The best way to get a flat stomach is to try high intensity cardio. This is because it burns a larger number of calories than low intensity cardio. Playing sports such as football, basketball, cricket, tennis and other sports is also helpful in promoting weight loss. You should perform cardio exercises each day for 60 minutes. Brisk walking is considered an effective cardio workout for those who suffer from joint problems, as it does not place much stress on the joints, compared to other cardio exercises such as running or cycling.

Benefits of Musculoskeletal MRI

MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, MD - Radiodiagnosis

Benefits of Musculoskeletal MRI

Gone are the days when bone ailments and damages were detected based on the experience and superficial conversations made by the physicians. These days with the advent of radio waves, medical science has made significant progress that has enabled a detailed overview of what exactly is going on inside your body and what should be the most relevant treatment in that regard. Magnetic Resonance Imaging or more commonly known as MRIs are a boon when it comes to diagnosing orthopedic and musculoskeletal complaints.

Common Uses of the Procedure:

MR imaging is usually the best choice for examining the:

  1. body’s major joints.
  2. spine for back pain
  3. soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) and bones of the extremities.

MR imaging is typically performed to diagnose or evaluate:

  • degenerative joint disorders such as arthritis.
  • tears of the menisci, ligaments and tendons (knee) or rotator cuff and labrum (shoulder and hip).
  • fractures (in selected patients).
  • spinal disk abnormalities (such as a herniated disk).
  • the integrity of the spinal cord after trauma.
  • sports-related injuries and work-related disorders caused by repeated strain, vibration or forceful impact.
  • infections (such as osteomyelitis).
  • tumors (primary tumors and metastases) involving soft tissues around the joints and extremities (such as muscles, bones and joints).
  • pain, swelling or bleeding in the tissues in and around the joints and extremities.
  • congenital malformations of the extremities in children and infants.
  • developmental abnormalities of the extremities in children and infants.
  • congenital and idiopathic (developing during adolescence) scoliosis prior to surgery.
  • tethered spinal cord (abnormal stretching in the spinal cord) in infants and children.

The Process:

In this process, X-rays and radio waves are subjected upon the affected region to examine the conditions of the bones, tissues, muscles and also detect the presence of tumours. This is majorly a non-invasive test and is painless. It does not use ionizing rays and therefore does not harm the body in any which way. The MRIs capture a detailed picture of the organs and the internal body structures and then transmit them onto a computer screen for the physician to monitor the inside story.

The Benefits:

  1. MRI is an imaging technique that does not require exposure to radiation.
  2. MR images of the soft-tissue structures of the body (particularly muscles, bones and joints) are often clearer and more detailed than with other imaging methods. This detail makes MRI an invaluable tool in early diagnosis and evaluation of many conditions, including tumors.
  3. MRI can distinguish abnormal tissues from normal tissues much more accurately than most other imaging tests (x-ray, CT, etc.).
  4. MRI enables the discovery of abnormalities that might be obscured by bone with other imaging methods.
  5. The contrast material used in MRI exams is less likely to produce an allergic reaction than the iodine-based contrast materials used for conventional x-rays and CT scanning.
  6. MR images allow the physician to clearly see even very small tears and injuries to tendons, ligaments and muscles and some fractures that cannot be seen on x-rays and CT.

Ovarian Cysts: Everything You Need To Know About It!

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, DGO

Ovarian Cysts: Everything You Need To Know About It!

Ovarian cysts are a common development in many women. Cysts are sacs filled with fluid which are formed in the female ovaries. Most cysts are harmless and do not even show any symptoms. However, some cysts do show outward symptoms like heavy bleeding, clotting, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain during the menstrual cycle, and pain during sex.

If you feel any of the above-mentioned discomforts, it will be in your best interest to book an appointment with your gynaecologist and get a check-up done. Most cysts are manageable unless they are very severe. In fact, it is best that cysts come to light at the right time and are efficiently managed, unless they develop into severe issues in the future.

