to retinal detachment and finally permanent vision loss.

Retinal detachment has tell-tale warning signs like an increase in sudden appearance of floaters resembling cobwebs floating in field of vision. It can be coupled with flashes of light or curtain from any direction causing a loss of vision.

Retinal detachment is of three types

1. The most common form is Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment where a tear allows fluid to get under retina and prevents nourishment to reach retina from retinal pigment epithelium by separating them.

2. In Tractional form, scar tissue on the retina's surface shrinks causing it to separate from the retinal pigment epithelium. This form is most prevalent with diabetes patients.

3. Lastly, in case of Exudative retinal detachment, the fluid leaks into the area under retina without a tear or breaks in the retina. Retinal diseases or trauma to the eye are main causes for Exudative retinal detachment.

Although a person of any age can suffer from retinal detachment, but it is more prevalent in people over the age of 40. People suffering from degenerative myopia or lattice degeneration are more prone to this medical condition. People with family history of retinal detachment are also likely to suffer from the same.

Retinal detachment can be treated in many ways. The most common form is the Laser surgery in which small tears and hole are joined back to the retina. Another method is Cryopexy in which the area around the hole in frozen and helps reattach the retina. Both the above procedure are performed at ophthalmologist's clinic.

Sometimes, one may have to opt for Scleral buckle in which a tiny synthetic band is attached to the outside of the eyeball which gently pushes the wall of the eye in toward the centre of the eye placing the eye wall very close to the detached retina. Another option is vitrectomy surgery to replace the vitreous that fills the centre of the eye and helps the eye maintain a round shape.

A retinal detachment is an emergency medical condition and must be treated immediately to save one's vision. Most people have been successfully treated for retinal detachment, but ophthalmologists cannot always predict how vision will turn out. The visual outcome will not be known for up to several months after surgery. However the results are best when the retinal detachment is treated as soon as possible. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

Annual Eye Exam - 3 Why It Is Important!

DOMS, MBBS

Annual Eye Exam - 3 Why It Is Important!

Before you go through this, just close your eyes for a few seconds and ponder how your life would be if you are unable to see? Pathetic isn’t it? Eyes are one of the greatest gifts from the almighty, and it is your sole responsibility to protect them and keep in optimal health so that you too can keep on enjoying the beauty of nature.

Sometimes people are too lazy to go for an eye checkup when there is absolutely no vision problem and in other cases, people just don’t feel it is important to go for an eye checkup once in a year. However, routine eye exams are crucial for every person regardless of the age, gender, origin or habits. It is not just for individuals with poor eyesight but for everyone with or without eye problems. Here are the top reasons why you must be paying a visit to an ophthalmologist.

  1. Getting the prescription updated: You may think that your eyes are fine and there is nothing reasonable in visiting an ophthalmologist. But it is a general human tendency to neglect things until it is so late that nothing can be recovered. And your eyesight and eye health is no child’s play- it is vital in directing the quality of your life. The skilled ophthalmologist can monitor the condition of your eyes and follow up the changes that have taken place over time. Your eyes and their features are unique, and thus it becomes easier for the expert to detect what’s been altered in them.
  2. Seeing to the best of your abilities: People with corrective lenses often experience the need for tracking the periodic changes that have already taken place. Your eyes alter their shape and condition with time. Thus, keeping your prescription updated offers a subtle yet crucial advantage that you may not have considered before. Some of them are even concerned with your safety such as your ability to see while you drive at night.
  3. Eye diseases can be secretive: Sometimes, vision issues can come in quickly but often eye disorders tend to creep up that most individuals are not able to see. The deterioration can be so subtle and slow that you are unable to detect anything until it has progressed to a great extent. Eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma typically have no symptoms, which can be detected at an early age.

And it goes without saying that vision loss cannot be reversed. But in case you visit your ophthalmologist regularly from an early age, vision loss can be prevented or at least slowed down.

Styes - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Styes - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Styes are normally caused by a proliferation of natural bacterial flora within the eye. This causes an inflammatory reaction and is known to affect children more than adults. It resembles a pimple in exterior appearance and may grow both inside and outside of the eyelid. The symptoms of styes include redness, pain, swelling and tenderness. Though the styes do not lead to any kind of visual problems, they can cause significant discomfort.

What can cause styes?
Your eyelids have lots of tiny oil glands, which can become clogged by dead skin, dirt, or oil buildup. When a gland is blocked, bacteria can grow inside. This is what causes a stye to develop.

What are the symptoms of styes?
The most common symptom of styes includes swelling of the eyelid, redness, pain, tenderness, eyelid crusts and burning in the eye. It frequently leads to a yellowish-white discharge which becomes very uncomfortable and may also continue to drain out of the eye. Doctors recommend not to press or squeeze the styes as it may lead to further complications.

You should call your doctor if:

  1. The child`s eye is swollen shut
  2. He has a severe pain
  3. He has a high-grade fever
  4. Swelling lasts for more than 20 days
  5. Pus continues to drain from the eye
  6. His eyelid bleeds
  7. He has problems with his vision

Homeopathic medicines for sty are safe and effective with no side effects. They play a vital role in improving the health and immune levels of the body. The recurrence of any symptoms in a body can be prevented by homeopathic medicines. These medicines are easy and comfortable for all age groups as they taste sweeter and give quicker results.

Styes tend to dry out on its own although applying homeopathic medication can aid in hastening the process of healing.

