Gallstones: Causes and The Reason To Opt For Surgery

How and why are gallstones formed?

The bile in your body contains enough chemicals to dissolve cholesterol excreted by your liver. In case your liver starts excreting more cholesterol than your bile has the capability to dissolve, the excess cholesterol crystallizes and forms stones. Bile may become concentrated if the gallbladder doesn't empty in the time leading to the formation of gallstones. A number of factors can increase the risks of formation of gallstones like:

  •  high cholesterol
  •  being obese/overweight
  •  being an American Indian or Mexican American
  •  being female
  •  falling in the age group of 60 or above
  •  a family history of gallstones
  •  rapid weight loss
  •  diabetes
  •  consumption of cholesterol-lowering medications

When should you consider undergoing surgery?

In some cases gallstones that are detected during ct scan or ultrasound (without any symptoms) don't require surgery. If you do not feel aggravating pain in your upper right abdomen or other signs and symptoms, then one can postpone the surgical process according to the need. In few instances, it has been seen that small and solitary gallstones can be dissolved with oral medication like ursodiol and chenodiol. However, you need to opt for surgery to remove the gallbladder necessarily in the following cases-

  •  sudden inflammation or infection in the gallbladder
  •  if you experience recurring instances of intense pain due to the gallstones
  •  certain growths known as polyps develop in your gallbladder which is larger than 1 cm in size and begin to give rise to numerous symptoms.
  •  if you have pancreatitis, which is a condition involving inflammation of pancreas due to gallstones
  •  if the wall of your gallbladder gets calcified
  •  your immune system is damaged
  •  you are experiencing symptoms and your gallbladder has ceased to function

Hi, generally fistula doesn't cause pain. It may be a fissure or a perianal abscess. Just consult your doctor again. Get a Trans anal Ultrasound done to get a proper diagnosis.

Hi Mr. Lybrate user Constipation indicates that the peristaltic movement of your intestine is not happening properly. In elderly people it is very common because of age. But in young people if it is there then it is ofcourse because of poor food habits. Try to avoid taking any maida product in your diet, any kind of bread (wheat/maida, Oily-as your metabolism is already slow n if you take fried /oily then all your digestive organs have to do extra effort to digest it. N in your case you should take poha/Daliya/rava idli-/dosa/uttapam/Upma or 1big fruit bowl in your diet in morning. Lunch sabji roti daal cucumber. Evening warm vegetable soup. Along with this take 2 triphlaghanvati with warm water before going to bed. Aloe Vera juice 30 ml with warm water empty stomach. Twice Do some exercises. If not feasible then 25 min walk after dinner.

Although having gas is common, it can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing at times. Gas is eliminated either by burping (belching) or passing it through the rectum (flatulence). Half to two liters is produced normally in adults and may pass up to 14 times a day on an average. But the condition can be really bad for some individuals -one study noted a person who expelled gas 140 times daily, with 70 passages in a period of just four hours. Although every one has gas, but why do some suffer from it more than others? The answer lies either in their biological conditions of their gastro-intestinal tract or in their eating habits. The Gas usually comes from two sources – (a) the air that is swallowed in with food while eating, (b) as a part of normal breakdown of certain undigested foods by harmless bacteria naturally present in the large intestine. Homeopathy can be a great help for those who suffer from this ?too much gas ?problem. Homeopathic medicines Carbo Veg, Lycopodium, China and Nux Vomica lead the homeopathic table in treating this problem. A constitutional homoeopathic treatment will cure you permanently You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance

What is meaning of pancreatic amylase and what happens if value is 146. What should I do. What is absolute counts basophil. What happens if it's 0.01.what should I do. Thanks.

B.A.M.S, MD (Ayu.) Kayachikitsa
Ayurveda,
Dear Thanks for raising your concern 1. Pancreatic amylase is a digestive enzyme secreted by pancreas into the small intestine where it begins the chemical process of digestion 2. Normal value in some labs are upto 140U/L whereas in some labs it is in between 23-85U/L [so please double check or consult a qualified doctor/physician near your locality] and high value usually signifies either damage/blockage in the pancreas 3. Basophils are part of white blood cells which take part in strengthening the immunity of the body and low count usually signify either hyperthyroidism, allergic reaction or bacterial infection and since value of basophil count vary from lab to lab kindly consult your doctor for best options.

Multiple times losses motion occurred, baby is 20 days old. What should I do? Baby has also rashes in neck and between leg joint ,what should I do?

MD- Homoeopathy
Homeopath,
Is the stools extremely watery?? If the baby is passing watery stools he or she should be well hydrated. As baby is just 20 days old breastfeed her as much as possible. Avoid using diapers and baby wipes for cleaning the above mentioned area. Use soft cloth and warm water instead. Dab the area as the skin is very sensitive in 20 days old baby. Use a good diaper rash cream or calendula cream.