Management of cysts

  1. Oftentimes, medical practitioners resort to what is called ‘watchful waiting’.
  2. At times, ovarian cysts disappear in a few months.
  3. It is recommended to take a blood test and an ultrasound to see the progress of the cyst.
  4. If you have already experienced menopause, then these tests are carried out every four months. This is because in such cases the risk of an ovarian cancer is at its highest and regular monitoring of the cyst is necessary.

Treatment of cysts
Ovarian cysts can be treated in their earlier stages. Here are some of the most popular treatments.

  1. Laparoscopy is one of the most popular treatments. It is a surgery carried out under general anaesthesia. The tummy is cut to a radius of a key hole and a laparoscope is inserted. This helps the doctor to see the internal organs, which is then used to remove the cyst. This method is less painful and has a quick recovery time.
  2. Laparotomy is the other method used for removing a cyst. In case the cyst is large, then one single large hole is made in the body to access the cyst. At times, the cyst and the ovaries are removed and sent for further laboratory inspection. This inspection is done to detect whether the samples are cancerous or not. This procedure is more complex than the previous one and might need the patient to stay in the hospital for a few days.
  3. In case you have a cancerous cyst, then your reproductive part itself would have to be removed rendering you barren for your life.

Ovarian cyst is very much treatable and is best to be detected at an earlier stage for better and faster treatment. Thus, it is best to go for regular check-ups and report in case of any disturbing symptoms. After menopause, the tests are carried out every 6 monthly.

Both are potent antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal.In general, onions and garlic are very health supportive foods. They have been found to help reduce cholesterol, risk of cancer, and support several other body systems that provide us with our vitality. Both foods may have the capacity to improve our diet's blood sugar-regulating ability. Both may also have special antibiotic-type properties. When it comes to our health, both onions and garlic are unique in terms of their sulfur-containing phytonutrients. You'll find unusual combinations of health supportive sulfur compounds in both of these World's Healthiest Foods. Intake of onion induces sulphur in the human body and it mixes up with the gastric juices which results into such mixtures that hamper digestion. Sulphur dioxide dissolves in the body fluid to produce Sulphuric acid. It reduces the pH of the blood lower than 7.4 thus, hindering proper blood circulation.

How To Prevent Cervical Cancer?

Karnatak University, India, J J M M C, DAVANAGERE, JJM Medical College, Davangre(Mysore University)

How To Prevent Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer (a malignant tumor of the cervix, the lowermost part of the uterus) is one of the most preventable types of cancer. Because of the Pap smear test, the number of cervical cancer cases has actually dropped over the past 20 years. However, many women still develop cervical cancer.

While some cases of cervical cancer cannot be prevented, there are many things a woman can do to reduce her risk of developing cervical cancer.

Reduce Your Risk of Cervical Cancer:

  1. Get a regular Pap smear. A Pap smear can be the greatest defense against cervical cancer. It can detect cervical changes early on, before they have a chance to turn into cancer.
  2. Limit the number of sexual partners you have. Studies have shown that women who have many sexual partners increase their risk for cervical cancer. You also increase your risk of developing HPV, which has been shown to lead to cervical cancer.
  3. Quit smoking or avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking cigarettes increases your risk of developing many cancers, including cervical cancer.
  4. If you are sexually active, use a condom. Having unprotected sex puts you at risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can increase your risk factor for developing cervical cancer.
  5. Follow up on abnormal Pap smears. If you have had an abnormal Pap smear, it is important to follow up with regular Pap smears or colposcopies, and whatever else your doctor has recommended for you. If you have been treated for cervical dysplasia, you still need to follow up with Pap smears or colposcopies.
  6. Get the HPV vaccine. If you are under 27, you may be eligible to receive the HPV vaccine, which prevents high risk strains of HPV in women. The vaccine is most effective when given to young women before they become sexually active.

Again, cervical cancer prevention should be a top priority for all women. Small lifestyle adjustments, combined with regular medical care, can go a long way in preventing cervical cancer. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