  1. Amalki: This homeopathic medicine aids in repairing damaged tissue which in turn aids the stye infection to dry out. It is recommended to add a teaspoon of Amalki, which is available in most homeopathic outlets, into a glass of pure water. Then the mixture must be left on its own for the whole night for at least 10 to 12 hours. The mixture should then be filtered and used for washing the affected eye.
  2. Heper Sulphur: Heper sulphur aids in speeding up the rupture of styes so that the pain is instantly relieved. This remedy is particularly suited for the styes that cause significantly red and swollen. It also aids in reducing the tenderness and swelling. In the case of some children, styes tend to secrete a liquid discharge and are extremely painful. Heper sulphur along with warm compress can be extremely helpful in relieving the pain.
  3. Pulsatilla: Some styes do not cause any pain but cause significant swelling and secrete a yellowish discharge. People affected with such type of styes can be significantly benefited by the use of homeopathic remedy called pulsatilla. It has also been found useful in preventing reoccurrence of styes.
  4. Staphisagria: Staphisagria is for chronic or recurrent styes that appear mainly on the upper eyelid. The eyes are very dry and have rheum. The corner of the eye and the edges of the eyelids may be chapped and infected.

It is important to keep the eye clean and flush it with cold water. If the pain and related symptoms do not go away after 3 to 4 days, it is best to consult a doctor for further treatments.

Glaucoma - What About It?

Glaucoma - What About It?

Glaucoma is a blinding disease, estimated to be present in about 8% of population, in which the Optic Nerve is damaged, usually due to high pressure inside the eye( but can also happen with normal Eye Pressure). This damage can lead to loss of vision which cannot be reversed after it has occurred. However, early treatment can control this disease and prevent or delay blindness.

In most people it is without any symptoms, esp. in Chronic type. So most patients are not diagnosed before extensive damage is done. Hence regular eye examination are important.

Symptoms can be: (a) Frequent change in reading glasses (b) Difficulty in dark adaptation. (c) Bumping into things at unfamiliar places.(d) Blurred or foggy vision. (e) Coloured halos (rainbow coloured rings) around lights. (f) Acute type may present with severe eye pain, vomiting, & vision loss.

Hence, Early diagnosis, proper treatment & proper monitoring are very essential to preserve vision till life span. All people over 45 yrs age & all first relatives of known glaucoma patients must get themselves checked for Eye Pressure and Glaucoma periodically.

Early & appropriate diagnosis is done by judicious use of

  1. Applanation Tonometry: Gold standard to measure Eye Pressure
  2. Pachymetry: For corneal thickness influencing eye pressure check
  3. Early morning: Eye Pressure check to know pressure variations in a day
  4. Stereoscopic: Optic nerve examination & photography
  5. Automated Perimetry: To detect visual field defects
  6. Gonioscopy: To diagnose type of glaucoma- open angle or angle closure- which have different lines of treatment

In present days, OCT(Ocular Coherence Tomography) is used to image the optic nerve but its use is supportive and still not considered a standard of care.

Medical treatment with eye drops & regular follow-ups to ensure pressure control, compliance, address adverse effects , detect progression if any , can help to maintain the vision for a long time

Those patients who are not regular in using drops or who do not follow up as advised or are not controlled by maximum tolerated medical treatment or have narrow angle type of glaucoma may be treated by Surgical/ LASER treatment as under,

  1. Trabeculectomy: Fluid bypass for open angle type
  2. Laser Peripheral Iridotomy: Fluid bypass for narrow angle type
  3. Laser Trabeculoplasty: A stop gap treatment in place of medicines
  4. Laser Cyclophotocoagulation: For blinded painful glaucoma eyes
  5. Glaucoma Valve: In glaucoma not responding to usual surgical treatment. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

Dear lybrate-user. Although a picture shared would have been better. You seem to have elaborated the history well. In viral fever this kind of fixed red and bloody spot may be visible in the eye possibly due to a hemorrhage (bleeding). If your son has cough also then it can be because of excessive coughing. However, in most of the cases this will heal by itself over next few days to about a week. In case you observe that its increasing do consult an eye specialist. If no change, then wait and watch. If excessive cough may have precipitated it than please treat cough after consulting your doctor. A trivial trauma may also cause that sometimes, ask your son about it. Take care.

Hello doctor. I had been suffering from blepharitis for few years. Doctor gave me some medicines. Now blepharitis is ...
You are suffering from squamous blepharitis in which white dandruff like material get deposited on lid margin ,in long run lids gets thickened & gradually eyelashes get lost  causing redness & intense itching in eyes ,it is directly related with dandruff in the scalpe. There in no cure for it ,but you may get relief if you follow as advised below.       Take a small amount of sodium bicarbonate  (mitta soda in Hindi) in a bowel (katora) fill it with  clean water (200 ml)& also add a piece of cotton ,boil it  ,let it be cool at bearable temperature ,clean lid margin with cotton in front of mirror, your eye lids will be cleaned because dandruff or white material is soluble in sodium bicarbonate, let allow lids to dry. When lids gets dried, you should apply optithrocin Eye ointment+ neosporin H Eye ointment 3- 4 times daily & rub it on lid margin clean index finger, you should clean daily at least for 3 months& apply ointment as told above. For dandruff in scalp you should use Nuforce Anti Dandruff lotion at least once or twice a week depending on severity.

Image result for causes of Glaucoma. It's often linked to a buildup of pressure inside your eye. Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life. The increased pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to your brain. If the damage continues, glaucoma can lead to permanent vision loss.
